I read somewhere that Ficht likes to use fullbacks in his schemes. Seems to be the case, 4 years is a commitment.

The fascination with the spread offense not withstanding I have never heard a running back yet when asked about having a lead blocker/true FB lead the way say no I just don’t like it or need it. Everyone has said they like having that guy open the hole.

Yup. In addition to seeing more no huddle, the use of a FB is another improvement over Haley football.

I don't mean to pee in anyone's Cheerios, but this is a classic Steeler signing: It sure sounds much more significant than it actually is.

"We locked up a Pro Bowler for 4 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I remember watching a game and Collinsworth said, after a Nix carry, "That will probably match his total carries for the season" and he was pretty much dead on:

3 carries, 0 yards for the year.

"But it isn't his role to carry the ball," you say. True, but I prefer a FB who has at least a little chance of making a few plays every blue moon.

    2 rec, 3 yards total.

I know, I know, not his role.

So how did he make the Pro Bowl?

Well, that's easy: They kept the FB position included in the mix, even though FBs are nearly extinct.

Look, I am not unhappy they signed him, but the headline of "Steelers sign Pro Bowl back for 4 years" is disingenuous to say the least. That is such a typical Steeler signing: cheap. Get back to me when they sign a Dontari Poe, Sheldon Richardson, Todd Davis, Preston Brown, Jon Bostic, Kyle Fuller, Lamarcus Joyner, Kenny Vaccaro, Terrence Brooks, Austin Seferian-Jenkins, etc.

I wonder if this is another sign that they are serious about locking up Bell. Why commit to Nix if you aren't going to be running the ball at least as much as this season, if not more?

I think that all of those players would be worse than Nix at fullback. :smiley1:

    A great signing indeed.

Nix is not just a mere fullback who paves lanes. He is also a special teams demon who can generate pressure on opposing punters and lay some wood on kickoff returns.

Perhaps Fitchner is going to use a more traditional Erhardt-Perkins system as opposed to a variation of that and RPO plays.

Should that be the case, could this be a possible return to "Steelers Football"? I doubt that since JuJu, Martavis and Brown are simply too good of receiving options for just a smashmouth offense but more runs with both Bell and Nix would be a welcome change I would approve.

nix is a very good ST player as well. fichtners offense will run the ball even if it isn't bell. and nix will catch the ball out of the backfield too. good signing.

All those guys you listed aren't that good, I don't want the Steelers to overpay for those free agents.

I don't think Nix was in the playoff game vs the Jaguars on 4th and 1 when the Steelers tried to run wide, the new OC will correct that.

I was wondering the opposite, is using a FB is conducive to Bells patient running style? This might mean they are going to a more traditional power running game and draft a RB unless they think Conner is that guy.

I also thought that maybe it could mean they are just going to commit to using Conner on 3rd and short with Nix leading the way but then would they really throw a ton of money at Bell if he isnt going to be their 3 down back?

I have a feeling Bell is gone.

Blast, I was thinking the same thing seeing this signing. Guess we will see now that DeCastro and Tuitt have restructured. And their are several cuts that should be made.

Hopefully by playing smart by employing folks to gain a damn yard! A FB on a wide setup isn't exactly the smartest route, but I guess could be at the least confusing. I know it's been done but it isn't conventionally smart... Nor is 4th and 1 wide with a hesitant runner.

I highly doubt that Bell is gone. If they can't get the long-term deal done, they will franchise him again.

But possible. 14 million plus another missed camp and what if he holds out into part of the season? He wont sit the year like he bluffed but wouldnt put it past him too miss a couple games. There are reasons not to tag him. A 3rd rd pick is another one.

But if they don't tag Bell then they will probably use one of their top 3 picks on a RB in this draft, they would be better off drafting players on defense.

His agent had to get some money somewhere. He ain't getting it by signing Harrison anywhere.
