Good test to see if Joe is still top of his game too. I'd really test him, flip Bud and Watt, put Chick in to speed off the edge, let Deebo bend him .

It works against statue QB'S with weaker arms .If the young QB has a strong arm and this kid does , he can zip some quick ones in there . He also has speed and mobility. This means someone has to spy him meaning one less defender in the zone . I watched him play against zone in the pre season he likes it when Teams run zone .

If we run mainly zone this kid will have a big day . Man up and let him scan the field to see who can get open . He has already been Coached on zone busters he knows what route is more than likely to be open against a certain zone and if that 1 isn't there look at this route or hit the check down or tuck it and take off . This is what he knows the best mainly zone is a huge mistake .

Hes a rookie, doesnt know what the hell he's looking at yet. Why do you think DL was so successful against them.

Zone is much harder for rooks.

I expect some heavy blitzing too.

Granted, DL was a better DC then Butler, so there is that.

Zone is harder if facing a non mobile QB . A QB who can throw and run and throw on the run puts way to much pressure on a zone . They ran a lot of Waggle tier passing which put him on the edge with all his guys at different levels or in a triangle on one side of the field . This is how you let a young QB bust a zone only give him half the field with all the options in his window or running into his window.

A lot of man/zone combo coverage I am fine with , but zone blitz will get tested very hard unless we blitz from the right spot at the right time almost every time .

This kid can make the throws esp to just half the field he can also run very effective I don't want our force guy 10 yards away in a zone on the edge if he is he will run for over a 100 and throw for 300 .

Good, Im glad for the young man. By all reports, he is a hard worker, and studies his film well. Basically, what I am getting at is, that he is a Watt. The sooner he can get a full game tape of him as a pro in a regular season game, the sooner he can review the film, and start learning from his mistakes, and working on it in practice. It will only make him better by the end of the year, and if the goal is to go all in and take some risks to help us win it all, then Watt starting out the season, will hopefully only help get him up to speed ASAP so that by the Thanksgiving he looks less like rookie and more like a pro. And then with Harrison to back him up and most likely still get a significant number of reps, that should help with any "rookie wall" concerns, and of course, Harrison is just about as great as backup as you could want for injury concerns.

What is yalls bet or thoughts on how many reps Watt and Harrison each get this first game? And how much all season? Hypothetically barring injuries to either of them, I expect anywhere from a 2:1 or a 3:1 split for Watt, as long as he isn't playing terribly for some reason or anything. Should keep both of them fresh, all season long, especially Harrison towards playoffs. And it gives Watt plenty of experience, early and often, while not playing him full-time 90% of snaps. So, I expect Watt to log about 65% to 75% of the snaps throughout the season, barring injuries

When I was on the UT bolt forum, I suggested that T.J. Watt would have been a far better choice than WR Mike Williams.....One of the "smarter" Bolt fans claimed Watt wasn't even close in ability or impact of the Mighty Williams. Who will, in classic charger style, practice some week this year, get in a game, hurt his back again, and finally have surgery. Bad teams make themselves bad teams.

Not that a mobile QB is better suited to beat zone but I hope he does try to make a lot of throws on the run, more interceptions for us.

Kizer is going to have a steep learning curve. For starters, hes a spread QB adjusting to the pros and secondly, his decision making wasnt the greatest in college, not going to improve dramatically his first NFL game. So let him run for his life and throw into coverages he doesnt understand. Advantage us.

We're not ready for man coverage, wed be doing him a favor playing it. Im so sick of hearing about man being the be all end all. We're only looking to mix it up, we're not going to become primarily man coverage, no team is.

Man is not the be all end all , but playing zone requires more communication , more guys working together , and requires guys to be on the same page on every play . With new guys added and potential movement at Safety and at Slot CB why would you want these guys to be thinking all the time ?

Are we in the right coverage ?What do I do in this coverage ? If the QB rolls this way which way does my zone go ? If the QB gets on the edge do I have force ? If 2 guys flood my zone where is my nearest zone helper ?

The way to avoid that is more man or man/zone coverage if you have guys capable of playing man . Keep the D simple let guys match up and provide some help to the strong side, this will allow the DB'S to play fast and the front guys to go towards the QB.

I would loop both ends and force the QB to stay in the pocket send the heat right in his face . If in zone you can't loop the ends as they will drop into short zone a lot .Why give a running QB a 2 way go ? If in zone can't send as much heat up the middle as the inside LB'S will have short middle .

I'm kinda bummed I ordered a Watt jersey and was hoping it would be here for opening day but no idea where it's at. Plan B will be to rock the Heath Miller jersey or Lambert

*update jersey came today. I'll be ready for Sunday. First time I'll have an active player since Heath.

Wait a Sec... somehow playing zone, where the DBs and LBs can see when the QB takes off running will result in us giving up more yards than man coverage when the coverage defenders are generally not facing the QB the whole time? Okay....

It's a PWP explanation, it's not supposed to make sense we should just learn to like it.

Yes it's called force . In man coverage or man/zone very little doubt who has force in the Waggle game .What happens in zone is they flood the zone and if they can get the QB on the edge now who has force ? As a DB do I protect my zone or go get the QB ?

As I have tried to explain playing a zone when the QB is in the pocket is much different than playing a zone with the QB on the edge .

See if this helps you understand . In man coverage against 3 WR'S 3 guys lock up their man leaving 8 guys to play the run and short passes .Now when you go zone it takes at least 6 guys 1 short left, middle, and right and 1 long left middle and right .Leaving only 5 guys on the 1st. level.

Now if the QB rolls right and three options flood that zone someone is open also the QB is a threat to run as you have no one to account for him .It's basic bust the zone 101 Football . If you want to play zone against waggle someone has to play man on the backside it's the only way to get the #'s to match up .

A straight zone has no chance against a edge QB . Rule #1 to beat a spread or waggle QB . Do not let him have the edge .It's really simple math.

If we play zone a lot just watch how the big plays unfold . After that we can revisit this thread and we can discuss the why of how this happened . I will also be on a get rid of Butler campaign . It makes zero sense to try and play that soft zone this week.

man/zone cool , man cool, soft zone against Waggle and spread even a First year DC knows better than that .

I think TJ is going to shock this board the fans and the NFL It's not only the sacks but the constant pressure and always being part of the action. He's old school!

And to think his back up is James harrison. Throw in Dupree and i think this kid is going to have these guyz rock'n

I'm not sure about the year totals, but I expect this defense to get 7 sacks in the first half and have that QB too scared to come out the second half
