I agree with most of what you said earlier about the pass rush and secondary, but to expect Landry Jones to run the offense as well as Roethlisberger is wishful thinking. Plus, what other team has a starting caliber 2nd string QB? Do you really think Garrapolo can run the NE offense as well as Brady? Likewise with Packers offense and whoever Aaron Rodgers' backup is.

The Bills and the Jets are tanking a trade could be made for some DB help off 1 of those teams .The Browns and the Rams are looking for picks for the future a trade to 1 of them could be made as well .

Rumors that Sherman wants out of Seattle .I am sure we could get some quality DB'S if we tried.

There is obviously an organizational philosophy that prefers pass rushers to Corners.

    I can't say that I disagree.

The Steelers had the option, take OLB TJ Watt or CB Kevin King.

Essentially the Packers actually had the option first. They decided to trade back and take King.

I think this must change .I think the lack of coverage or the lack of the ability to play man shows up on 3rd. down . I don't think Ross or Gay can play man good enough to call it.I also don't think we have good enough Safety play to call man.

This leaves us with that soft zone and guys running wild like a field of deer. All the QB need to do is pick the right deer before the pass rush can get to him .

I think the pass rush is very Important as well if a team can cover long enough for that rush to get there .We used to have some great DB play and that was before the rule changes that makes it harder to play DB .Now we have a bunch of average guys asking them to cover even better Athletes than in the past .

The TE is more of a weapon now,the RB is also a weapon, and more and more Teams are going multiple WR sets . How can the front 7 combat that ? It can't IMO .

I don't think it's capable of carrying a team to the SB (not even close), but I think it is capable of being part of an overall team effort that wins a SB.

To win a SB, the offense is going to need to show up.

Well maybe they deserve to start the game against the Colts and see how they fair against 1's.

Well first play of the game Hargrave stuffs the run. Then second play because of the stupid 3-4. Watt is out guarding Sanu, their #2 which is a complete mismatch all day. Ryan identified it and took advantage of it. They looked pretty good against the run until the Falcons started spreading them out and doing some quick hits then started to mix some run in which killed us. Pretty much what the Patriots do to us. Watt looked pretty average against a decent o-line. Wasn't getting much pressure at all. You also need your corners to actually play somewhat good to get pressure from the DL and LBs.

I was going to make a thread about this but I'll just leave this here too. The best DBs in the league aren't the most desirable/team players type of guys. That's the issue. They let Keenan go and threw all that money at Cortez Allen, who went to a military school. We got a DB starting right now from Duke. Good DBs aren't Steelers type of players. Biggest risk they have taken is Burns and Davis and I'd say they were fairly safe risk but they also happen to be the best DBs we got right now.

I think one aspect that can't be overlooked to the Falcons early success against us was their Oline (which IMO is a Top 5, if not Top 3 unit.)

Once their backups went in, they did nothing offensively. Matt Simms looked so good early with the starters in but then wilted for the rest of the game.

I think the assertion, that guys like Allen and Sensabaugh are better than Gay and Cockrell, is faulty.

As far as the secondary goes, I agree with the comments that we are not getting a big name CB through trade or whatever and the only major improvement possible to stop the pass is through pass rush.

So your saying if the DB's give the OLB's a second more that would help and if the OLB's get to the qb a second faster the db's will do better...

Logic would be that the DB's need to cover for an extra second or so..

I agree, I don't expect LJ to be a good back up. Which is my point. Why didn't we bring in anyone to challenge him? Late round draft pics are nice when you have a solid back up but I'd rank LJ in the bottom half of the league when it comes to #2 QB's. Obviously most teams cannot afford 2 starting caliber QB's. But most teams with older QB's have better than LJ. The Patriots #2 is better than LJ....and I think most teams would bring someone else in to at least challenge the guy...especially when it because apparent he's not going to be healthy. I'm not saying this is going to end our season, I'm just saying it's moronic that we are even in this situation of playing 3 pre season games with a 3rd string rookie QB who wouldn't make most rosters in the NFL.

If the OLB`s get to the QB quicker, the QB will make errant throws/picks/throw the ball away. You are over thinking this.

I don't think the olb's with a straight line shot to the QB can get Brady in time.. he unloads those 2 yard passes quick. you need to cover a bit first..

That play was an example of what happens when you have bad communication. Watt lined up over Sanu just like we have seen Harrison do but just like those times he is coming on the blitz. You can tell because he never looks at Sanu and stares down Ryan. So it should have been communicated that if he goes shallow on a slant or drag route than Dirty Red should pick him up or deeper on a post route that Golden has the coverage but everyone was staring into the backfield.

Just out of curiosity, who of the available QBs would you have brought in?

I am more interested as to why Bud Dupree did not play.

If he does not play again.. something is amiss for certain.

    Yep.

This offense can easily march down the field. Why this team elects to put their "Herp Derp McDerp" hats on in the endzone is quite preplexing to me.

    Indeed.

Over 50 years of success. I am not going to argue with that either.

One preseason game is not going to make T.J. Watt bad. If anything, all this is going to do is set him off mentally; something I will enjoy seeing as an ability to transform anger and rage into results will sharpen and harden his perseverance.

Of course it's a day late and a $ short but take your pick.... As you can see the list was pretty solid at one point. By solid I mean better than what we have now.

So going by this list, the available guys right now are:
Kaepernick, RG III, Chris Ponder, Shaun Hill, Vince Young, Manziel, Josh Freeman, Brad Sorenson,Ryan Lindley

I submit to you that signing any of the guys would not stop or slow down the Backup-QB-aint-good-enough posts we see around here.

Of the many free-agent QBs on that list, the only ones given better than a two-star rating are:

    • Cousins -- he'd cost more than Roethlisberger;
    • Romo -- ancient, unhealthy and retired; and
    • Cutler -- locker room pariah, from all accounts.

The Bills had one good cornerback to trade and the sent him to Philadelphia while the Steelers sat on their hands.
