See, that’s where Ben is a pro. He can do this in one game.

This team sooner than later may be caught with their pants down around their knees with no reliable QB to step in when need be. If Ben should get hammered in the playoffs or retires as the mill has it, this team will be in total awe.

Lolandry has proven big boy pants just don't fit him. He's full of check downs, can't read the D along with happy feet. He's ok for a few flash plays then blows a fuse. Dobbs is so not ready to be a QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers so green he could be mistaken for a Jet.

It's time to get out the binoculars before this subject becomes an issue!!

Same for me on every account.

While the pre-Roethlisberger years were tough, they weren't as bad as people say. We had very good teams with mediocre QB's which left us with mediocre records. This organization was always trying and those years weren't as bad as most say.

    1982 - Bradshaw - 6 wins/10 losses - wild card

    1983 - 10/6....playoffs lost in div round
    1984 - 9/7......playoffs lost in conf round
    1985 - 7/9......no playoff
    1986 - 6/10....no playoff
    1987 - 8/7......no playoff
    1988 - 5/11....no playoff
    1989 - 9/7......playoffs lost in divisional
    1990 - 9/7......no playoff
    1991 - 7/9......no playoff
    1992 - 11/5....playoffs div round
    1993 - 9/7......wildcard loss
    1994 - 12/4....lost conference game
1995 - 11/5....lost the SUPERBOWL (that was hard)
    1996 - 10/6....lost div
    1997 - 11/5....lost conf
    1998 - 7/9......no playoffs
    1999 - 6/10....no playoff
    2000 - 9/7......no playoff
    2001 - 13/3....lost conf
    2002 - 10/5....lost div
    2003 - 6/10....no playoff

    Now Big Ben Roethlisberger!!!
2004 -15/1 lost to the cheatriots in the conference game where they had defensive signals.

7 seasons with a losing record out of 20 years and 10 years not in the playoffs. 4 times in the conference championship game and one Superbowl appearance.

Again, mediocre, but not as bad a picture as people paint. However, I'm in no hurry to swim in those waters again anytime soon. I, along with everyone else have been spoiled by much success and have higher expectations because of it.

I’m not sure I agree with this assessment. Jones’ issues seem more to be around speed of progressions and some midrange accuracy. I haven’t seen much of the other things you mentioned.

I’ve said this before: LJ is not great, but in comparison to the affordable talent at BU QB, he fits the bill for now.

Do I seem younger to you? I'm pure GenX... grew up on MTV when it played music videos, Atari and Nintendo, Star Wars, Run DMC and old school hip hop, Motley Crue and hair bands, Schwarzenneger movies and the Steelers with Louis Lipps at WR. Louis Lipps would be hall of fame with Bradshaw or Roethlisberger throwing to him!

I have no faith in Laundry Jones simply because he's a Big 12 QB.... call it conference profiling but I can't stand Big 12 QBs. I don't care how strong their arms are.

I'm willing to give Dobbs a chance, but I'm not optimistic. I'd rather have a backup plan

What would it take to get Jimmy Grapes from SF? Alex Smith? Not my choice, but he could be a better bridge than Dirty Landry until Dobbs or somebody we draft is ready.

Both Dobbs and Jones (especially Jones) balled out-of-control in college. Then get to the NFL and they got nothin' -Collapse of mental confidence

Then sign Kaepernick. Since when does the Rooney family answer to Jones and Kraft?

Pro Football Reference is a cool online "almanac"... handy tool.

Agree, the 80's Steelers weren't as bad as people say, but '85 - '88 seemed like an eternity... four seasons of no playoffs.

I enjoyed watching Brister, O'Donnell, Stewart and Maddox at QB. All of those QBs had their moments.

Except for the Superbowl, I was big on O'Donnell and screaming for him to take the helm long before he finally because I could not stand watching Brister anymore.

Stewart could have been great if Cower didn't try to make him a Brady type pocket passer and allowed him to use his feet. That dude was sadly about ten years ahead of his time. He could have brought us a SB if they planned an offense around his skills ala Mike Vick in the early years and all the successful mobile QB's since.

Maddox was a pleasant out of nowhere surprise. I couldn't believe when we started to air it out like that. I hadn't seen our team play like that ever.

But, Ben's glorious rookie season and subsequent 2nd year and winning the SB was magnificent. That playoff run was something I will never forget. I liked that SB against Seattle much more than a lot of people, but I have to admit that it was NOTHING compared to the Cardinals nailbiter.

IF Ben retires this year. Jones will be the QB then Dobbs the year after. Steelers don't waste picks. Dobbs will be the starting QB in 2 years or backing up Ben.

If the "next one" cannot be drafted in 2018 and Ben retires, it will have to be Landry Jones' time. What can and will assist him will have to be Le'Veon Bell (assuming he is back) and the defense.

I doubt Pittsburgh signs another QB in next year's free agency barring extreme circumstances. Pittsburgh generally elects to stay with what they have.

Again, this is under the assumption that Ben does not come back.

I think they learned from the 90s and actually trying to groom and have a QB ready. They used a 4th while they got Landry Jones. Landry Jones isn't horrible he could probably win this division this year but it would be a lot closer. I think they have plans for Dobbs so I don't see the point in bashing him. He showed flashes in those preseason games. I can see them bringing in a guy with experience like a Case Keenum type for competition. Either he beats out Dobbs or more experience for him. No way they are going to throw a 100 million to Kirk Cousins or any of this other crazy crap people are talking about. Long term I think Dobbs is the future.

The Vikings are going to have to choose among Bridgewater, Bradford, and Keenum. I would take either Bridgewater or Keenum any day if Ben retired.

Cousins is easily a top 10 starter. He would be the top pick although I have a hard time seeing the Steelers make that kind of free agent splash.

I would feel better about Jones if he could protect the ball. He knows the offense and he has flashed some ability, but the guy is just too prone to the INT.

Let's see what Dobbs can do with the starters. Pre-season.. he was throwing mostly to the bench guys.

Jones is a life time backup QB and not very good at that, Dobbs well, good kid but he wasn't even good in College.

I believe Landry Jones can be a Neil O'Donnell like quarterback. He'll never be a franchise QB, but I think he does have enough ability and smarts and is what I call a good distributor of the football. With a strong defense and a good running game, he can be successful. I'm not sold on Dobbs but I'm certainly willing to give him an opportunity to grow into the role. I just don't think he's accurate enough to have sustained success in the NFL. I think that's where Jones has the advantage.

Agree with the Jones part but how can you say that about Dobbs? I am not a college football follower I watch a little but not enough to say so. However his last season he went 9-4 with 2 loses to a 8th ranked team and a #1 ranked team. 63%, 2900+ yards, 27-12 td/int and 150 rating, not a bad stat line and played 5 ranked teams going 3-2. By no means am I saying he is starter material but I am also not ready to say he isn't. I feel he has a crap ton more upside at this point than Jones did at the same time of his career, no?
