He doesn't go and fight for the ball.

Otherwise he is an all around threat, even contributes on ST's.

I know he has a couple busted fingers lately and plays in pain and with a lot of heart but I have never seen him use his height and hands to out jump a defender.

    Am I wrong?

I'm not sure you can put that label on him yet ala Wallace...some of the throws to him lately have been under thrown and to the inside which makes that a difficult catch to try and come back on and high point. He has quite a few highlights from college making contested catches so I think the willingness and ability is there. The fact that he comes in the game getting limited snaps because of his hand and all he does is go deep doesn't help the percentages. I'd like to think it's because of his hand but either way they need to find a way to get him more involved in other ways....can't just go deep every play, too easy to defend.

From what I've read the only way he can really catch the ball right now is over the shoulder. Until he heals the only real option is to send him deep.

I see it the same way. At times lately he looks like he doesn't want to get involved in contact when receiving. Not sure if he afraid to fall on his hands. Yet he does okay on ST. One thing for sure though, he has like one catch in about 4 games. That is not good.

Has there been any detailed information about his hand injury? Pics? Cause?

Thank you, CK, for pointing out the obvious. And no green font, the guy has broken fingers. Kind of an important injury for a receiver.

He should be able to catch it with 3 fingers, I've seen Beckham do it.

Kidding of course. I agree, tough crowd. Coates was doing fine before the injury and I'm sure he will be fine again.

I guess Coates hasn't shown he could catch yet in practice. I don't think he had any offensive plays today.

Would've been nice too loosen the D up though... We're getting good at about the right time, hope he bounces back during the push

Green loosened up the D today, that was good enough for the win. They will need Coates down the stretch.

I cannot wait until Sammie or DHB get healthy. Not that Cobi has played bad, but we need that fast deep threat to really open things up for green and AB. If Sammie would get healthy our offense would be crazy good.

Dulac says today in PPG that Coates has been catching okay in practice. This scares me in that his problems could be mental and not injury related. Hope that's not the case but something to watch for.

What was the context? Been catching in practice all along or catching in practice this week?

    Big difference.

He didn't say if it was just this week. Your right if it just this week that could mean he is getting over his injury. If he was catching all along in practice then it could be mental. Looks like it just remains to be seen.
Let's see if he gets any offensive opportunities this week.

Odd that I saw him on the return team for the onside kick attempt by the Giants at the end of the game. Usually they are going to put the guys there who are most trusted with catching. aka "the hands team". Obviously if they recovered and scored the lead was too great but just something I noticed. And I think Mitchell was on the other side of Cobi Hamilton. Maybe that's an indication that his fingers are healed if they trust him enough to be on the field at that time.

Also did anyone else notice that no one blocked for Hamilton, the guys just stood there waiting for Hamilton to get blasted lol. It looked like the two outside guys, Coates and someone else, just stood there. Mitchell I think was just to the inside of Hamilton and he may have tried to get in there for a block. I haven't seen any replays to see, just wondering if anyone else saw that or I missed something.

Yep, looked like Hamilton caught the onside kick, then was left by himself with nobody around him to protect him from getting blasted.

I thought that was standard strategy. The guy who catches the onside kick has to get on the ground as soon as possible.

Yea' then his teammates should protect him by get around him so that he dosen't get pounced on. Coby did the right thing by catching it and going down. But when the ball is in the air nobody went towards Coby to help him in case he missed it or funbled it. Usually you want to see as many teammates as possible around the ball. Looked like Coby was just left by himself on this one.

Hopefully whatever lingering pain that Sammie is in can heal itself in due time.

Whether we like it or not, he has shown to stretch the field. He did it early and he can do it again provided those fingers heal up quick and well. No need to give up on him just yet.
