No interviews but the biggest knock on him was he showed up late for meetings and just acted immature, I think our locker room can change his attitude or maybe Harrison will grab him by the throat and scare the hell out of him.....

I wonder where AV is when it comes to the leadership ladder so to speak. Like I'm sure it would be his natural instinct to try and be a big voice in the room. He would almost have to be. We really do have some great leaders on this team. Leaders that are more than just mouth their play and work ethic show it also.

If Gilbert is a malcontent, I have no hope our locker room can change him, there's nothing special about it and it hasn't kept Bell and Bryant in line.

My hope is that Gilbert wasn't coached properly and didn't receive much of a chance.

He has the tools, let's see what our coaches can do with him.

Winning cures all, if Gilbert wants to have a NFL career he better get it together.

There's a new article on Steelers Depot with some quotes from Gilbert. He said Steelers practice was a whole new level, and that he's grateful to be here. Said that the team has quality leaders on both sides of the ball who know what it takes to win a championship. Just words, but at least they're the right words.

Found this on Steelers home page.
Steelers' CB Justin Gilbert got to work with his new team on Monday.
For an NFL player, learning you were traded can come as a big surprise, and sometimes not a pleasant surprise.

But for cornerback Justin Gilbert[IMG], getting traded from the Browns to the Steelers on Saturday is a welcome change for the former first-round pick.

“I was a little bit surprised,” said Gilbert. “I was more happy and shocked at the same time. I am just excited for this new opportunity, fresh opportunity, with these guys. Everybody has welcomed me with open arms and I am just ready to get to work.

“Words can’t even explain how excited I am right now. I am just grateful.”

Gilbert got to work with his new teammates on Monday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex as they prepare to take on the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football on Sept. 12. And he immediately liked the vibe from his new team.

“It’s a lot different,” said Gilbert. “It’s a little more laid back. Everybody here knows what this team is capable of. At the same time when we hit the practice field it was a whole different level. I am excited for that every day.

“Being around the guys in this locker room, these guys know what it takes to win a championship. You have quality leaders on offense and defense. I’m just coming in looking up to those guys and following their lead for now.”

Gilbert was selected by the Browns with the eighth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. He played in 23 games with two starts in Cleveland, and accounted for 29 tackles, nine passes defensed, and a 23-yard interception for a touchdown. He had some issues while with the Browns, but said he has grown up a lot and is just ready to move forward.

“All I know is what I can do and what I am going to do for this franchise,” said Gilbert. “I want to go out and prove it every day. I don’t want to talk about it so much, just show it with my actions on the field and my play. I just want to continue to be consistent as I have been in the past year. Continue to show I am here every day to work and show consistency.

“Just growing up off of the field. There are a lot of things that can distract you when you come in, but after a year in the league and not getting done what I wanted to get done in my first season, it’s changed me and made me a new man.”

Here's a c/p of the transcript from a group media interview earlier.

When did you find out you were coming to Pittsburgh?
Two days ago, found out Saturday. My agents called. Then, I went up to the facility in Cleveland and talked to the head coach, just talked about it a little bit.

Re: On if he was surprised:
A little bit surprised. I was happy and shocked at the same time, but I’m just excited for this new and fresh opportunity with these guys. Everybody has welcomed me with open arms. I’m just ready to get to work.

Re: On his relationship with the Steelers before he was drafted:
It was pretty good. Coach and the GM came down to visit me in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and talked to me before my pro day. We talked a little bit and created a good little conversation amongst ourselves. It was pretty good.

Re: On if this is a fresh start:
    Yeah, most definitely.

Did you feel you needed one?
It’s not bad to have one. I wouldn’t say I needed one, but it’s good to have one.

Re: On what he needs to prove, considering you were late for meetings things like that:
Just to continue to be consistent, as I’ve been in the last couple years, or the past year. Continue to show that I’m here every day to work, and just show consistency.

Re: On how excited are you?
Words can’t even explain how excited I am right now. I’m just grateful.

Re: On his experience kick returning:
I did that majority of the time last year, so it’s nothing new to me.

Re: What about being here that can help your career as a cornerback?
Being around just most of the guys in this locker room. These guys know what it takes to win a championship. And you got quality leaders on offense and defense, so just coming in and looking up to those guys and following their lead for now.

Considering what Steelers have represented over the years, do you feel this can be a legitimate fresh start for you?
Most definitely, and I expect it to be nothing less.

Last year they made a similar move. What does it say about what they still think you can do? And has that been mentioned that they want a different result this time?
I haven't really heard anything about last year. All I know is what I can do and what I'm going to do for this franchise and just going out proving it every day and just not really wanting to talk about it so much but just showing it with my actions on the field and my play.

Your struggles as a rookie are documented. How have you improved your professionalism?
Just growing up off of the field. There are a lot of things that can distract you when you come in fresh out of college but after a year in the league and not getting done what I wanted to get done in my first season, it's kind of changed me and made me a new man for sure.

