I am more impressed at the fact that Pittsburgh has held teams to under 20 points.

We are not talking about average offensive teams either... but top flight ones. In addition.. the lack of a pass rush makes this analysis the most suprising of it all. Teams usually do well when they get to the quarterback. While Pittsburgh has generated pressure.. it has not manufactured into sacks. Even so.. when Bud Dupree and knocks off some of that rust in addition to the further development of Sean Davis, Artie Burns and Robert Golden....

    Watch out

The defense has steadily been improving over the last few years. People aren't a fan of the bend but don't break defense but it's working and once Burns and Davis are up to speed, you should see the yardage against drop down.

The funny thing about the yardage, is that when it was on the opposite side of the ball, and the Steelers offense was amongst the tops in yardage gained, it was dismissed by Arians detractors as useless but when the defense gives up the yardage, it's critical ;)

I wouldn't call the Redskins offense "top flight." They are average. Bengals do have a good offense, though.

I would consider the 'Skins a top flight one. Jordan Reed is the least of a teams worries. It is just that Cousins needs to be more accurate. If anything, if he was... Washington beats the Cowboys.

As fans we like to see blitzburgh rack up those sacks, while this new version defense is getting the job done so far in two games we feel like this is a soft defense and if it keeps playing like it is we will still miss the smash mouth defenses that we were known for in the past..........

if we catch those interceptions the high powered bungirls offense doesn't even make it close. i don't care if we don't have a tough label given our defense. win games and they can call us fluffburgh if they want. put a 7th and 8th big shinney football in the case and they can call them winners.

A article on Depot and Coach T talks about giving up way to many yards on 1st. and 2nd. down and we must get better at it ...He knows if you keeping giving 3rd. and shorts Teams will start converting them...If we keep giving up redzone chances Teams will start converting them...

The Defense has improved from last year, but they are a work in progress. The "bend, but don't break" defense is fine against average and below average QBs, but will be exposed against the better QBs in the league.

While they played a couple of good offenses what worries me is when they play the top offenses in the league. The bend don't break seems to be working on the scoreboard...I know ,I know that's all that matters but my concern is the bend but don't break gives up field position too easily and allows sustained drives that keeps our O which is our strength off the field and with less opportunities....The better offenses will find ways to be more effective in the RedZone then we are allowing right now...

At some point were gonna have to get more pressure along with actual sacks and TOs.... More three and outs would certainly help. The optimistic side of me says that we are playing a little possum until our young secondary gets up to speed...the pessimist in me says that we need to draft OLB in every round next season....in all I like where the D is at this point and I'm hoping we ain't seen nothing yet..

Good point at the end. It was all "who cares if we move the ball if we can't score!"

Now it's all "who cares if they don't score, they move the ball too much!" Lol

again, if they catch those interceptions that were in they're hands we look a lot better on this defense, so we are in the right spots and giving up few points and getting off the field on 3rd down and stopping the run. all points to a better defense. yes they are young and a work in progress but they are playing well. the bengirls offense is quite good so bringing up these phantom flawless qb's that other teams have is pointless. it is still a team game and the qb's will never win it alone. pressure can cause as many turnovers as sacks do. it's a matter of keeping any qb off balance and out of their comfort zone. it doesn't matter how it happens.

If I understand what I've heard correctly, as Burns gets more playing time they will be gradually putting him into more press man sets. This will decrease the amount of zone cushion allowed and hopefully those short underneath routes we're willingly giving up now will go with it.

The underneath stuff is still concerning. The Bengals missed quite a few short passes that were open. Dump-offs and misdirection can still cause our D fits.

The D will have to step up sooner or later. The offense will do their typical egg-lay by scoring under 20 points and the D will have to bail them out. My blood pressure and overall mental state will take a beating.

Washington is not a top flight offence by any means. There's talk of cousins losing his job because the team is turning on him.

Cincinnati is better but they didn't have Eifert and it was pouring out, which makes for sloppy football.

I'm not writing the defence off, but we need to see a lot more before I'll be convinced the defence has any other teams worried

I'm not sold on our defense yet. I'm seeing some things that look good and I'm seeing things that look concerning. We did play a weak redskin offense and a decent Bengal offense that was with out their TE and it was raining. Our offense which people are saying is the best in the league was held to 24 points on sunday. So it was not a good day for scoring. I'm not sold on our defense until we can shut down a really good offense which we might not see until the Patriots game. I want to see us dominate a team with our defense...that's what good defenses do against bad to average offenses.

I don't know what to think of the Chiefs yet either.... I think they are a good team that's not playing their best right now... by the time we play them they may be the best team in the AFC. Kind of like last year when we played them. They didn't lose a game after beating us.

Well I think we went into the chiefs game thinking we had a cakewalk against a 1-5 team that had lost 5 in a row, we made that terrible mistake of taking them lightly based on their record, a bad mistake we have made too many times before....

Contrary to the title of the op, the CBS article isn't suggesting anyone should fear our defense. The article is suggesting that since our defense has gotten better coupled with a good offense, teams should be scared of us as s legitimate AFC contender.

Nobody should fear our defense. But we certainly are a contender.
