I didn't like Ben going to Coates on 3rd and 2. However, I had no problem with the 1st down shot earlier in the game. During the game, one of the announcers related that, per an interview with a Steeler coach, Coates was able to make over-the-shoulder catches in practice.

To those saying he was not getting separation - I disagree. Ben underthrew both passes, and Coates had to limit his speed to avoid overrunning the ball.

Not over sophisticated on my offensive strategy or the study of it statistical numbers. I'm just shocked that no one has really stepped up to the plate during the double coverage of Antonio and the absence of Bryant. With a big arm of Rothlisberger as things go in the NFL someone fits in that slot with any talent and a star is born. It's right there!

Perhaps they should just start rotating receivers no matter what their status in and out of that missing slot until "the one" is found. Sheeesh, bring em in. I thought maybe DHB but like the rest of our he appears to be flashes and not steady.

At this point, would you rather them have just brought back Wallace on the cheap? I personally wouldn't just because I think he's a cancer in the locker room. At least he seemed so in Miami. I'm just saying I wish we had SOME option to stretch the field and keep defenses honest and from over committing on AB. Stupid Martavis... if only that guy had a single brain cell in his head.

So everyone here is forgetting what he can do when healthy?

Are we forgetting his explosive ability? Are you not considering he has to block sometimes when he's out there with those hands. I don't think you can numb his hands up so that he can't feel the pain.

He'll work through this slump and be ready if/when they make it to the post season, when they'll need him the most.

Did we all not jaw drop when he caught 2 passes for 60 yards in the Denver game? Think he had a couple key blocks as well. Like it or not he's the speed guy for now and they have to show teams they'll throw to him. Would love to see him on slants, but apparently those are too hard for him to catch right now.

I'm surprised no one has gotten any pictures of his hands...

    Quite.

Coates is dealing with injury, underthrown balls and a classic sophomore slump.

I've been frustrated as hell watching it - a few more catches from him and our record could be different - but throwing him under the bus in the way some are here is short sighted at the moment.

Even with 2 broken fingers defenses still have to respect his speed as was shown in the colts game. Back the safeties up and then run it down their throats with Bell.

Green showed what he can bring to the table after the rust comes off.

Don't think anyone here is throwing him under the bus, but if it's in his Hands or head he hasn't been catching sh-t. Show us he can catch in practice before throwing him in live games.

Others have said we forgot what he can do, I don't think we forgot, but he has what 1 pass in last 5 games, come on man, if your injured and can't catch just sit until you can catch.

We have had to use Coates because DHB has been out ....The truth is Coates can't really catch right now , but the space that is created is needed.....I hope DHB is ready by the next game then they can allow Coates to heal up....

Our best O is still on the shelf....If Coates and DHB can get healthy they need to be the outside WR'S .....Greene is showing true mismatch potential...Brown and Eli have both proved they are great in space and have the best hands on the Team...

So the 2 WR 2 slot 1 TE formation should be used when all guys are ready ....With the speed of Coates and DHB Teams will be forced to shade to each of those guys that extra space our other 3 could tear apart ....

Only on some plays mainly long distance can always pull Greene and bring in Bell in short yardage we can always pull Ben and insert Bell at QB... So not this package every play , but as a healthy dose of explosive passing options ...

I would have Bell on the field for every play other than a few plays off for rest. The reality is that he makes our passing game better than anyone you've listed other than Brown (even when he lines up at WR). Now, if it's 3rd and 16, and he's due for a rest anyway, then sure, go 5 wide w/o Bell. If it's anything other than an obvious passing down, having Bell on the field helps our passing game immensely just because of the defensive personnel groupings that people are forced into.

As to pulling Ben and direct snapping to Bell, only in short yardage, and only against a team that can't stop the run even when they know it's coming (because with Ben on the sidelines they will know it's coming).

Plenty of posts here declaring he's just not good enough etc etc.

Agree that if he's struggling physically then he shouldn't be put in those positions, but he will be doing this stuff in practice. As a few others have pointed out, there are extra factors around the non-catches.

PWP is right that if DHB were healthy there would be more space for Coates to get over his slump.

The problem is when it's 3rd and 2 and Ben throws a 50yd bomb incomplete to Coates, that kills the offense. Ben needs to throw him some shorter passes, so Coates can get his confidence back.

Only thing Green has caught so far are wide open lobs downfield with his enormous paws (which is nice) - but not much or nothing in coverage.

Bell can throw a lob ball if a Team tries to play 1 on 1 ....Brown and Eli could both run jet sweeps ...Brown has also showed he can pass ....So just because Bell comes in at QB it don't mean a Bell run is automatic....We have the ability to run 10 or so plays off that look ...

So yes I would be willing to take Bell off some esp. after a big run or multiple totes and I would also be willing to take Ben off in certain situations a few plays a game ...These extra looks don't hurt you, they help you they put a lot of pressure on the other Team....Basically you run a couple of different sets with a couple of different plays you force the other Team to spend valuable practice time to be prepared just in case you run it.....

The Pats do things like this all the time ...

Coates can play. The drops can be overcome, but his hand has to be healthy enough, so that, he's doesn't concentrate on the pain in catching the ball. But, actually concentrate on catching the ball. We don't want him to start to compensate by catching the ball with his body...do we?!

Catching the ball to the body is a good thing in certain conditions. You can't be all inclusive when you say it that way. It's a third hand.

Are you saying have Coates and DHB in the game at the same time.? If so then we would have 2 receivers who can't catch. I'm with jeh, I like receivers who can catch. Although I would use DHB for end sweeps and end arounds, reverses, etc.
