The Steelers treated the Saints game as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. The order of appearance of guys in that game will be the same vs. Washington.

So an undrafted rookie who has never played a snap in the NFL is going to push Wheaton to the outside, which in effect benches Coates, a guy they drafted to replace Bryant and who has a year under his belt? I don't see it.

Huge difference between preseason and regular season.

Even Bryant took half a season and the slot is more difficult. Eli will get some touches but his impact will come next season.

It looks to me like Eli will get a lot more snaps then you think.

His experience as a slot blanket WR is not only valuable in relation to our other WRs skills (keep AB on outside, Wheaton sucks in slot), but also in how we will need to shift routes from the TE position to the slot.

The steelers WANT Rogers to seize those routes, the 3rd preseason game made that clear.

I expect him to see a lot of snaps in 2nd and 3rd and 5ish type packages. I don't expect him to play on 1st down, or 3rd and long, or red zone type situations.

Coates is going to play of course, but as it stands now, I think Rogers is going to be get more snaps than him unless he shows he can't handle the job. Draft pedigree doesn't mean much if you're not getting it done and Coates hasn't looked particularly good. Besides, this isn't really Coates vs Rogers, it's about putting guys in the best position to succeed. Wheaton is better off outside and so is Coates. Rogers is better off in the slot.

I don't think we have to waste time trying to guess who gets more snaps if we agree that they will be role and package dependent.

Coates pathway to more snaps is through Wheaton. The more of the playbook Coates masters, the more snaps he'll get.

Eli has a more direct pathway to snaps, but is more limited in the types of packages/situations he will be utilized in.

Also, the more quickly Coates pushes Wheaton for more outside snaps, the more it may impact Eli as Wheaton has experience inside.

The Steelers don't have to run an offense with a traditional #3 slot receiver, ya know? We didn't last year, and it worked out pretty well. If Coates can provide another large, big play target like Bryant, he will get the snaps. Simple as that. I also don't think the Steelers would want three players, with limited playing time and less than two years experience, running routes at once (Coates, Rogers, James). Even if Green comes around, that's still a guy with zero chemistry with Ben. A lot of things can go wrong in that scenario. For that reason, I think Wheaton will hold down his position all season.

At least a couple people here are saying Rodgers will be a starter. I'm trying to figure out how that's going to happen.

I don't get what you are saying ? Not sure what that has to do with Rogers being the best and 1st. option in the slot...As such the first time we run that package and Rogers is the 1st. guy in the slot and he gets more snaps than the other WR'S there then he is the Starter ...

If Brown plays 99% of the snaps, and then Wheaton and Coates each play 55% of the snaps... Then who is the #2WR?

I think anyone with a grasp of Haley's playbook and WR usage... Simply wouldn't be using this #WR terminology.

Rodgers and Coates are going to play this year. We're just getting an idea of the formation and situational usage we can expect. All that is left, is seeing how their performance impacts volume.

I guess my feeling is that he is a rookie and his snap count will reflect that. Somewhere in the 30 range. I think expectations for this kid are a little high. He's still a rookie, an undrafted one at that, it will take him time to get acclimated to the NFL.

I also think its more important that Coates seizes his opportunity for this team to be as successful as it can be. They need to replace what Bryant brought to the field. They averaged 7 more points a game with Bryant, his ability to stretch the field will be missed, unless Coates steps up.

I think AB and Coates will be on the outside with Wheaton still mostly manning the slot. I think that could change by midseason if Coates falls on his face and Eli forces their hand, moving Wheaton to the outside and benching Coates.

Problem is they will run more 3 WR sets since they don't have the 2 TE's to throw out there consistently until Green gets healthy.

I think most of you are correct in that Eli is much better in the slot than Coates, DHB and possibly Wheaton.

This is his second year in the system just like Coates so it's only draft stock that you're trading in debating him over Coates.

Don't get me wrong, I love Coates and I actually thought with his physical nature coming out of college, that he's be a great slot guy particularly on running plays. (Think bigger Hines Ward) hasn't really gotten to that level yet.

I think the difference is that Cotes has some game experience. Rogers may blow by Cotes when it comes to production. That remains to be seen.

Correct. He played in 7 games, he's ahead of Rogers. I don't think he was targeted accept in the Denver game but being out there is when you learn, Rogers hasn't done that yet when its mattered and with DC's game planning for him.

I do think Rogers will be good, he looks to have that "it" factor, I just don't think he will burst onto the scene like some imagine he is going to.
