Take on josh dobbs day two of camp by steeler depot:

You can see the learning curve for Josh Dobbs. He’s not holding onto the ball forever but is making poor decisions and not reading coverages.

I tried to tell the fans about Dobbs when he got drafted, he has accuracy problems. Some fans thinking Dobbs could be the #2 QB this season .

As a rookie he needs to watch and listen to BR and the QB coach. He's not going to come in from not having a QB coach for four years and true QB coach fix his feet and throwing problens in two months. He will keep working hard to get better. I'm rooting for him all the way but he isn't ready to be #2 as a rookie. 99% of rookie QBs aren't ready year one.

His last five games at UT were really overlooked because of a couple of losses. 1,300 passing yards, 12 TD's, 75%, only 1 INT, 500+ rushing yards, over 10 ypc, 7 TD's. One of those games he didn't even play an entire half(so really 4 and a half games).

Steeler vol, your optimism about Dobbs is noteworthy. As a fellow Vol fan and season ticket holder, I want to see Dobbs and all the kids we see in Knoxville be successful at the next level. This draft was very weak for QBs. I expected Dobbs to get signed as an undrafted FA and was surprised he was actually drafted. Dobbs is a good guy and we all hope he can develop into a pro QB. At this point it is really a long shot. Time will tell.

Biggest thing is his footwork, which is very correctable. And yes, having a QB coach will make a big difference.

Only people saying he could take the #2 spot this year are people who don't like Landry and want to be rid of him.

I had the same expectations as you did. Are you a fan of Sutton? Some of the Vol fans around here told me they thought he was a gamer.

I'm probably more confident about Sutton's future with the Steelers. He seems to have more raw talent and unrealized potential at his position than Dobbs at QB. I feel like Dobbs played in college up to his maximum capabilities and I just don't see him being much more than a scrappy scrambler. We know that doesn't work for NFL QBs long term and its definitely not the offense Pitt wants to run. Cam will really benefit from practicing against our high caliber WRs and should see some PT this season. I also like that he can return punts. That said, I like Dobbs and hope he surprises us. He really seems to be a good guy but that doesn't mean much on the field.

According to Dobbs he had peyton manning for a QB coach for 4 years: No other college QB could have had a better QB coach:

    From NBC Sports:

Dobbs said on PFT Live that he picked Peyton Manning’s brain many times over the last four years and learned a great deal about preparing for games, something he thinks will give him an edge in the NFL.

One-on-one coaching from Manning is a real perk for a quarterback at Tennessee, a perk that quarterbacks at other colleges don’t get. Dobbs isn’t going to let that go to waste.

Pundits have suggested next year will be a good draft for quarterbacks

I think that all hinges on the success they have this season, especially Darnold needs to have a repeat year to be in the running for the 1 pick, thats if he decides to go into the draft, he just might stay in school for another year, but all these QBs need a good year to find their place in the draft....

This is the Steelers we are talking about. They gave LJ new contract so that means his #2 spot is virtually set in stone. Dobbs could double his QB rating and he still won't attain the #2 spot, period. Not this year. No way.

We know this about the steelers. They hang on to vets. Ex: dhb, moats, and maybe gay and mitchell. Lets just see the play during preseason. We always get surprised by an udfa/rookie/ or a player that took a great leap in their play

You never know in preseason... i can see LJ getting sacked and wacked in the pocket.. i have visions of Dobbs gaining some yards and moving the chains like randall cunningham... LJ has -9 yards rushing in his career... He is a lump.

And he is "figuratively" a rocket himself. He has got some rockets for legs. As far as physical ability, he blows LJ away. But can he read a D? His scout report says he tends to lock on one player and not change his target even if his original target is covered. That won't cut it in the NFL.

For what it's worth, during the BA era, Ben did the same thing. It wasn't until Haley showed up he was taught to check down.

Cut the guy some slack. He hasn't even made it through his first training camp yet. He is a 4th round prospect obviously he has some things to work on. Otherwise he would have been drafted significantly higher.

Exactly. Dobbs is pretty much where I would expect a 4th rounder to be right now. Will be interesting to see how quickly he learns.

KEEP AN EYE ON...: Rookie quarterback Josh Dobbs just made a string of quality throws in 11-man work against the third team, including an on-the-money deep out to Canaan Severin. Dobbs has had his uneven moments in camp but was cleaner from the pocket today.

    Jeremy Fowler, ESPN Staff Writer

Sounds like Dobbs had a better day today.
