After learning about his injury history and watching a tape of his 2016 season lowlights, I am going to temper my enthusiasm and expectations. Should he provide a few red zone tds and 8 games this year, I will be happy. Any more than that and I will be ecstatic given how little we gave up for him.

Where you find this? All I hear SF fans talking about is his drops and I cannot find anything on the Youtubes.

I see an uninspired player because he's playing with a bunch of losers. I saw 3-4 drops that was his fault.

I'd get fired for that at my company.

He averaged 16.3 to catch last year. That stat I like.

got the same signing bonus and has the same salaries for the next couple of years as Martellus Bennett and Jack Doyle but Bennett had over 200% of the McDonald's production in 2016 and Doyle had about 150% of the production of McDonald in 2016. Worth it?

McDonald had about the same stats as Jesse James in 2016 but McDonald will make more just in annual roster bonuses than James will make in salary. Worth it?

Looks like one year deal to me....his base salary goes up a lot for 2018 and will get a $750,000 roster bonus and $150,000 work out bonus too if he's on the steelers in 2018.

After thinking about this I like it even more. Let's see we trade out 4th round pick which after we win the SB will be the 32nd and gain back a 5th and SF looks to be one of the 5 worst teams this year......wow we only move back a few spots

Now I love James but I did like what our team looked like when Green was in there. Vance will now add that element and how the heck is a team going to defend AB anywhere on the field, Bryant deep, Bell out of the backfield, JJ short middle and now Vance to help stretch the field???

I have read the knocks on him, meat hands and some injury problems.....whatever. Here is a chance to add a player who has potential at basically no cost, I like it and hope it works out. If it don't work out oh well this time of year it is hard to find a player of starter material and we have no risk at all here..........

If he can help the team, I'm all for it. Swapping picks isn't that big of a deal because I assume SF will be picking early anyway.
Watching some of his highlights, I can say he has a wicked TD spike. :dancing:

I'd say meat hands as well. 4 drops in 45 targets isn't horrible but isn't good, but when you consider how poorly thrown a lot of balls were then it makes it worse as he is dropping like 2 of every 5 catchable balls, that is a really bad rate. We are all to familiar with guys dropping passes at critical moments but this guy is almost a certainty that it will happen. I really think DBs are the most important need right now, we have zero who would end up on an NFL roster if they were cut.

Wow, I just saw that SF extended him in December with a 5 year 35m contract..... not sure I've seen anything that says he's worth 7m a year....

If they want guys stretching the field, but dropping the ball, they already have Coates and DHB for that. They didn't need to make a trade.

    grimble
    mcdonald
    mcgee

i'd like to see mcgee's hands. can he catch? we know he can block. grimble has shown worth in the red zone in camp and preseason so far. he isn't terrible as a blocker. maybe james and JJ go. ben loves to go to his TE's as a safety valve. could we see a real shake up with this group?
trade or cut all the Jr. varsity ?????????:cool:

From talking to SF fans. Apparently their old GM did that to screw the team over because he was fired a few weeks later. He's getting 4.5 million this year and Steelers can make him rework his contract or just cut him if they don't want to pay him that next year.

I didn't know DHB and Coates played TE, cause that is what we are talking. This is a good more and if it don't work out no loss but bringing in a speedy TE is good!

Thank you for the unproductive sarcasm. The point still stands. They are all receiving options whose primary value seems to be stretching the field and none of them catch the ball well enough. How many guys do you want on the field at the same time who can't catch? Seems like that might be a bit of a problem.

From what I've seen, I'm not sure what this guy brings to the table that Grimble doesn't.

Here is the contract the steelers assumed for a TE that has an injury history to play in the black and blue hard hitting AFC North.

mcgee was a good catching TE in college as well. he's not that slow either. 4.78 coming out. DJ dropped 20 lbs. this year. james dropped 20 last year. it hasn't helped them become better blockers or DJ become a bigger downfield threat. we do need guys that can do both. that is the ideal situation. grimble, mcgee and mcdonald do that. jesse would have to be the 4th option and i'm not sure he brings enough to be that. he's a fan favorite but......