    How different is this environment?
Oh, it's a lot different. It's a little bit more laid back I would say but I think everybody here knows what this team is capable of. And at the same time like when we hit the practice field, it was a whole different level. I'm excited for that every day.

    What were the distractions?
Personal. It's now what I want to talk about.

    What went wrong in Cleveland?
It was nothing major. Just a lack of consistency.

How much does playing time matter?
I just want to finish out the year here and make it to the playofs and get to the Super Bowl. That will take place down the road. If I'm playing good, I'll be out there. If I'm not, then I probably won't. So hopefully I'll be out there.

Were the expectations of being a top 10 pick weight you down?
    No. No, not really. No.

What were the adjustments from college to pro that you may have stuggled with initially?
Nah, not really, it's just every single week there are guys who are elite athletes. You would get that sometimes in college. Just got to prepare yourself like a pro every week and study film like a pro.

Did they ask about return game?
We haven't practiced that yet but I'm sure we will in a couple of days, so I wouldn't know.

On cramming for new defense and how long will it take?
I think it'll just take a couple of days to get the flow of it. Today was a decent first day for me. I expect the next couple of days to be even better.

Were you surprised traded for sixth-round pick?
It is what it is. No real need to comment on that. I'm here now. It is what it is.

What's your familiarity with the scheme? And how will it work for you?
I think it's going to work out good. I like it. I like it so far.

What do you like about it?
It allows corners to make plays, the DBs to make plays.

I'm not going to speculate on how Boykin felt in Philly during the Chip Kelly regime but for Gilbert to go from the Browns to the Steelers has got to be like winning the lotto. I hope he takes it to heart I really do.

From the few interviews I've seen... It seems he just got by on athleticism in college and is slow to learn techniques that help the pros succeed.

While he does seem, uhh, slightly dim. I guess is the word. He doesnt seem all that more dim than other athletes at the pro level. His interview was very good and very telling IMO. He speaks well enough, seems to have somewhat of a head on his shoulders, doesnt seem to be a bad egg. He also seemed genuine in saying that coming out of college into big money distracted him, but I think the atmosphere in Cleveland is what perpetuated that into being a him becoming a "bust."

I don't think he's shown that he's a bust yet. He's in a completely new program. I think he should be looked at like a rookie and should have final judgement after two seasons in the burgh.

Cleveland seems to be where talent goes to die, thats my reasoning.

The Browns are doing an entire overhaul of their personnel. Did you hear/read they signed 14 of their rookies.. Unprecendented

Not trying to be a pessimist about this signing, because Gilbert has the physical tools, but one name keeps coming back to me when thinking about this trade....Joe Haden. Haden's been with the brownies longer than Gilbert and has gone thru the same coaching changes and losing culture, yet he is a top flight NFL CB. Gilbert had a great example to follow at the same position no less, yet it seems he did not have that drive.

I realize players come into the league with different maturity levels, so I'm hoping Gilbert's development on the mental aspects catch up to his physical skills. We are starving for some top notch CB consistency so I'll have to step back from the former first rounder hype a little and watch this one develop. I really do hope the change of scenery provides a spark for him to take his profession to the next level.

Like some, I am more excited about his KR ability at the onset rather than his play at CB, as KRs are mostly physical skills. But I think he was brought here as both a CB and KR.

It is just the way the game is going ...Teams are not running as much as they used to and the refs will flag most big hits as such we have to start playing the ball more and let the front guys worry about the run more ..

Well, I definitely am not saying he isn't bright, my point is he hasn't been applying himself to learning his craft.

That includes not only learning his position, but also by being a professional by showing up to meetings on time.

I guess a concern I have is we have been bringing in quite a few guys lately that need to be "coached up". Raw athletes that might not be "football junkies". I'd take the the football player with the drive to win over guys who look good running around with pads on.

I think it is smug to say... "oh our locker room is strong enough we can bring in anybody and turn them around." That can easily come back and bite you when thing aren't going well.

    This!!

Playing the Bucs he got smoked, embarrassed by WR Evans, who runs a 4.5. Gilbert and his tools, 4.3 speed, has terrible technique and it shows.

This and his very poor attitude and professionalism is why he was discarded by the Browns .

We have to be mindful of this and temper our expectations. He is a bust, plain and simple.

He now is saying all the right things so hopefully he's humbled a bit and maturing. He had Haden as a mentor and learned squat. He must want it so hopefully he now does but can we teach him? Is Lake the right DB coach to reach him? Many here question Lakes ability because of his many DBs who has failed to develop. Was it them or him ?

Well, he now has someone " with all the tools" so failure this time is not an option.

Personally I'm optimistically excited about what could be. What if Burns develops into what he was drafted to be and Gilbert becomes all he could be.

Agree. When I watch tape of corner prospects, the vast majority have tackling issues. I think Gilbert came out of school as a better tackler than both Eli Apple and W Jax 3. I haven't seen much of him at Cleveland, but unless he's regressed I don't think he's un-fixable in that area.
