It will be interesting to see if snap counts and situational packages begin to see more changes. Artie Burns snap count is going to increase, and with Gilbert getting up to speed, he may see some snaps too.

    What we've seen so far:

    34 package
    CB: Cockrell and Gay
    S: Mitchell and Golden

    Nickel (1st/2nd down)
    CBs: Cockrell and Gay
    NB: Davis
    S: Mitchell and Golden

    Nickel (A) 3rd down
    CBs: Cockrell and Burns
    NB: Gay
    S: Mitchell and Golden

    Nickel (B) 3rd down
    CBs: Gay and Burns
    NB: Davis
    S: Mitchell and Golden

    Dime
    CB: Cockrell and Burns
    NB: Gay
    MB: Golden
    S: Mitchell and Davis

it's good to have shazier mixed in coverage to help these scenarios out. his range helps so much in these db's being able to disguise what they do. as far as working in gilbert and burns more, i'm not totally against it but being only week 3 i'd like to see these same groups staying and playing together to get even more familiar with each other. if it was still dick lebeau as DC and gilbert coming from hortans defense he could be up to speed quicker, but butler has changed a lot up since then. not totally but enough. there should be some similarities though which should help quicken his grasp. big change from last year in talent to get on the field. you have to love that. a good problem to have.

I see alot of carry over and similarities between a Butler and Lebeau defense.. The bend don't break seems to be remarkably similar but I totally agree our personnel is different. some of the things Butler is doing now could not be accomplished with last years defense

I don't have the all-22... In fact I've watched each game only once, usually I go back and re watch trying to break it down some.

Pittsburgh is still a 3-4 basically but probably run some sort of sub-package 60-80% of the time depending on situational football. Pittsburgh also likes the Big Nickel more with Butler than with LeBeau which is why I believe they drafted Davis.

My question to you is with Dupree out how is that effecting our coverages in the secondary? Has there been many Big Nickel sub-packages at this point?

I plan on dissecting the 1st 3 games tomorrow.

i was talking more about when horton was here with DL and the effect on gibert playing under horton for the browns. even after horton left DL was using some of these packages more and more and butler has just built on those.

The way I see it is bend but don't break is the only similarities between LeBeau and Butlers defense. Butler doesn't have the OLB studs DL had and that forces a slight shift in DL philosophy and replacing the great Troy also creates issues. Mitchell has done well ( when healthy ) replacing Clark. Golden is playing some good football, not like Troy but he is doing his job well imho. Our corners aren't bump and run press cover but they are pressing more than DL would have them do. This is why they drafted Burns and traded for Gilbert IMHO so they can eventually shift towards more press coverage.

The way the NFL offenses have evolved over the last 5 years really embracing pass attacks has dictated out need on defense to evolve , I Loved LeBeau but honestly he was a creative genius but was not very flexible when things started changing.
