the traditional form of it as in blitzburgh as the article states. this defense we play a lot of now is still based off of it. it's just a lot more versatile in it's usage of the OLB's. more coverage mix ups with them instead of 90% rush the passer. i believe a lot of the newer usage will be determined by hargraves and his quickness ability to get to the qb than what we saw from say an older casey hampton. in casey's early years he had such a quickness into the backfield that more resources had to be used to deter that. his game morphed into a push pass rush after that that was less effective but we had better outside rushers then. i'm not saying it will become the old 3-4 as we knew it again but it could become another tool in it's usage.

I am not sure schemes become obsolete. Teams mix it up on offense and defense. As offenses have evolved so have defenses depending on situations.

I like the versatility of our olb's, but I would love at least one olb on our roster who plays more like a rush 4-3 de... Like Suggs or Von Miller.

That type of OLB they need to try and find in the 2017 draft.

Is the 3-4 obsolete or is our 3-4 obsolete?

It's ours. Reason being is the parts. We just don't have the parts/players to build and sustain a viable 3-4 defense.

If you have 3 DL that can occupy 5 OL you create an advantage. Then having 2 fast strong athletic OLB that can create constant pressure on the QB or drop into coverage or defend the run.

We just don't have these components so yes our 3-4 is obsolete.
