Ben is the offensive coordinator at the line of scrimmage. He takes a minimum of 3 plays to the line, and he makes the call based on the coverage/front/look. If you hate bubble screens, hate Ben for it.

I think Haley/Ben make a great playcalling tandem.

Judging by what I saw against the Clowns I dont think Ben is going to trust his abilities anytime soon. Ben has his favourites and we saw it was JJ last Sunday. JJ has picked up his game likely after the Macdonald signing. Ben sees this and will trust his big TE to scored redzone TDs

I agree with LoneGranger and AskQuestionsLater and I might add that we ran DLB out of town partly because we thought he couldn't adjust to the changing NFL, only to see him switch away from zone defense to more man-to-man and the guy we kept Kevin Butler stayed with a stale zone defense and got KILLED against New England.

Does the EXPERIENCED QB look at the defense, see it is stacked against the called, run the play anyway? A smart QB checks out of the play and calls another one. Dumb QB play!

I think somewhat of a half-truth. I think it's safe to say that Todd more than influences what gets called. I point to exhibit "A": Haley's history as head coach in KC. He CLEARLY was calling plays there and what did he favor? An overkill of short crap, bubble screens, end arounds, etc., the very stuff we see when we are seeing before they let Ben go semi-no huddle where Ben has more say. Watch the Browns' game again, I did. The majority of the game was flat out painful, as the Steelers did not attack the D as much as they just wasted time, misusing the talent we had on the field. We do you make a 6-4, 4.3 forty burner for bubble screens? That is madness. The Browns had EVERYONE up close to the LOS except for ONE guy (Peppers who was like 25 yards back). If you go deep or semi-deep with both wides, Peppers can't cover both. But yet, we ran bubble screens all day and none of them worked for crap.

    Go watch the game again.

The first, on the first play of the game, was a swing/bubble to Eli (7 yards, juju hold). We are in 5 wide. The Browns are in 2 man deep. Eli in the slot is being zoned. Jesse is man pressed, and JuJu is wide being covered in off man. The Steelers have the numbers (3 vs 2). Perfect alignment to run the bubble against.

The 2nd bubble, to Bryant (2 yds). Was against single high, and I agree, in this scenario I'd much rather see them attack deep. Ben does not change the play. AB and Bryant are being covered in off man. Should at a minimum be an easy pitch n catch on a short dig or out route. Or they could be aggressive and run verticals. But it's early in the game (3rd offensive snap).... and they were using the bubble as a set up (see below). The fact that Ben DOESN'T change this play, against single high... is a good indication that it was a gameplan element (see below)

3rd bubble, to Bryant (dropped), on the very next snap. Browns are back in their cover 2 shell, like the first bubble they are showing zone and off man on the bubble side. The Steelers have the numbers and the edge again. While the call is different then the Rogers bubble, it is still essentially the same alignment and thus the right call.

4th bubble, to Bryant (no gain). Bryant blows this play dancing. Williams is showin overload on the strong side. With overload, you don't know who may be dropping to the zone, if you run the slant in to that zone, you're getting picked. With the off man coverage giving Bryant 10 yards, and 2 blockers (eli/jesse), it's a safe call on 2nd and 4. If Bryant would've just caught the ball and made his move forward he probably picks up the first, jesse is in perfect position to pick up his corner. Bad play by Bryant, safe/smart call by Ben.

All 4 of those bubbles set up a beautiful play call on 1st and goal from the 9 right before the half... the play didn't work, because Jesse James ran a ****ty route. They fake the bubble, the off/zone nickel corner bites, and Jesse should be golden to run the seam, but for whatever reason breaks his route off in to coverage.... Ben has to try to go elsewhere, ending up in a broken play.... but it does highlight the chessmatch of football, and why every playcall isn't simply about that down, but about the impact on the rest of the game. We scored 2 plays later.

The Steelers ran no wr bubble screens in the 2nd half

The only complaint I have about the calls, is how terrible Martavis Bryant executed them

    Nice breakdown.

Bryant clearly looked like someone who hadn't played a game in over a year.

How long do you think it takes him to get back to where he was?

I believe Ben had said in an interview this week that the first drive was essentially scripted.

    Penalties killed it.

The main complaints I have on the screens is I would like to see the best blockers out there and I would also like to see the Wheel route ran off of it some . Even if the Wheel doesn't work it helps set up the block better and creates more space .

Anyone know just who that media account was?

I saw an interview where Ben said the first drive was a script but I didn't detect any animosity towards it.

From what I've read the first 15-20 plays of every game are scripted.

You would have to think Ben is atleast somewhat involved. I doubt an OC is scripting plays and demanding his future HOF, 14 year veteran QB follow the lead.

    I don't buy it.

It's certainly dumb on someone's part but there's no doubt that calls were made in this game and others that seem a bit senseless. I can get having a game-plan but we need to adjust a lot more quickly than we do.
Look at the rest of my post where I said that I don't hate Haley or think he's the worst.

He's not the worst - but he's not the best either and both he and Tomlin have some room for improvement.
My stating that doesn't mean that I don't respect and appreciate what they bring to the team. I'm just saying that they can and must improve just like everyone else needs to at times.

Penalties were the biggest problem in the Browns game. Just saying.....

There's an offensive coordinator in Seattle who would like a word with you.

    Yes no and sort of.

Based on a bunch of snippets Ben has tossed out:

When in hurry up, he definitely is calling the plays. During normal series, Haley sends in the play and formation. Ben can call an audible, but he's pretty well stuck with the formation. He can't very well switch a pass play into a power run, but he can change deep to short, etc.

At least that's the jist I was getting from him. When asked about play calling, his common answer is to ask the coach.
