Safety concerns?

I went and watched the Browns game again and looked at the secondary to see what kind of coverages the team was running. I also wanted to see why Haden was getting burned and after watching it I was a little concerned but I wanted to come here and see how all you felt. I'm probably wrong and that is why I wanted the board's view, it looked like there was either, A.) miscommunication between CB and Safety, or B.) Sean Davis doesn't know what his job is, or C.) Haden having issues covering. Perhaps it could be a combination of all three or something I don't know about but too me it appeared that Davis is consistently out of position on pass plays. I saw 3 plays where the CB was passed off to the safety to cover the underneath guy only that Davis was either on the other side of the field or in one case he looked like he tried to take the underneath receiver. It was kind of confusing to see some of the areas he was at and it made me wonder because if he is at the wrong spots all the time I'd imagine they would work on it in practice or bench him. I also thought that they maybe are trying to bait a QB into making a mistake by disguising the coverage but I really don't know, I've been thinking either Davis is bad or perhaps the scheme isn't a good design but it just doesn't look right to me, thoughts??

 

I watched the game again and I believe that I over reacted when I posted the Haden's Steeler's debut thread stating that he wasn't very impressive. He wasn't overly impressive either but he wasn't as bad as I thought so onto your question I think it is miscommunication between CB and Safety.

 

why davis and not mitchell being the one out of place or late in coverage? mitchell is the FS. it's going to take a while for these DB's to function through communication since everyone is fairly new in playing together. i think they are asking davis to do an awful lot in this defense. we have to find some safeties next year. wilcox could have helped but is now hurt which puts us back another week. i was worried about range of our safeties and still am.

 

D backs are like O-line. They need to play together to play most effectively. Two cogs in the backfield, Haden and JJ (who played almost 1/3 of the snaps before wrecking himself) have been on the team 1 week. As the season progresses, they'll start to gel. (praying I'm right).

 

Miscommunication and lack of continuity. Simple as that.


No need to over analyze something here. If anything, much like the majority of the offense, the secondary was quite rusty in itself.



They should be fine moving forward.

 

We need talent at this position BADLY.

 

For as athletic as Davis is... we should start seeing him making some plays out on the field...

Haden look slike he has good Football smarts, but does look kinda slow.

 

I don't get the Haden hate. I was watching him on every snap. I haven't rewatched the whole game but he gave up what? 2 catches? I remember he had a sack(where he blew over the blocker), perfect trail technique, and a couple times I saw him directing players when we had WR's uncovered like we normally do. Wilcox didn't look horrible either. Now Davis looked lost out there. I haven't seen him make a play since last year.

 

Never heard anything other then Wilcox was in concussion protocol. Is out for this Sunday?

 

Hasn't yet cleared protocol. Didn't practice today.

Gonna evaluate Haden 4 games in, we will see where we stand

 

davis added to injury list. (ankle). we are down to 2 safeties now if he can't go. hagan may get a call up but still........... we are in trouble. gay maybe? i sure wish they would work allen back there. fort gone doesn't help coverage either if something happens. looks like we will be playing dime with 4 corners a lot.

 

If Davis cannot go then that is some serious trouble we are in.


Pass rush has to get home early and often. Should Dupree come back, all the better.

I agree that he did look lost in his first game but I would not call him that just yet.



He certainly has not reached Jarvis Jones levels yet.

 

he's far from shamarko. i still think mitchell missing nearly all of camp has hurt these young guys. time will tell on davis but i like the kid. i still don't think he is a SS though.

Jarvis Jones was a bust at this point in his career, fans spent another 2 seasons refusing to accept it.

I do think he is raw as sushi when it comes to playing safety; quite perplexing given the fact he did play safety at Maryland.


What did you see to conclude this? No condescensing tone either. Just curious.

 

So hard to believe he's dead. I just basically refuse to accept it.
