Is Tomlin simply the product of a great organization with an elite quarterback?

Excellent example! I've always thought that the coaching job that Joe Gibbs did winning three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks, none of them elite, was a remarkable accomplishment.

Eh. That was pre Dan Snyder days, much better organization under Cooke. First time around they had Theismann, Monk and the Hoggs, hardly void of talent. Second time was with Doug Williams which was a great coaching move I admit making him the starter, not taking anything away from Gibbs, he was awesome, just pointing out he had talent and his QBs didnt suck. Rypien was a good QB too.

If only Bill Cowher could have won Super Bowls with Neil O'Donnell, Kordell Stewart and Tommy Maddox. :lolol:

Oh, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings by asking what I believe to be a legitimate question about Mike Tomlin. I know some of you guys are really sensitive about any post that gives the appearance that it may be anti-Tomlin in some way. Sorry you see it as another "let's bash Tomlin" thread. So I take it that your answer to my original question is a resounding NO?!

What's your definition of 'success'. Harbaugh could have and should have won a super bowl with Kaepernick at the helm.

You didn't hurt my feelings at all, all these threads are redundant . It's not really a legitimate question either you don't see any HC winning without a good QB, all these threads just say the same old tired :poopy:.

True. I forgot that if you look at his full body of work, it isn't very good.

Belichick is in a different class then those guys you just mentioned. And to Bill's credit although not a large sample size he has a winning record without Brady. Look at those others you mentioned record without their starters.

Cowher had elite defenses and just no qb. He had a young Ben and won in 2 seasons...

The stats are misleading, the defense played about average the first half of the season. I know about the points per game but as I said earlier in the season, a lot of that was pure luck. We got handed a schedule in which we faced a lot of offenses that were in transition because of injury, coaching changes and were generally not good at all. The Browns games, Deshone Kizer's best two games this season, and his only 300 yard passing performance, came against the Steelers.

Chicago didn't have a good QB, in fact he was miserable to say the least and they had an injured RB who was probably playing at 75%, they literally had 1 offensive weapon and the Steelers could not stop it. Brent Hundley for GB, he who was averaging less than 200 yds per game passing and less than 1 TD per game threw for close to 300 and had 3 TDs, the same guy didn't throw a single TD at home all season. Shall I continue?

Mike Tomlin has benefitted from having a franchise QB, my biggest problem with him is keeping the players focused, it has been my number 1 beef with him. For the last 3 years every time I watch a sports broadcast leading up to a game with a sub .500 team it is always the same. If you haven't heard one of those broadcasts I'll gladly lay out how it sounds.

"Well the Steelers should win this one but we all know how they tend to play down to the level of competition and frequently lose games they shouldn't". I hear that almost every single time the Steelers play a bad team. I know it happens to other teams as well but not on such a regular basis that it becomes predictable, especially with a talented roster.

I'm willing to eat crow and give MT some credit if he can turn things around next season. If it ends up being more of the same then I really think he needs to go, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I do believe Tomlin is now feeling some pressure and that is a good thing, but there are two things that I need to see next season in order to get behind him again. The first thing is to see a prepared team every week, even if they lose at least make it seem like you had practice all week. The second thing is the discipline, it was a long season hearing all the drama on a nerver ending loop all season, from 1 week to the next it seemed as if the team was in perpetual turmoil. We can only hope he gets better but I'm not holding my breath, 11 seasons in and a coach is usually set in his ways.

Gibbs developed Theismann and Rypien and he got more out of Williams than anybody expected. It was a different era in terms of free agency, but Gibbs was a better coach than Tomlin.

That isn't a criticism of Tomlin. Gibbs is a Hall of Famer. I do think Tomlin deserves to be held accountable for the lack of discipline and preparation we see from the Steelers. That is the primary difference between them and the Patriots right now. But saying he's not as good as Belichik isn't a criticism of Tomlin, either. He's the best in the game, among the best of all time.

Tomlin also deserves some credit for his team's success over the years, which many here fail to give him. I think the Steelers are right to keep him, though they are dead wrong in keeping the defensive staff intact.

Of course. He's a passenger. He didn't deserve the job in the first place.

The reins need tightened more than a little bit, however to do that now when the players are tone deaf to tomlins rhetoric wont happen, I watched inside the NFL and it was mentioned the steelers was an undisciplined team this year but the question is can this head coach change it or not, I cant see how he can since he allowed it to happen....

If Harbaugh dont at least get to the playoffs this year the rats owner will fire him, his patience was already thin this past season, we of course can fail year in and year out and tomlin gets a pat on the back from rooney who evidently rewards failure from his coaching staff...

I'd rank some of the Schottenheimer "one and done" playoff teams that had records at or above 13-3 with Chargers, Chiefs, etc... higher than the Steelers of '17. That's awful to say, but it's true.

One thing that really got my attention was during the Jags game an announcer pointed out the fact, that Tomlin had frozen spit on his beard, that was real noticable and no one on the team player or Coach said anything to him about it. It was pretty gross looking and every time the camera panned to him there it was!!! I was like OMG can someone please let the man know he has spit in his beard!!! Maybe no one knew how to break it to him ummm "Coach you have spit in your beard" just thought you should know!!!

How about the meltdown the Cards had in the 2015 playoffs when they had a 13-3 record the 2 seed and beat the packers 26-20 in their division round game, then in the NFCC game lost to the panthers 49-15, there is similarities to how we blew our playoff games last year and this year..........
