The Pats do it with Brady a bunch....The Panthers also do it with Cam..Seattle did it with Wilson and Lynch a few years back..Atlanta did it with Julio ...Again if your D is good enough the smart call is to protect your key guys and give the bu's real experience....Will it happen this year ?probably not , but I would love to see it .....

It's not playing scared it's playing smart...The fresher your studs are in the post season the better they will be ....The more experience the bu's get the more game ready they will be if needed ....Something I guess the number guys don't like ????

    First thing: Great post.
I have a question for you if you're comfortable answering.
From your posts I've read you really seem to have a good grasp on the X's and O's of the game.
Do you have a background in football?

No the Pats don't do it with Brady a bunch.

In 2012 Ryan Mallett played 24 snaps in 4 games, half of those snaps were taking a knee.

In 2013 tom Brady played 100% of the offensive snaps

In 2014 Garrapolo played 67 snaps, but the majority of those snaps came in week 1 when they got blown out and Brady was pulled and playing most of a meaningless week 17 game (along with 3 kneel out games)

In 2015 Garappolo played a whopping 13 snaps, again this was 4 games of kneel outs, and a week 17 meaningless game of a mop up.

In no way does this reflect what you are talking about.

Cam played all but 25 snaps. Anderson played in 3 kneel out games.

These are not scenarios where the opponent has time to come back. It's scenarios where the opponent has no timeouts and you can take 2 minutes off the clock without any problem.

i also have to add these guys make incentive money for certain goals reached during the year and don't like their playing time cut short. that cuts into their contracts money.

OK. I want to apologize for turning this discussion negative. It was not my intention. I was ecstatic with the way the O played and AB's second touchdown was as pure as it gets. How many hours of work does it take for BB and AB to be that in sync? My disappointment was the lack of pass rush and the missed tackles on the D. I should have reserved that commentary for a "What's wrong with our D" thread.

Yeah, but like some people were saying, you keep The Red faces from getting the big play, and you beat them. Solid defensive game plan, and as the defense tightens up their tackling, they will get better.

Against the lowly Redskins... A real QB would exploit this bend don't break theory. Guess it's a good thing they are playing an average QB this week in Dalton. Need more push up front and not a patty cake Jarvis Jones. Harrison needs to pass rush more. Heyward was quite concerned after the game with lack of pass rush and pressure. I agree. Got the win but this Defense needs to get better. I have faith they will...

They will game plan different for different types of quarterbacks and offenses.

If you have faith that they'll get better then what are you complaining about?

I've seen good leads disappear quickly over the years. Momentum shifts can happen quickly.

I think your assessment of having "good enough" next guys up is a bit off considering the salary capp, a general lack of quality backups & sometimes starters league wide, and the fact that many of the quality backups want an opportunity to start(make more money) once they hit FA. The Steelers or other teams would have to be perfect in the draft, FA, and the stars would have to align perfectly to have the roster you expect. I believe the days of stockpiling quality players up and down rosters died with FA and the salary capp.

Sometimes teams are fortunate to have quality depth at certain positions. To have quality depth on an entire roster is extremely difficult in today's NFL.

I agree with you can't stock it from top to bottom , but key bu's would be nice ...WR,RB,QB,CB,FS... I consider these as key spots WR and RB check QB probably not CB,FS nope ....So I think we are about half way there ...

Complaining? Not. Just observing. And stating a fact. So if they would have gotten shelled by Cousins would you feel different? You think that the lack of pass rush was planned? I don't think so. That's what I have faith in. That they will straighten out the pass rush situation hopefully. I don't wear rose colored glasses.

If cousins would have shredded us would I have been mad? Yeah I would've been. But this obviously was the right defense to play for this particular opponent. A lot of zone coverage and it Worked.
No we didn't get a ton of pressure with our front four. We also didn't seem like we blitzed that much.
I'm sure we'll adjust the game plan based on the opponents strengths.

As far as this Rose colored glasses nonsense, don't throw insults or you might get some back. Just sayin'

Their game plan on defense was to force cousins to throw under neath and cover deep, that did work most of the time, but their 4 man rush was pretty pitiful, probably will see blitzes in this game, the jets sacked dalton 7 times and that kept him to one TD for the game, 1 TD on the ground and 3 field goals but the jets pressure with those 7 sacks stopped daltons passing game inside the twenty....

Ya know I think if we were fans of ANY other team we probably would have no issues with this new scheme at all. I just think it's more because as STEELERS fans we are just "conditioned" to seeing a defense where linebacker, safeties, ends, and corners just relentlessly attack the qb and spend more time in the backfield than they do downfield. I just think we don't know how to adjust to this new scheme that we're seeing. For what it's worth, I've noticed Revis has been lit up twice so far this year and he loves to play that tight press man. But as soon as he doesn't jam his guy within 5 they are pretty much waving bye byte to him. Maybe the only thing that's gonna get Steelers fans to get behind this new scheme would be for NASA to develop the technology to allow us to see "what might have been" if we had gotten our way. Sorta like It's A Wonderful Life or something. Then maybe we'd all stop whining about it. I personally would really like for that to happen because I readily admit that I've complained about the lack of pressure forever now. I've just always written it off as more of a problem with lack of talent as opposed to people figuring out Dick's schemes. I don't know if there's any fanbase in football that thinks as much about the "good ole days" as ours honestly.

Their plan was to only rush 3-4, they didn't want to do a lot of blitzing. Butler called it tackle the catch they didn't mind giving up those short completions, keep everything in front of them don't give up the big play.

i totally think it was planned. they know what they have in the secondary. I loved seeing them adjust to make up for the secondary deficiencies.

i'm not sure cam's ankle was 100% either last week. as it heals the pressure should get somewhat better from him as well which in turn will help tuitt too. hargraves first game action is a factor too. as it's early in the season and we have a lot of new parts in the secondary, it just wasn't time to leave them on their own so to speak. i'm not sure they are deficient back there just new in playing together. it's like an O-line almost, it takes time together. sure opponents and game plans make a difference but so does time together. cockrell full time, hargraves, golden full time, davis as the nickle, that's a big chunk of difference on defense that has to gel together. missing dupree doesn't help either.

    We have something special ---

We have a Kicker for the now and future!!!

Offense-- without Bryant , Bell, Wheaton Miller or Nix and we moved the ball and scored against a team that's better than many of you think.

Defense--- bend but didn't break. Tightened up in the red zone. Yes it's not on the same level as the offense but look at the youth , speed and know they will improve every game.

Cousins would have ate us up if we would have blitzed heavy and I believe that is what the Redskins game planned for. Brilliant move Butler!!! We do have to increase QB pressure and we will.

Sitting our starters??!? Only if we're winning 45 - 3 after the 2 min warning in the 4th Qtr.

Cam is a stud for even being out there really. I've heard that injury he has is super painful.

This. I'm kind of struggling with the idea that we should have played Cousins as though he were Dalton.

That said, of course certain QBs will pick our D apart. They aren't a shut-down unit. In those cases, the offense needs to step up. In other cases, the D just needs to do what it has to do to keep the other team quiet.
