    What do we think so far ... Lawson has 7.5 sacks?!!!!???

    I like TJ, but I'm not sure he is a 10 sack a year guy, which is fine, but neither is Dupree on the other side?

    I hear Lawson is bad against the run though?

    A 4-3 DE in a hybrid 4-3 system? Yeah I would expect that he would have more sacks than a rookie OLB in a 3-4. Especially if they are using him in situational pass rush where OT aren't used to playing him.

    He has 5 sacks in his first season with 5 games to play. He could easily be a 10 sack a year guy.

    Beyond that, not likely, the days of Steeler LB's putting up gaudy sack numbers are gone. They are asked to drop into coverage too much.

    I never wanted Lawson, wanted Watt all the way and wouldnt swap if we could.

    We are like a 4-3 lol but base 3-4. D line rushes and linebackers cover

    You don't just look at random stats, sometimes most important things don't spite up in stat book. Players need different skill sets to be effective in a system. Watt will only get better, plays with an edge, high motor, can cover, guy is an all around linebacker that fits this system. Pitt defense requires LBs to do everything, not just pass rush. I would like to see Lawson drop back in coverage and pass defend Jordy Nelson.

    ..... :hmm:

    Could have sworn I brought this up in another thread..... oh wait...

    "As much as I also yearn for the days the linebackers were the sack machines Wack, keep in mind this is a double edged sword; teams now can take away the outside pass rushing threat and have little to worry about along the interior.

    That 2008 defense was so good not because of James and Woodley but due to the lineman. Hampton, Kiesel and Smith all could occupy multiple blockers at once without much difficulty. Known as the "Okie" Front in addition to the man who is my personal favorite Steelers player of all time, that 2008 defense was legendary. Due to today's rules however, even stern sticklers like Romeo Crennel/Mike Vrabel are using different systems. Here is the current "Eagle" front we use..

    Notice the strong side now has two gap responsibilities and not the defensive lineman. This does not necessarily mean the linebackers cannot get more sacks. This means that the linebackers are becoming more than just pass rushers. Bud Dupree himself stated this in an interview with the Pittsburgh Post Gazette;

    We play more of a real 3-4 defense where our outside linebackers are really linebackers. The more you open up the playbook the more you see that. We’re back off the ball in a stack position or we’re outside dropping. In blitzes, we go in a lot. We’re always inside. It’s hard, but when you’re winning it makes everything a lot better.”

    Now, does this excuse Bud's still limited abilities like hand placement and bend? No. It does however, illustrate something that many of the fans have been clamoring for years now; more pressure from the interior.

    Guess which Quarterback despises interior pressure more than any other??"

    I would say it has more to do with how much faster quarterbacks are getting rid of the ball than how often they drop into coverage. In fact they probably drop into coverage more now because it's generally physically impossible to get to the qb in 2.6 seconds.

    I'd love to see Lawson drop into pass coverage as effectively as Watt does. It will never happen. I'll take the better overall player, thank you very much. Watt is that player.
