Only to us though. Everything on that side of the ball is fixable... But will they do it?

I'll accept that Butler need more time.
But will some one explain to me why on-field incompetent, off-yield clown act, Joey Porter needs more time?

Butler gets more time but that doesn’t mean Lake and Porter does.

Or he is a control freak.....If Tomlin stepped in cause Butler needed help why is he keeping him and his whole staff next year?????

I have said this before this defenses problem is more to do with running this "hybird" system than it is with talent. Also having Mitchell play "centerfield" is killing this team. His feet are in cinder blocks and for some reason his mind works just as slow as his feet cause he can never pick up where the QB is going with the ball. If the Steelers fix just this 1 thing the D will improve leaps and bounds. jmo

I think he keeping him because of the very reason you mentioned. Maybe he’s a control freak. He knows Butler is a new coordinator and if he brings in someone that won’t tolerate “you in my business”.
Just like the cowboys keeping Garrett around. They don’t won’t a strong personality to bump heads with Jerry Jones. IMO.

Oh, and to your other point, I agree with you about the hybrid defense. It’s not working. They need to go back to the 2 gap system instead of the 1 gap penetrating defense. They need that traditional NT. But I think the reason they don’t is because you don’t have that NT or the pass rushing OLBs. Let’s be honest, Tuitt and Heyward was drafted to be that 2 gap DE. Yeah Heyward got 12 sacks this year but when you needed a sack no one looks at him as he will get to th quarterback. I would count on Harrison before Heyward.
We need an identity on defense.

Its not working? 5 defensive categories in the top 10 and its not working?

They need to clean up deep passes and maintaining their gaps. Two very accomplishable things.

And Harrison over Heyward??? I hope you just mean you prefer someone coming off the edge to try and get a sack.

This right here can be done imo with getting rid of Mitchell and getting a RS replacement....

Those categories are so subjective. You can view stats anyway you like to fit your reasoning. I go by the eye test. And that test showed me Kister twice, Huntley, Yates and bottom feeder quarterbacks look great when other defenses shut them down.

All season they have not maintained there gaps. All season we heard they need to maintain there gaps and communication breakdowns. And in week 16 and beyond the same
It was Harrison that got to the quarterback in the KC game. I know it’s only one game but if you had to send someone to get to qb when you ne d it the most, Heyward is probably your best option without Harrison but if I had Harrison I would send him.

Agreed. Id be shocked if Mitchell is back next season. He was always everyones favorite whipping boy but his play really dropped off this year.

Shazier was a tremendous loss, he gave Butler a ton of flexibility. I havent even begun looking at the draft but his speed will be tough to replace, dont know even know if anyone coming out fits his profile.

I agree with you we did play an easy schedule with a lot of rookie or back up QB's. We should have feasted on defensive stats, but we can't dismiss these numbers cause of that cause they are still NFL players. We had the same problems vs good QB's as we did "bad" QB's. Fixing S and an adequate replacement for RS will be a big part in fixing these problems.

Yeah well we are not just gonna replace RS but we will have to find a guy better than what we have now and then adjust. I think an upgrade at lb and Mitchell gone will combine to do that.

Blast I just watched the Shrine game that LB Yound from UCLA is a fast kid not sure what he will be like. Also another guy I was impressed with was Cabinda. I am just starting to get into draft stuff now but ILB and S are my top spots to start.

I dont start until the combine. I take note of guys that stand out and then go watch film on them. Thats my starting point. I dont watch much college, Notre Dame when I do. Id love to get guard Quenton Nelson, he destroys people but he'll be a first rd pick.

You are going to have a lot of work ahead of you because in my opinion this defense sucks.

Wow that is pretty late, I don't watch much college either until the bowl games. I do read a lot when it comes to who are the prospects to watch in each game. I am not a guy who puts a whole lot into the 1st round or even the 2nd I am a 3rd round and beyond kind of guy. I think you know that about me with the players I talk about Miller, Higby, Cutler, Mcguire, Hunt etc. I feel if you can find starters in rounds 3 and beyond you are doing great.

I start getting involved with the Shrine game, Sirius radio(MTC) covers the senior bowl every day and now that the Steelers are out I spend more time on the draft.

I can accept your reasoning with not dismissing the stats. But I would ask you this, What good quarterback did we stop? Or at least show we can match them? Dalton? Flacco? Alex Smith? Stafford? All of them played pretty well and if wasn't for our offense and Boswell we would of lost a few of those.

You're right about S and RS. If we can get those positions with adequate replacement we can be headed in the right direction. I would also throw in another OLB but that's a lot in one off-season.

Well we played Brady but only had 298yds, Stafford, Smith, Flacco and Red Rifle. But like I said we had a pretty easy schedule.

We had a pretty easy schedule? How many of those "easy games" we almost lost if it wasn't for Boswell. Our defense put Boswell in the pro bowl. Hmmmmm.

This was the easiest schedule we could have, we play teams with very good QB's when they were hurt. This schedule was easy no matter how hard we tried to lose games......
