Opinions on Flag Football?

My little boy just started playing flag football because they have one at the private school where he is going. It's only $75 so I decided to let him. Well needless to say he really doesn't give two craps about it but a lot of kids don't either. It's a 4 and 5 year old team. But I got to thinking about it while I was watching them practice and I just wondered how profitable flag football really is. So I called a buddy of mine who has coached kids for years and asked him how I could help to peak Ben's interest in it and he flat out said that he thinks flag football is detrimental to a kid's development in the game because they don't learn the true techniques in football and it puts them behind kids who "start in pads". So I was just curious about all the other dads on here that have "been there and done that" as to what you guys think about it. The guy I'm friends with has a teenager that's a highly ranked player here in TN for O Line so he's a pretty hardcore coaching type of a dude. Just wondering what you guys think about it. I know that no kid is gonna be a "natural" and all that but what are even some things you think I could do to make football more interesting for my little Ben?

 

It's like T-ball and baseball - same principle, gotta start somewhere. Basics are still taught and not everyone will advance beyond them. At 4 & 5 years old - don't see anything wrong with flag. Plenty of time to still learn how to tear someone's head off or take someone's knee out. Heck I played FF well into my 30's long after my days of HS football. And now I'd probably have to go back to T-ball as well. Love Putt Putt golf too!
