I saw a story link on Facebook this morning that had the Steelers looking at a cap surplus of 32 million to get things done in the off season. I can't find the link anymore but can anyone confirm the story or was it a Facebook hoax?

Granted there are some guys that are due a payday one or two maybe getting a big pay raise but that is still some change to play with .

It could be true when you factor in all the guys who won't be back next season, once AB gets his new contract and if they sign Bell to franchise tag most of that cap space will be gone.

That number is high.. but if/when Antonio and/or Bell are resigned.. then that number will sharply decrease.

This is not even accounting for the likes of Shazier and others.

Yup AB is eating half that up! No way he stays if he doesn't. Bell should get an extension, but they'll tag him at @ $10 million. So you're looking at $5 million

Well he won't have a choice next year and really if it comes down to it the steelers could franchise him the next 2 years so he has at least 3 more seasons in the black and gold.

we also have a lot of players to sign to get to 53. i believe we only have 35 guys under contract to start the season. that includes cannan severin and mihalik. villenueva will need a contract too as he is a erfa. we lose wallace and have to sign finney and hubbard. we lose fort and timmons. wheaton and would have to sign hamilton. we lose DJ and grimble and nix. we lose JJ and harrison. we lose cockrell and gilbert, warren, shamarko, dangerfield, boswell, chickillo, mattews, toussaint. lots of holes to fill.

    warren
    AV
    cockrell
    gilbert
    hubbard
    finney
    hamilton
    boswell

i'd have to say these guys are for sure keepers. warren is really getting up there but....

we still need backups at many spots and still have to get to 53. do we want so many that are brand new to our system? DE would be thin, ILB would be thin, OLB would be real thin, TE would be thin, RB would be thin, inerior OL would be thin, safety and corner would be thin. just saying we have a lot of holes and bell and AB will use a good deal of that extra change we now have.

Steelers aren't going to franchise Bell unless he is asking for something ridiculous. Using the franchise tag isn't team friendly. Theyd much rather work out a contract. They aren't just going to use it as a means of forcing Bell to stay here.

Pretty much this. In addition though.. this does complicates things with Antonio Brown in spite of his unusual season thus far.

Add the likes of Al and Shazier.. and this offseason will be intriguing as how it is going to shape out.

By my calculation they are at:
~ 127.2 million in commited 2017 cap space
If the projection of a 160 million cap becomes reality, than the projection of around 32 million is pretty accurate.

Keep in mind.... that's with only 34 players under contract. So they've got a lot of adds to make just to build a roster.

Also, A franchise tag for Bell would be 11.5 million

Timmons, Jarvis, Deangelo, Wheaton, Cody Wallace, Harrison, Landry, S.Johnson, D.Johnson, Matthews are UFA

    Hubbard, Cockrell are RFA

Villanueva, Nix, Fort, Finney, Touissant Grimble, Dangerfield, Chickillo, Boswell are all ERFA. They'll be cheap to retain, but currently counting against the 2017 cap. All ERFA can be retained for ~525k offers.

    Assumptions:
    Qualify most of our ERFAs
    2nd round tender Cockrell
    Low Tender Hubbard
Keep 2 cheap vet UFAs (Matthews and Johnson say)
    Re-sign Deangelo
    Let all other UFAs walk
    Tag Bell

we'd be at about ~150 million in cap space with 50 contracts

Getting a long term deal for Bell and Brown would create more cap space.

Basically, they are in good shape... but throwing around "32 million in cap space" is misleading

Looks like AB's tactics worked and everyone forgets he still has 1 more year on his contract. Make him honor it then tag him.

Looks like the Steelers tactics worked, and AB never held out, and settled for restructures that moved money up front in the contract without creating any new money.

Makes plenty of sense to work out a long term extension with one year left.

AB has honored his contract, the Steelers did right by AB, they've handled perfectly. All while stating they don't renegotiate until the final year. Would look clownish not to renegotiate in final year.

In a perfect world he would just shut up and honor his contract. They had to say these things to get him to honor it in the first place. So lets not like AB did them any favors.

Steelers have a lot of holes to fill regardless of what happens with current players contracts. Inside and Outside linebackers are now becoming a need in the offseason. With Timmons, Jones and Harrison most likely gone... the depth at ILB and OLB is thin, to say the least. Add Shazier's and Dupree's injury troubles and it's downright scary. A proven free agent OLB would be nice if the cap space is available. First pick in the draft will be either OLB or ILB. Obviously.

I'll never understand the AB hate

He'll get a new deal, with a year left on his contract, just like he should. Steelers did right by him and he did right by them, in the end, he'll be a Steeler for life. :steelflag:

i also believe there is some money to be spent on AV for starting above his contract this year. he got some from this same thing for last year. is there any of these others that may qualify for this type of payment also RPO? chickillo or boswell possibly? there is also incentive pay for some players that has to be factored in if they reach those goals. we may also have some carry over money from this year. right?

if warren is re-signed he would usually count about 1 mil of this 30+ mil. thats been his going rate the last few years i think.

Draft another RB and use Bell's money to sign defensive help. As good as Bell is, he's not a player that makes the Steelers unbeatable. The Steelers are 24-15 with him. Good, not great. Throw in the injuries and suspensions and it's a no-brainer.

Karlos Williams plus a top pick in a great RB draft and you've got the position covered a lot more cheaply and can patch the holes on D.

Warren only counts 665k against the cap, even though he has a 1.05m sakary + 80k bonus. the NFL is very veteran friendly, so there is a veteran cap benefit rule for 1 year contracts.

Warren's minumum contract is just over 1 million as a 10 year vested veteran.
