To answer your question Landry and Zach are not our future franchise QBs and we won't look to focus on obtaining a franchise QB until Ben is gone and we go 3-13 and draft very high.

We could do like we did with Landry, take a gamble on a mid rd QB and maybe get lucky like the skins and boys but unless that happens, the above scenario takes place.

I think from next years draft on if there is a franchise type QB that they really like when we pick we should go after him instead of waiting until Ben retires and we go 3-13.

This may take a couple of years to get the QB they want, but we need to start looking now. I think I heard today Ben only played 16 games a year only 3 times in his 13 year carrie.

Haley's plays take way too long to develop. Our line is great when running the ball or quick passes are being delivered. It is time to get an OC who can help Ben rather than get him injured. Tired of Haleys lack of consistent ball control.

What happened to the Todd Haley who brought in the quick-release stuff that kept Ben upright and uninjured? Did I dream that?

I think Justis Mosqueda of Bleacherreport has a better insight on quarterbacks of the future and how they should be assessed in terms of the financial maintenance.

"The new conversation around quarterback contracts will be changing soon, judging by the climate of the 2016 season. No longer is the battle trying to acquire a passer at any cost, handing over a blank check when given the opportunity, but to properly value game managers at the position, allowing for cornerstones of team identity to come from the defensive side of the ball."

? This sounds more like vintage Bruce Arians than Todd Haley.

I agree. Arians could move the football between the 20's better than any I have seen, but in the redzone he couldn't get the score. Haley can manage a game very well, but his plays lack structure. The OL coach is amazing and should be given much more credit for the sucess of the running game

Munchak is a Hall of Fame offensive lineman.. so it is no surprise that players like Alejandro Villanueva, Chris Hubbard and BJ Finney can maximize the "next man up" mantra.

Regarding Haley.. how true. If only Haley just attacked the weak points of defensive concepts like the Wide 9, there is no question that, despite a bad game, Pittsburgh may have ended up winning given Le'Veon's yards on fewer than 15 carries..

... on that note.. given the fact that gap containment of the B and C gaps is not only the Wide 9's paradigm of a weakness but Le'Veon Bell's strengths as a runner.., it is quite ambiguous to see Haley abandon the run game early outside that trick play.

Yup, even without the injuries adding up on Ben, I figured next year is the year to draft a QB, if a suitable one is present. I usually don't spend any time watching QB's in the draft but will in this one.

I would not personally if I were you. DeShone Kizer is currently your best bet but will be long gone after the fact.

Mitch Trubisky and Luke Falk are also quarterbacks you should check out.

We've faced some formidable defensive fronts. Washington, Jets, Dolphins and KC have very good fronts. We usually can't handle them because we don't have any road graders. Just finesse style guards and tackles.

Yes they may! Why wasn't he given the chance against NE? I created a thread last year questioning why the Landry Jones experiment hasn't ended. Was ridiculed for my thinking. I personally have seen enough of Landry Jones. That ship has sailed. It's time for the Steelers to aquire Ben's replacement.
When a QB can't protect themselves, its time. It's not about arm strength although it is important, but Favre, Kelly, Marino, Warner all still had the arm to get it done. They just couldn't protect themselves anymore. You will continue to see this played out right before your eyes.

Totally disagree. A franchise QB can have a 15 year career with one franchise, and will generally keep that franchise relevant for that entire span of time. The players around that QB will come and go, but the franchise QB provides a cornerstone around which to build for the long-run. Occasionally a team built around defense will win it all (see Denver last year), but usually the champions have a franchise QB that's the cornerstone of the franchise. The defense-centric team relies on having a handful of star defenders, and will inevitably lose many of them to free agency after a very brief run as a top-tier unit. Unless they draft extremely well on a consistent basis and replace stars with stars, they fall off pretty quickly. It will be curious to see how Denver fares over the course of the season with a defense-centric identity and a new QB with a first round QB waiting in the wings. My guess is that they'll struggle to compete for the division this year, even though Siemien is probably no worse now than Manning was last season. The handful of defensive losses in the offseason have already started their defense on a downward track. That's why Elway is trying hard to replace the franchise QB as a cornerstone to build around by trading up for Lynch. He understands that the QB is key to being a top team over an extended period of time.

