I know a lot of things can happen, and most big boards aren't even
started/completed. I would be very interested in this scenario with the right trading partners.

Think that if Watson is there at 32, the phone will be ringing off the hook with trade possibilities. It would mean only 2 of the following teams didn't draft a qb: Cleveland, San Francisco, Chicago, ny jets, Houston. Plus any number of teams with aging qbs who are looking 2 or 3 years down the road: Kansas City, Giants, yes, Pittsburgh. San Diego/los Angeles, Arizona. And I think that once all of the crap is done, he's a top 10 pick, and probably #1 qb taken. They may have problems with this, that, or the other thing as far as his form, but you can't deny his leadership skills and ability to handle the pressure.

I was just thinking the same thing about Watson. My thoughts are simple- if he is there, we take him. And keep him. But, I don't think he will be there.

i think a lot depends on the coaching turnover if there is one. i'm just not sure this is the year for one. if we sign landry and keep met i think we are much further along in development. these two have several years under their belts and it should become easier to develop them further to really see what we have. i don't however have a problem with a late rounder or even ugfa this year for a look. the cupboard won't be bare after this year for higher draft picks if thats the route we take. i'd say complete the defense and add a couple of offensive backup pieces and we won't have many needs and can afford to use that high pick at that time.

This is an excellent year to explore possibilities, I like our roster depth
and if he is available in the teens and twenties I think you have to pull the trigger.
He will become the heir apparent with Mettenberg being kept to develop as the back up.

Personally, I would prefer exploring those possibilities next year. I agree with what Mac said and going defensive once again in this draft and really solidifying that side of the ball. I don't think Watson is there in the latter half of the first either. IF he was there, I wouldn't be mad if they went up to get him but would prefer a pick for the defense.

And as much as we moan and groan about Landry, I believe they will retain him. Too much invested in an important position.

My ideal scenario, as I've stated before, would be to trade down for 2018 picks and go for a QB in the 2018 draft.

Someone is going to severely reach for watson. Stud in the championship, but I'm not yet convinced he's going to succeed in the pros

With the proper team/ coaching staff he will flourish. As will Truibiskey.

That's OK Turtle, we will then make Matthew Stafford the highest paid player in the game :)
This is where the scouts come into play, it's imperative that the Steelers make the correct
choice at the qb position. And give him the tools to succeed, coaching, players, etc.
IE, Watson would be a fine example and we have the roster in place to do it, and if he would slip into the teens. I would hope the Steelers would pull the trigger.

We don't need extra draft picks, we need impact players.

Agreed but what impact is Watson gonna have on this team right away? Like last year this draft is loaded between rounds 2-4, get more picks for trading back 3 picks and load up on impact players. Of course you need to make sure you have players ranked all pretty close to make that move. So if you want to move back 3 spots you better have 3 players that you are good on with close to the same grade otherwise it don't make sense to trade back. JMO

Granted this would be a luxury pick RIGHT NOW, but what happens when Ben's skill set erodes(You
have already witnessed this, see last year) You would still have draft picks to address other needs. And we have a possible franchise qb
being mentored by a franchise QB and good coaches.

Depends on a lot of things.. Does Landry Jones resign? Basically buying us 2-3 years on finding the right QB if he does. Is there a pass rusher or DB that can make a impact right away available? Does he fit the Steelers mold. I highly doubt he's there to be honest.

I agree with the what if stuff but I feel if we were to bring in Watson or any QB in the 1st round it could be more of a negative than positive. Let's say Ben has 2-3 good years left like most of us say here. So with them years you need to find a replacement but you also need to build now so them 2-3 years don't slip by. I feel drafting a QB in the 1st round this year would not be a good move for the next 2-3 years in helping us to get to the SB. I also feel that if we were to draft him I am not sure how much help Ben would be, yes he is talking retirement but we all know he wants to play a few more years.

I have said before I would draft a QB every year since this is the position that is most important to a team. I haven't watched the Shirne or Senior bowl games yet but I am sure there are guys in this draft (Kelly, Beathard, Gustasfson ???) that put in the right position could succeed. I know the guys later on in the draft are not as high profile as Watson but there isn't anything saying that because we draft him in the !st that he will pan out either. So if he don't there is a wasted pick in a time when we need to build around a guy we already know can do it....jmo.:smiley1:

I know taking Watson if he's there doesn't help our immediate future......but man we could be sitting on a gold mine until Ben retires. I'm not gonna sit here and say he's a can't miss because I don't know enough to know how well he understands the game especially at the pro level but that kid has had a impressive couple of years and physically he has all the tools to be great, along with amazing accuracy.

The time is now, if he drops we have got to have him. He would need to go to a team like the Steelers
    that will help him succeed.

I agree. I have watched him a lot and know people close to that program. I wont say cant miss either but I know people that will say he is as close of a sure thing as any quarterback they have been around. now Clemson isn't known for their history of great qbs but one guy I know was around matthew Stafford at Georgia a lot.

I would love, I mean love, to have him but again. when those workout numbers come in. he will be top 10 I would say

What he did against Alabama, the Patriots of college football, the last two years is impressive. He doesn't get rattled. I'd be perfectly happy if we snagged him at 30 or even moved up a few spots to get him.

We would be way dumb to not get him if anywhere close to our pick..He will be a top 10 pick though so no way he even gets close ...
