If he starts to make plays as expected, he will move up.

Er, on the outside. I haven't even looked at the depth chart but I imagine its something like Markus Wheaton and AB first team on the outside, Sammie Coates and DHB backing them up respectively and Eli Rogers and who-the-hell ever 3rd string as outside WRs. In other words, barring an injury, no Rogers lined up against the other teams best corners.

But uhh, opening drive if the Steelers come out in a 3WR 1TE 1RB set, which is pretty standard, Rogers is the third WR on the field. Thats considered a start if the opening play personnel is that. Idk how deep this debate has gone and how bad its been since I haven't lurked the forums for a while having just finished an 8 day work stretch but I think its pretty undebatable that, barring injury, Eli will be getting snaps. BB himself has pimped him out and targeted him enough to show thats the case.

If the real issue here is whether PWP discovered Eli then, I mean, come on. Really? All you gotta do is stay on top of all the training camp news to accurately (within an reasonable degree of doubt) pick out potential boom or busts for the Steelers. It's not hard or much of a bragging point. When you place 100 bets you're gonna get pay offs. Anyone who was paying attention knew that Mike Wallace was a one trick pony and AB was something special in the making. This whole thing seems silly but maybe its because I'm coming in late when the fire has died down.

Guess I don't need to bother since you already pointed out the obvious -- that any simpleton could comprehend (had they paid any modicum of attention whatsoever to what the coaching staff was saying about personnel in camp) that they LOVE Eli in the slot and he'll be seeing plenty of the field.

“We’ll see when we get to the games,” Todd Haley said, “but everything we’ve seen to this point, we haven’t had a slot guy like him since I’ve been here. It hasn’t been close.” - Todd Haley (he's our offensive coordinator)

Oh, and then they backed that up by putting him on the field for like 11 of the first 12 offensive plays at New Orleans.

"Eli Rogers is Antonio Brown's backup's backup, according to the Pittsburgh Steelers' depth chart. But on the field this preseason, where the Steelers tend to field more than two receivers at a time, Rogers has been the team's first-choice slot receiver."

And there's that other thing about the depth chart where, for receivers, they list the depth chart for the X's and Z's (flankers and split ends) but not the Y's (slot guys). To read the depth chart and think Eli will not see the field because he's listed as the third split end is rather dim.

I'm not sure why this is even a 'debate.' I mean, who cares who's right and wrong on this subject? The dude is our primary slot guy when we put packages on the field that involve a slot guy. He's the #1 slot guy if you wanna put that on a depth chart. It is what it is and I don't understand why that bothers some people. Embrace it. Dude is a "prototypical" (Haley's term for him) slot guy.

People if you are relatively new to the board please take it easy. No need to get carpal tunnel writing out detailed responses to this thread, already been done. This is a running gag on the board like Pimply Dan. PWP makes huge predictions about his yearly man crush normally DHB this case Eli Rogers and we tease him throughout the year. On slow days we actually discuss it with him but mostly just jokes.

Well there you have it. I am relatively new so I won't nudge in like I'm familiar with the nuances of the inside jokes here. Idk the tone of some of the posts seems like there is some seriousness behind some of it. So its at least useful to explain how on a depth chart a guy can be a 3rd string WR and start in the slot.

For those of us who mistakingly looked at this as a serious flame war, the particulars should clear it up. Eli will be getting the ball. DHB isn't much but Rogers is showing like he could be pretty much a stud so hey, I'll give PWP a nod.

There is a serious lengthy thread with some great discussion about it, what role Rogers will play and terminology and what x or y or Z recever he will be. This however is Glenn getting a jab in at PWP for his going 100 mpH into the wall with his thoughts.

Starter in the slot? is that the same as saying starter at tackle eligible?

    2 Wheaton
    3 DHB
    4 Coates
    5 Rogers

Didn't look at the depth chart but that's what I'm assuming it is (regardless of inside/outside). Doesn't Tomlin rarely ever start someone over somebody else with more experience? At least that's how it is with the LBs

My man crush this year was Grave Digger so I'm pretty happy to see he made an impact and really ticked that he might be hurt. I was hoping to see him and Tuitt and Heyward causing a ruckus and now I might have to wait a lot longer.

For what it is worth, the depth chart only lists 2 WR positions and that would be the wide guys. If they listed a third receiver position for the slot, Rogers may very well be first. And we will play a lot of slot.

Not trying to make anyone's head any bigger....

FWIW, I think Rogers finished 3rd amongst WRs/TEs in receptions.

And if we start the game in a double TE set then David Johnson would be a starter.

Exactly. I'm not anointing Rofers as a starter. Just suggesting that contrary to where the depth chart makes him look to be #5, he may be #3.

I'd imagine he gets a fair # of snaps in the slot, but I doubt he starts all 16 games as PWP has stated.

It wouldn't surprise me if he's 2nd. We should use him like the Pats use Edelman.
