I guess I can't argue with it, glad they are getting playing time. They are definitely not NFL ready as they both are getting burned. They do have upside and hopefully we scrape wins as they keep progressing

Might as well play them. There is nobody else. Do not forget how bad troy was his rookie year. By the end of the year he was a lot better and then the rest is history.........

For Troy, things had to get worse before they got better.

    Nice article, thanks.

There is good news in this piece. A couple of years ago, we stopped blitzing because the secondary was suspect. But that secondary didn't have any additional upside.

This secondary has plenty of upside. With any luck, if we make the pl.... (I couldn't type it), the young guys have some experience, Dupree is back, maybe we can kick it up a notch?

Hopefully by the time Dupree is back, the game will have slowed down for both Sean and Artie.

Problem is you're stifling them by trying to protect them in the scheme!

You got them to make plays on the ball. You can't harp on them to play the assignment, play the assignment, stay back, play the zone. Then gripe about why they're hesitant when you ask them to make a play.

These guys need the chances to make plays.

You have to force bad throws that you allow them to make plays on! It's not rocket science that if you're not pressuring the QB he's going to take your rookies apart!

We see other teams using the talent with what they can do the first year while letting them grow.

give the WRs a cushion and tackle the catch...
    bend but don't break...
"We're going to scale back the rookies workload"...
"they'll play when we're confident they know the defense"...
    etc

these are all things we've heard quite often and are indications of a very cautious mindset on the defensive side of the ball, which is in stark contrast to the offense. (3rd and 2, let's go deep) This defense in its current form doesn't take chances and that is how the coaches are gearing their play calls and game plan. They are doing what they think is best to give them a chance to win. Would it be better if we took more chances? I don't know, we are already giving up big chunks on the perimeter without blitzing. I guess they will pressure more when they feel comfortable, which is tough to watch at times.

If they feel Burns and Davis are holding them back from blitzing, why not have those two blitz off the corner? Both are fast enough to get there. Then you don't have to worry about how they are going to blow their coverage assignments.

damned if you do, damned if you don't I guess. They have been emphasizing speed in the most recent drafts so it would be interesting to see how they would perform when the other team is being pressured from all angles. Let the players use that speed to our advantage, but I don't think the coaches are in that attack mode quite yet.

I agree with the bolded sentence. Coaches are just being cautious right now.

Just curious, if Butler doesnt use them in a blitz package how will he ever know if they can handle it? And after 8 games a high draft pick should be able to do his job on a blitz, this isnt rocket science, I get tired of hearing steeler coaches saying it takes 2 or 3 years for our draft picks to understand our defense when rookie DBs start for other teams and perform well....

    http://www.steelersdepot.com/2016/11/keith-butlers-blitz-comments-make-sense/

I call bogus excuses!!! Butler is living in his fears. He isn't calling good games and is being out matched on game days .

Last year he blitz twice as much with a virtual rookie in cockrell, old slow man at safety, Blake who can't cover grandma. And a DL in Tuitt who was learning as he played.

The TD by Gronk, most thought is was Davis fault for not rolling over there is coverage but Lake said it was all Golden and Davis did his job. Are they protecting their rookie or throwing golden under the bus or is w. Allen that much better than Golden and there is where the real problem lies.... Also if they're blitzing less shouldn't they be better against the run??? We've gotten worse there too but knowing this coaching staff they'll throw Timmons under the bus for that.

Or do they even know what the problem is on defense? I was a huge Butler for DC fan but starting to regret it now. Time will tell.

Same things being said when DL was here. Then we heard Dan Rooney get involved in that. I don't know the answer tbh.

The answer is, in all 3 of our losses we never pressured any of the 3 QBs and in philly with a rookie starting it's a no brainer you always go after him, lebeau always pressured rookie QBs and thats why he always beat them, I know 1 thing, we better get after flacco or else we lose this sunday....

True or win in at least 2/3 phases. Good D and special teams or good D and O or good O and special teams u get the picture

Is anyone surprised that, given the fact at how much Tomlin wanted him that Justin Gilbert has yet to see any meaningful snaps sans the Kansas City game?

I was under the impression he would have a larger snap count at least in a dime defense by now and not have very little action.

I noted during the NE game before half they were getting to Brady and pressure was good. Second half comes and no pressure. Never understood what happened .. Why no pressure. NE adjusted to offset the pressure?

I don't buy it ,our personnel was worse last year. I understand being cautious but that is a significant drop off from last year. Like many have said ,how are they supposed to get better when they aren't even allowed to cover anyone? If that's the plan and they are gonna stick to it then they have to let our OLBs and DL get after the QB. I've been saying for years that they are so scared of getting gashed against the run that they seem to just try and clog lanes without no real attempt at a pass rush move...even our OLBs they initiate contact keeping their outside shoulder free and wind up getting swallowed up. Notice how JJ seemed to have a pretty good game by his standards because he was "allowed " I think to work in space. The only one with enough pure power is Harrison and if they ever called a hold more than once per 100 attempts it would be almost as good as a sack.

Something has to give because it seems to be getting worse each week. This D that we're running is just keeping our D on the field and our O off and that's the exact opposite of what we need to win. It's ok when it's bend but don't break but we are getting broken. I know some of the injuries aren't helping but it's Butlers job and Tomlins to figure something out. The more our O can see the field the better chance of finding a rythm to score points which will make our Ds job easier....
This cautious approach is limiting our ability for big plays and TOs on defense...its death by 1,000 cuts

A very lame approach if you ask me. Shows no confidence in the guys that you have in there. Other teams have rookies playing and blitz effectively. If we plan on meeting up against any team in the playoffs then they better start pressuring the QB's or it will be one and done.
