Fact: I've never been to the steel city. I'll get that out.

I'm curious as to the sports pecking order in this town? I always assumed it was 1. Steelers 2. Pirates. 3. Pitt. Thoughts?

    Speaking about fanbase:
Almost everyone is a Steeler. Many are Pens. Some are Pirates.

However, if we're talking about successful teams recently...
Pens/Steelers... then every other sport (including cricket, lacrosse and even curling)... And then the Pirates

    Steelers

    Penguins
    Pirates
    WVU/Pitt/Penn State

Someone else said it and it's true: Steelers first and it's not close. In the surrounding communities (where I grew up) there are steelers flags and banners on houses and porches all season long.

I hate baseball. I wish it was Pens before Pirates but sadly, I don't think it is. Steelers by a mile then Pirate slightly ahead of the Pens then Pitt.

I think with the Pens recent success they've received more fandom than the buccos. Having the best player in the world certainly helps.

    steelers
    pens now
pirates- when they were winning it was the pirates then pens. these two are back and forth depending on whos winning at the time. the pirates used to be pretty good and have had their time in the spotlight too.

    Pittsburgh likes who ever wins.

If the Steelers are good, tickets are hard to come by and prices are sky high. If they tank, you get tickets for free.

Pens are a huge draw right now, they have sold out almost 300 straight home games. Which for the NHL that is huge.
Tickets for them are crazy expensive, about as bad as going to a Steelers game.

Pirates are drawing much better now that the team is more competitive, although they seem to going back to not being competitive.

    I'll say
    1. Steelers
    2. Pens
    3. Pirates.

Definitely got more bandwagons. I guess I'm just looking at the big picture. Pens have won 4 Championships in the span of the Pirates winning 1 Wild Card game and that's it. Just surprised by the following the Buccos have for being horrible for 35 years and hockey never gets the respect it deserves.

Agreed. Baseball is Americas past time though, so there are always more baseball fans than hockey fans.

i never really knew that Pittsburgh was that big of a hockey town but the love the pens

I've been to Pittsburgh numerous times and have been there for Steelers, Penguins and Pirates games. All get support, but in my limited experience in Pittsburgh, the Pens seem to have more of a following.

If the Steelers had a few awful seasons combined with Pirates being a perrenial contender, it could be a baseball town first.

I disagree putting the Pena in front of the Pirates. It took the Steelers the longest time to catch the pirates as the most loved franchise. Does nobody remember the Pens almost moving. Look at how PNC park turned into the most racaous in the league when they were winning and ownership wasn't screwing over the fans. I guarantee you a lot of the older generation will still put the Pirates on top.

Really? I thought the Pirates were good for a couple years in a row before last season? I watched a Pirates playoff game a couple years ago and it was crazy how much a part the crowd played. They we're so loud they made Johnny Ceuto drop the ball a couple times. I thought it was awesome!

Last few years.. Pens have been around 10th in attendance with an average of 18k. Pirates around 15th with 30k. 81 games of that bull**** too. I know PPG Arena has way less seats but if there was more I don't think it would keep the sellout streak. Highest average in NHL is 22k in Chicago which has 2.8 million people compared to Pittsburgh 300k. Long story short, we support our teams.
