There's an old adage, Everyone loves the back up quarterback, till he throws an interception.

The thing is though, that Dobbs was a good fit in Butch Jones offense as a mobile and elusive QB. If Jones ran a pro style O and wanted a true pocket passer, he would have started Peterman or Riley Ferguson over Dobbs who both left UT because Dobbs got the nod and they didn't fit into Jones's scheme. Both of those guys are better NFL QB prospects than Dobbs IMO.

I'm not sure a QB coach at UT would have made a big difference in Dobbs arm strength and accuracy. Like BFT said, Josh seems to be a stand up young man and very smart. Time will tell if he can be a starting caliber NFL QB. Odds are he will not be. With Ben season to season now, the FO would be wise to look for his replacement in the next draft. The last draft was weak at QB and anyone who thinks Ben's successor is currently on the roster is way too hopeful. Reminds me of the saying: hope in one hand and sh*t in the other and see which one fills up faster.

PWP is a big boy and can defend himself. But just wondering how much football you've coached at any level? Opinions about someone else's opinions... Gotta love em.

Peterman actually was starting 2014. Butch wanted to redshirt Dobbs. Peterman broke his hand in the Florida game and Dobbs had to come in.

Peterman stats for the four games, completed 10-of-23 for 45 yards in four games.

Withought Dobbs at QB TN loses 2 or 3 games more each season.

Dobbs has accuracy issues but to question his arm strength makes me wonder if you ever really watched him play.

LOL. Unfortunately way too many times than I would have liked. We obviously don't (and likely won't) agree on Dobbs ability to break into the starting lineup. Like I said, time will tell. At some point in the future, if the coaches put him on the field for meaningful downs, then I will support them/him. I wish Josh the best.

I was just about to say this lol I have doubts about whether he’ll ever be a starter but that dude has a borderline cannon.

Go back and watch some of his college tape.

It jumps out of his hand

    Tomlin says....
Practicing with Pittsburgh's first team offense on Thursday, Dobbs fired a deep pass through the heart of the Steelers' secondary that ended up in the hands of Antonio Brown. It's those kind of plays that has earned Dobbs praise from head coach Mike Tomlin, who discussed his rookie quarterback following Thursday's practice.

"I thought he took advantage of the reps," Tomlin said. "He’s taken some calculated risks associated with the position, pushing the ball down the gross, which is good. He’ll get opportunities to not only prove himself, but to grow, and I thought that was reflective in his effort today.”

Having coaching experience doesn't qualify a person to make claims knowing what a person thinks or is thinking.

Out of curiosity, what player has Tomlin thrown under the bus this camp so far?

I'm rooting for the guy. I hope he takes full advantage of this opportunity...friday. And, I hope it works out well for him and our beloved steelers.
And on a side note...maybe, he can develop an innovative playing helmet to further prevent CTE. Get it patent, and his legacy will continue...way past his playing days.

I was asked if Ben told me that? I said no .. I did state that Ben doesn't see him as a NFL caliber QB either ... The reason being is Ben is NFL caliber at the position and if he can't see the skills LJ lacks then I would be very surprised in that ...

I would say you could ask anyone on the staff or the Team if they would like for LJ to be the starting QB if Ben retires today..I don't see many if any saying yes,, that's the reason that most if not all would like to see what they have from the new QB being that LJ has proved to most that he is a NFL bu at best...I still contend when he is done with the Steelers he will be out of the NFL .

You can chalk this game up as a loss, going against a top 5 secondary with spagnolo putting the rush on him this could get nasty quick....

Good. looking forward to seeing him play.

Kind of surprised by it but glad. Wouldnt have thought a locked in #3 would be getting 1st team reps.

Tangent: the problem, as I see it, is that players currently take impacts to the head without any real-time awareness of the long-term risks. And everyone says that the better protected the players are, the harder they'll hit.

So perhaps what's needed is a helmet that *hurts* when you use your head unwisely. Not CTE-hurt, mind you -- just negative reinforcement kind of hurt.

since we only have two qbs available, it would seem right for the draft pick to get the nod. lj may be practicing by then but he stil will be just getting back. no need to get him injured again at this point. welcome to the bigs kid. :smiley1::cool:

Well, the one knock that is potentially very damning is that he tends to lock on his primary receiver and throws to him regardless of how many defenders are covering him. If he doesn't possess the wiring to improve in that area, he will never be a starting QB in the NFL. I think his physical traits are just fine. But you MUST be able to scan more than 1 target in the NFL or you will suck big time. Can he improve this area? We shall see. But odds are, he won't be able to improve the area all that much. Ben often looks at more than 1 target if need be. That is part of why he is a pro bowl QB.

I don't know, the guy's pretty good at math. I think he has the "wiring" to figure out that it's best to throw to the receiver who's open. I'm sure he'll make some rookie mistakes and learn a few lessons the hard way, but now that he's finished, at least for the time being, with all of the rocket science and can devote more time to film and playbook study, I believe he'll start to blossom. Time will tell.

After a strong showing from him the Team will want their money back from LJ but LJ will send Tomlin a picture of him with that Goat a few years back and LJ will keep om keeping on...

Um..... you're forgetting one possible scenario. Dobbs comes in. Plays like you would expect a rocket scientist to play. THEN that sets the stage for a little of that patented Landry Jones vintage magic where he marches up and down the field throwing bullets and touchdown after touchdown. He leads the team to victory in a furious and uproarious comeback furthering the legend that is Landry Jones. Sending his already dozens aaaaand DOZENS of devoted fans in to a frenetic frenzy of unparalleled adulation. Then they all come here to gloat and crash the server and hence the greatest qb controversy in all of football history ensues with Big Ben ultimately winding up playing 3rd string for the rest of his career. Mark it dude.
