Into the Badlands

I was really skeptical. My days of loving hyper stylized Kung Fu type shows ended when I was a teenager. (Used to love them on Saturday afternoons)

And the promos didn't really give a clue what the show would be like other than the "whish-whoo-whip-whoo-whish-whish-ha!-kish-thack-tishk" type action.

But nothing else was on. I was bored. A replay came on after midnight...

Wow! I'm really pleasantly surprised! This show is a keeper! MUCH better than I expected.

The danger with this genre is that the story often doesn't matter. Everything is just a set up for the next preposterous fight. But I'm digging the story so far. If a story can grab me on episode 1? I'm sold.

Just one question because I'm sure I missed it (missed the first 30 seconds to a minute or 2): Did they ever say WHY the world is the way it is? I mean, what happened to civilization? Where are the Badlands, and why is it ruled by Barons in a pseudo-feudal society? (I'll leave out the question of, "Why is a southern fried plantation owner the ruler of a martial arts army and runs a poppy field / opium empire?" LOL I'll leave that to artistic freedom.)

 

I was skeptical, but I liked it. I thought the fight scenes were well done, and they controlled themselves in terms of keeping a focus on story vs super kung-fu porn.

Even my wife liked it and she hates "Kung Fu movies".

 

Episode 1 was fun. I'm looking forward to seeing how things unfold.

 

2 episodes in, and it's still a fun show.

At first I thought that maybe the Widow was that kid's mother. But that can't be. Surely she'd recognize her own son. (And he would absolutely recognize his mother).

No. He was a new character introduced last night.

 

Any time I see him, the cowardly Ike Clanton pops into my mind.

I'll be sticking with this show, for the time being anyway, missed the first episode but caught yesterdays, good stuff. Going to catch up on the first one with AMC on demand.

 

I would just like to know how he looked older in 1993 than he does now... aside from the hair going white.

 

What did everyone think of the finale?

 

All cliffhangers working as intended: Making us want to know what happens next and tune in next season.

The monks were cool and I want to know their story (although, how Sunny didn't die from their fight is beyond me. Perhaps he's also a "dark one?")

The Widow saying she used to be like MK raises all kinds of questions.

They hinted early in the season that Sunny is from that city as well in a brief flashback, so his having a medallion of his own isn't a real surprise.

I'm glad to see Lance Henriksen wasn't just a one off guest spot.

He shouldn't by rights, but it wouldn't surprise me if Quinn survives.

 

Has been renewed for season 2. Announced in March actually but I never heard about it.

I was afraid this had been cancelled. Wasn't crazy about the season finale but overall, thought the first season was very good. I hope Quinn isn't dead, type of bad guy you love to hate, great actor.

 

Awesome! Does that mean this fall for air date?

 

Damn. I was hoping this would be their summer show. If they only renewed it 2 months ago, that isn't likely.

I want my Red Widow fix. Mmm hmmm....