Of course you do have to build a good team around that QB to avoid ending up like the Chargers, but having that QB is at least half the battle.

I don't remember the thread, but I find it hard to believe given the amount of anti-Landry sentiment there is around here.

It's like the times that people post "why does Tomlin never get criticised?", when it's a fairly standard practice around here.

Mettenberger and Jones are in the same practices, showing the same drills to the same coaches. Maybe Mettenberger has better intangibles in a real game situation. Maybe he comes in late in the game and surprises us all, like Jones did when he took over from Vick. For now, it's not really inconceivable that the coaches would stick to the depth chart they've structured around their knowledge of the team.

In terms of the OP: it would always be good to pick up potential future QBs. But I fully expect the same charges people are levelling at Jones to be levelled at anyone who gets put in instead of Ben, the first time they show any remote sign of weakness.

Has there ever been a QB criticized as much as jones, based on two game starts and who has only attempted 55 passes in live game action in 4 years, fans seem to think he should be judged against ben and backups with years of experience, he needs game time experience before he can be productive at a top level, 55 passes in real game time isnt going to be a measuring stick to determine if he is going to be a successful pro QB or not, getting these starts till ben gets back will be the determining factor on whether we see improvement from him in game to game action or not, I happen to think he isnt as bad as you all think he is despite his 2 game start 1-1 record which isnt bad considering his limited game experience....

He's thrown 55 passes in season scheduled game action and youve seen enough of him, I dont think you'll be getting any calls to be a quarterback scout any time soon......

No....I don't think so....It's time to get a good backup.....anyone you draft today...will be up for FA about the same time Ben is getting ready to call it a career.

That being said...if you feel "THE GUY" is there...you should take him.

Myself....I really liked Cardale Jones this year....Very Ben like...and would have been a good understudy.......That being said...I would make a run at EJ Manual next season....He has been replaced as the starter...and Cardale is in the wings as the next back up.

Haley's plays don't take too long to develop at all. Haley calls a play and Ben tries to run the play, but if it isn't there, Ben looks elsewhere. If you have both WR's running a hero, it is gonna take a second to see which one gets separation, and if neither shakes loose, Ben has to look for the TE or dump off to a RB.

You can't question Haley at all, because Haley calls the play, Ben can audible or choose the wrong target in his progression. The safetys probably have more influence than Haley. lol

I don't know who or if the Steelers will draft Ben's heir apparent. But I hope their
choice is sooner rather than later.

Sorry to pick on your post, but it reminded me of the discussion on back-up QBs, about why Pittsburgh isn't doing as well as the Patriots or the Cowboys.

Considering that this team still has talent/depth problems at OLB, TE and CB (although more experience for the young players might take the TEs and CBs off the emergency list in a year or two), spending more picks on QBs probably would have made the situation worse. As long as Ben is around and Jones can become an adequate back-up (not starter), I'd like to see the overall team talent improve before using picks on QBs.

The skins, boys, and pats have gotten lucky, but they've also spent a lot of (high) picks in order to be lucky.
As fans, we tend to ignore their failures when they finally get a success.

In the last 12 years, these are the draft picks spent on QB:
Steelers: a 4th (Jones), and two 5ths (Dixon, Jacobs)
Cowboys: a 3rd (McGee), and two 4ths (Prescott, Stanback)
Patriots: a 2nd (Garoppolo), three 3rds (Brissett, Mallett, O'Connell), and two 7ths (Robinson, Cassel)
Washington: two 1sts (Griffin, Campbell), a 3rd (Cousins), and three 6ths (Sudfeld, Brennan, Palmer)

Can you imagine if the Steelers spent a 3rd round pick on a QB (Mallet) who contributed nothing, and was traded 2 years later for a 7th round pick? A lot of fans would be irate, wondering why the team doesn't do things like the Patriots...

Yes I have, I take the eyeball test, that's all I need. I hope Landry wins all the games he plays for the rest of his Steeler career. Then the Steelers aquire a QB and they unload Landry Jones.
