In 1988 I had gall bladder surgery, I was 46 at the time, I knew I had a problem weeks before it folded me over one evening after dinner, but I never went to a doctor and was sucking down rollaids so I could go to work, they diagnosed me with a heart attack in emergency but I knew that I wasnt having a heart attack, finally at 2 am a surgeon said prep me for gall bladder surgery, as it turned out I had a stone the size of a quarter that killed my bladder and I had gang green through out my organs so he made a 15 inch incision so he could clean all the gang green out and he removed my appendix as well, one less thing to worry about bursting, moral of my story, dont wait weeks to see a doctor when you know something is wrong....

This is a pretty subjective thing, but if you had symptoms like an extreme headache, problems with speech or mobility, or other more obvious signs of serious problems after a head injury, a Dr. might want to do a CT scan (or you could push for one), which could reveal a clot or bleeding. They would either decide to operate or try to control it with medicine.

A lot of acute head injuries, especially ones from fighting, happen when alcohol is involved, so some symptoms are probably harder to realize or diagnose.

They really are. I've had a few concussions, (well, maybe more, but a few diagnosed ones- one being a grade 3) and I can say that they are all different. My little girl was getting into the pool at the YMCA and slipped on the tile. She hit her head, cried for a minute, but seemed fine.

After the lifeguards observed her for a while, they let her go back in, but I watched her like a hawk because I knew how those symptoms could flip like a switch. She was fine for an hour or so after, but sure enough she started complaining of feeling sick, and was in the ER an hour later. She ended up being fine as it was a low grade concussion, but you just never know with head injuries.

The story I mentioned earlier probably changed my life actually. That happened a very long time ago, and when I was a younger man I guess you could say I was pretty pugnacious. I hung out with hockey players on weekends and fights at parties or bars were pretty regular. Anyway, after that happened I always just walked away, because I saw what could happen to someone if you hit them just right.

There are people that will go to their graves saying Ali got parkinson's from fighting for too long and especially for his fight with Larry Holmes. Holmes has still never gotten over how badly he brutalized him in the fight but the ref wouldn't stop it. I really don't know if there's any correlation to head trauma and parkinson's though. I can definitely tell you that that disease is TERRIBLE though. My wife's uncle got it and told us a couple of years ago on Christmas and about a year and a half later or so I was preaching his funeral. He went down QUICK.
