The year he was drafted he was coming off an ACL injury.
He did have issues his Freshman year at Georgia. Was kicked off the team and he went and won a JUCO national championship. Transferred to LSU and went 19-6 in 2 years. Only LSU QB to throw for 2,500yds in back to back seasons. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/profiles/zach-mettenberger?id=2543605

I was a fan of his coming out of college. (As a project)
I don't know if he is too damaged after being thrown to the wolves to early to learn.
He is definitely landing in a good situation here. Hoping that he develops well and pushes L. Jones.

I dont see a situation for him here, he wont play this week and other than the practice team he wont get any game action this year, and he let a rookie UDFA who only played 1 full season at ASU beat him out in camp seems like a pretty good indication that he doesn't have any potential at all to me....

    Not playing tonight.

Doubtful he would outperform anybody in current form.

Why has Gradkowski even been consideration and deemed acceptable?

And Landry Jones threw more picks than tds last year. Has Mettenberger ever thrown four picks in one half of football? That's hard to do.

I keep seeing this stated as fact. It has not yet been shown to be true and I think it lacks an understanding of NFL operations.

First, teams often let guys go in first cuts who they know are not going to make the team. It happens all the time. It gives the player an opportunity to find another team and allows the team to not risk having them on IR all year or having to do a settlement.

Second, at this point we don't know that SDI going to carry 3 guys. If they don't we don't k ow if he got beat or just was an early cut.

Lastly, sometimes guys just need to be in the right system and/or be given time to develop. Troy Aikman was 0-16. Was he THAT bad or just playing on what was at the time a really bad team. Hmmm.

He's a prototypical QB, big, strong arm, can make every throw. I'm not too concerned what he did on a team with pretty much no talent. It would be different if he were on a team like the Steelers and went 0-10. I'm definitely not concerned what a dysfunctional organization like SD did.

I know when I watch this guy, he generally looks pretty good but ends up throwing a crucial interception. Improve his decision making, surround him with talent, this is a guy I wouldn't feel like the season is over if Ben went down for any length of time.

He was also teammates with OBJ and Jarvis Landry at LSU.

Jarvis Landry sounds like a hybrid monster created to send some members of this board explode with frustration.

Good question. There is an expectation that if we sign a decent veteran back up they will automatically serve the role that Batch did. Clearly not the case with Gradkowski.

A lot of good qb's only played one full season in college. I watch a lot of Pac-12 football since their games are usually on late and Bercovici is a drop back passer in the style of Brees that was stuck in a read/option system in college. Square peg/round hole. It's why Brock Osweiler left school (also ASU) early. They made a coaching change, the new coach (Todd Graham -- former Pitt coach) brought in a read/option system, and Osweiler was advised to declare for the draft as the system wouldn't showcase his skill sets. Bercovici might be a pretty solid pro. Looking at his stats, 42 tds and 13 ints in a season and a half working out of a read/option and threw for over 3,800 yards last season behind a horrid o-line and no receivers.

I'm wondering now if we leaped too soon? Are there any rumors of veteran qbs getting cut? No , never mind , I think we did the right thing in picking up mettenberger and we probably got him for cheap

Actually ASU played a lot of spread last year:
    From Daily Bruin:
    Arizona State’s pass-heavy spread formation.

The unit, headlined by redshirt senior quarterback Mike Bercovici, ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in overall passing offense. This is an offense that likes to stretch the field, motioning players and using overload formations to take advantage of one-on-one matchups. The Sun Devils’ ground game has been weak this year, ranking 10th in the conference.

He's a better third option than an injured Grad or a healthy Renner. We got him for nothing.

The kid has some talent, but it just hasn't all come together yet. Maybe we can make something of him. Maybe not... But it's worth a try. We didn't have many other options for QB3.

Ken Whisenhunt drafted him, and coached him at Tenn for 2 years, now this year as charger OC he brought him into camp, he should know him better than anyone else, but he evidently saw the same flaws in his technique with no improvement and thats why he cut him last week:

Not sure where you got your stats (just Googled 'Bercovici' looking for anything and found an obscure article from a ucla message board, it seems). ASU finished 6th (not 10th) in rushing in real life: http://www.espn.com/college-football/conferences/statistics/team/_/stat/rushing/year/2015/id/9

They threw a lot out of necessity, if anything. They operated out of a read/option offense and Bercovici can't run.

They threw 534 times and ran 536 times last year. If running more times than throwing is "pass-heavy" then ucla's beat writer is absolutely clueless about this subject (or doesn't know what "pass-heavy" means).

Perhaps the ucla fan boy, on his blog, was referring to the previous season (2014) where Bercovici filled in for their injured starter and they aired it out a lot more (after he took over) because, again, he's anything but a read-option qb. Not sure when your inside scoop (from a ucla fan) about ASU was written. Perhaps he knows more about Josh Rosen than Mike Bercovici.

In conclusion, I'd take Mettenberger AND/OR Bercovici over Landry Jones.

Whiz isn't the GM, he isn't even the HC, he's not making decisions there. You are also talking about an organization that fired a 14-2 coach and has been pretty abysmal ever since. I don't put a lot of stock in their opinion.

Whiz did draft him and didn't want to draft Mariota, wanted to stick with Zach. Now they are both out of Tennessee.

Again, I like what I see when I watch him, thats what I will base my opinion on, not what other teams have done based on reasons we are not privy too.
