A player like Pernell McPhee of the Bears, not sure of his contract status though. Just a player who can come in on 3rd downs and get after the QB.

Pass rushers do not come cheap even if they are situational.

More than likely though, Pittsburgh is going to go with their own considering that there is not anyone available for them to nab that they like.

Yup this. We are all crossing our fingers for Dupree. If everyone is healthy and secondary is improved our D will be solid by the end of the year. Thing is if shaz, bud, or cam go down its back to crap again

I think at this point if Dupree comes back they're looking at having him fully in game shape by the playoffs.

Aren't you happy that one of our players had a good game?
Not to mention JJ is having a pretty solid season thus far.

I'd like to see James turn it on one more time.

    James is spent.

Our only hope is Dupree, I would think he could jump right in ready to go. I'm a little worried though... Tunch and Wolfe don't think he will have much of an impact if any this year, they suspect he might not play at all. They say so far he has done light exercise too. You would think by now he would be closer than that.

If our defense was playing better, Ben never got hurt, and an outside guy was our only missing piece ... a timely trade might be perfect. But as it is right now, I think it would be a waste of draft picks.

If we can play it safe and get to the playoffs, I'd rather just see Butler send the kitchen sink with blitzes to get pressure.

No surprise blitz, no DB blitz, no creative pressure, no mismatches, no overload + no Heyward + no Shazier... you get the point.

Under the current scheme & playcalling, no OLB is going to get the highlights you are expecting.
Trying to create pressure with 4, while 7 are dropping into coverage means that even if we got a big pass rusher, he'll probably get double teamed.

I believe if we had Dupree in the lineup James would get there more often. It has been pretty easy keeping James down with no other true pass rusher in these last two games. Cam and BD help James out a ton. We would have them coming from a few places. Not saying BD is anything like Woodley, but it helps to have two decent pass rushers and not just one. Just my thoughts on that. However; if we could fine a good pass rusher and the deal was right I would hope they would do it.

We need to scrap the 3-4 all together and we need to stop focusing on LB'S and start focusing on pass rushers and DB'S ...

All teams need outside pass rushers. We are no exception.

For some reason they thought Tuitt and Heyward would take care of that for us. I haven't seen many interior dlinement dominate games week in week out. Maybe Reggie White?

Agree, but he plays off the edge as well. He does everything well.

Aaron Donald has dominated exclusively on the interior (9 sacks as a rookie, 11 last year)

Every week year in year out? JJ Watt might have to call it a career after this back injury.

Watt and Donald are disruptive, but consistent pass rushers so much so that you can forgoe an outside rush? Not sure?

A trade for a pass rusher would not help under the current scheme. ...I think I read somewhere that there is on average about 65 offensive plays a game per side......so multiply that by 16 games...thats 1040 snaps where the defense is on the field.....so for this example lets assume a 50/50 split run to pass....so for 520 snaps a year they are rushing a passer.....520 times a year to get a sack....and if a player gets 10 a year we as fans are pretty darn happy with their year. .....thats getting a sack on 1.92% of tries...now add in the fact that Butler has had our LB's dropping into coverage even more....thats dropping the possible sack number even farther.

Aaron and J.J. are within another universe all together. To say that both have proven that a team can build talent around them is an understatement.

Realistically guys, if Pittsburgh does want more sacks, they are going to have to draft 4-3 defensive ends with explosive power that is off the charts or a HWS specimen.

Someone like Takkarist McKinley of UCLA fits the bill. He is essentially a smaller but more twitchy and just as explosive version of Bud Dupree. Others like Caroll Phillips also fit the bill.

So you think the 3-4 has ran its course in Pittsburgh or just in general? I will always be partial to it myself. It's the same defense that gave Peyton Manning fits.

We're really not a 3-4 anymore. I'll always be partial to 4-3 though, I grew up on the Steel Curtain.

I like the 3-4 "IF" you have one or two good edge rushing OLB's. And the Steelers have had some, guys like Mike Merriweather, Jason Gildon, Kevin Greene, Greg Lloyd, Joey Porter. But we don't have any guys like that, they never seem to pan out, Jarvis Jones is the latest guy that didn't live up to draft day hype.
The reason we don't have good edge rushers is BECAUSE THEY ARE HARD TO FIND. DeMarcus Ware and Dwight Freeneys don't grow on trees.

It is much much much easier to find 4 studs on your defensive line, than it is to find 2 good edge rushing LB's.

Personnel wise, if you ask me, we have the horses for a 4-3 right now. And flipping from a 4-3 to a 3-4 during the game only causes problems for opposing offenses. And you can even mix it up further with a 3-3-5 alignment.

Heck,it would even be good if we could flash that Buddy Ryan 4-6 defense and put 4 horses on the line, use a single LB, and 6 DB's.

The Steelers are way too easy to prepare for because they are only going to show you a couple looks on Defense.

I'd like to see the Steelers play that 4-6 sometime, and bring a safety up slowly and blitz the QB from off the edge.

For the 4-6 to work you need a fast LB who tackles well and plays sideline to sideline. I'm a big fan of Jim Schwartz "shoot the gaps" 4-man front, and blitz a safety.

The Steelers are trying to play a 3-4 and don't have the 3 horses to get pressure or shed blocks to stop the run, and they don't have a talented edge rushing LB.

But they do have the horses to play a 4-3, or a 3-3-5, or a 4-6 - you notice that the last 2 options employ a nickel or dime DB.

I'd rather have an extra DB or 2 in there, than Jarvis running into brick walls all day.

The way Teams are using TE'S that are basically WR'S and RB'S who are basically WR'S the 4 LB'S are put at a disadvantage most of the time ....Also the quick passing game is slowed with more big men up front to bat down balls ....
