Found this on another site. Pretty interesting breakdown of Jones' game.

1st pass deep down the left sideline, DHB is fairly well covered, but the pass is perfect. Nolan Carroll gets credited for breaking it up, but the pass actually goes over his outstretched hand into DHB's hangs and right through them. If that's AB, it's a 40 yarder.

2nd pass, he hits Rogers in the numbers for a 1st down.

3rd pass, he hits Coates for a completion. Not enough for a first down, but nobody else was open.

4th pass, the first interception, Coates is running a hook, but he actually steps on Carroll's foot and can't push off properly to come back for the ball. I thought Jones locked in on him when I saw it first, but James is actually the first option, but he's covered in that flat. Coates is the second option, and at the time Jones is letting it go, there's no way to know that Coates feet will get tangled up and he won't be able to come back for it.

5th pass is a screen, but the ILB reads it quickly and beats Pouncey to get right in Fitz's hip. Landry throws it into the ground. Good play, because, if he completes it, it goes for a loss.

6th pass, nice come back pattern to DHB complete for a 1st down.

7th pass, he sees the blitz coming and makes a good throw. DHB gets held for the interference.

8th pass is deep down the left sideline, just a tad outside. Coates gets his hands on it, and almost comes down with it. (b.s. push off penalty on the play. Coates didn't "shove" the DB in any way.)

9th pass, a quick WR screen to Rogers. He gets it out there with decent velocity for a good gain.

10th pass, he sees the blitz coming and hits Rogers on the slant in the vacated area for a 1st.

11th pass, everybody's covered down field, so he checks down to Toussaint for a good gain.

12th pass, he hits James on the quick out for a 1st.

13th pass is the corner fade to Cobi Hamilton. Cobi doesn't sell the inside fake well so the DB has decent position, but Jones makes a good throw, Mckelvin never looks back for the ball and has Hamilton's left arm pinned down for what should have been interference. Hamilton goes up with his right hand, gets the hand on it (if his other hand wasn't being held, it's a TD) and he bounces the ball off Mckelvin and it gets picked. The throw was good.

14th pass, hits Grimble right in the numbers, but Grimble drops it.

15th pass is 3rd and forever backed up to our goal line. Coates is open on the deeper route but he dumps it off to Rogers. This is the first "bad pass" I see, even though it's a completion. He could've had the first.

16th pass, he hits Cobi Hamilton in the numbers on a crossing pattern, Hamilton drops the ball.

17th pass, he hits Richardson out of the backfield for a 1st.

18th pass, he hits Cobi Hamilton with a nice pass on a ten yard out. Threw it the only place it could go.

19th pass, he avoids the rush with a nice little nimble move, and hits Coates deep for that work of art toe-tapper on the sideline.

20th pass, he telegraphs that he's throwing to Coates, but the throw is a good one. Grymes is behind Coates, and slows Coates down. The pass is on target. If Coates plants and jumps, it's a TD. Instead he tries to run through Grymes. Even then, it actually goes through Coates hands because he mis-times a bad jump. If this was Wheaton or Martavis, it's a TD.

21st pass, he hits James for decent gain on the quick out.

22nd pass, deep fly down the left sideline to Coates. the rush gets there quickly and Jones has to put it up early. It bounces off Coates' hands for the incompletion. Looks like it was thrown just a bit outside. Then we find out why the rush got there so quickly, the defense was off sides.

23rd pass, his last, Rogers is open deep. Jesse James gets beat and Jones gets walloped just as he throws it. It's a duck and it gets picked.

Jones just does not have that It factor needed to be a good QB in the NFL...Now if you put a SH in front of that factor then that would be a better gage of what he is...And to the fans who still think he is a good bu then you are also in the full of the same SH add the IT factor..lol

That may be so, but this whole thread has been about trying to give a bit more details to some of these claims...

I'm not sure anyone is saying he's good as in starter good; hell, maybe not even back up good. What some people are saying, though, is that there is a hell of a lot of vitriol for Jones getting in the way of actually assessing his performance, especially in the context of a) other back up QBs and b) the far more glaring and urgent needs the team had to address in the draft beyond the role of a player who, if all things are good, never sees the field.

WOW PWP who SH in your cornflakes? I think I may have to pin this comment somewhere when you go off on a soliloquy on one of your chosen garbage heap guys. NO No No you don't understand DHB can be a legit 8th string wr if he gets 7 targets, all deep go routes but not 8 targets, but they must occur on days not ending in "y" and Ben has a throwing percentage of pi squared with Haley holding a donut while Coach Tomlin dances on the sideline, obviously lol.

I like my garbage heaps a lot better than Jones and watching a bunch of 3rd. and 4th. string QB'S throw the ball much better than Jones really gets me upset ....I still think the Team needs a real QB ,I don't want to see Jones if Ben goes down..Yes I know no one will be as good as Ben , but watching AB go from 10 or 11 catches a game and 150 yards to 2 catches for 20 is just to hard to watch..I had a nightmare that Ben went down and it was very scary ...

edit..Coach T has talked about wanting to be like NE for years so why not get like them ? If Brady goes down they still have a chance for a solid season, I want our Steelers to be in the same boat...

i agree with just about all of this. i re-watched the game for the 3rd time last night and agree that most of those if not all of those picks were not LJ's fault. for a guy that claims to know football like you do PWP you may need to watch this game again and probably come up with a different outlook on jones. our starting WR's including wheaton would have made these picks different outcomes. i think the kid is doing a pretty decent job with his throws. he also don't take many sacks. he's playing better than most are making it out to be. it's easy to just blame the whole bad play on the qb without seeing what really is going on. haters are going to hate no matter what i guess.

I watched it and even his TD pass to DHB was short in the other game ...He makes a lot of throws to late or to early, his release is a bit slow and he tends to stare down his primary target .....Some want to blame Coates for those picks , but they look squarely on Jones to me...

I will give him credit in 1 area ,he does seem to have command of the Offense and he knows when to check into and out of plays ..So he deserves a that a boy button for that , he just lacks real NFL QB skills esp. for a guy with this much time under his belt ...

If you desire to be the champs you must prepare for adversity ..Let's say Ben goes down the first week and out for the season how many games do you think this Team can win with Jones ? I would say 3 or 4 ...If your # is anything close to that then we are not prepared for the season ...I know most Team are not , I don't want to be most Teams we need to be like the Pats,Panthers,GB,Cowboys,Falcons and Teams like that ...Heck I think the Panthers have 2 bu's better than him and the Falcons and GB have 3 bu's better than him ....

Probably not , but I think you need to at least be in a spot to remain competitive that's all I am saying..And then who knows sneak into the post season anything can happen, but to be 1 play away from might as well cancel the season is just bad ....

Good effort even if it's a a pretty homery take. I think it was titled "Landry Jones played a very, very good game". It would have been more aptly titled "Jones didn't stink as bad as you might have thought", or "For a guy who didn't throw a touchdown and threw 4 interceptions, he wasn't awful". Kidding aside, he made some bad decisions and obviously wasn't working mostly with the A team, but his performance wasn't as bad as most people probably think. I think that write up reinforces the idea that people will go to great lengths to defend or criticize him even in preseason.

i think it just goes to show everyone has to do their job to make the machine run. our receivers need some more polish and so does our line and qb. i do think the TD to DHB last week was the same throw to hamilton that got picked. i would like to think most vet wr's would have turned that into 6. the one that fluttered out wasn't his fault for sure. the pick 6 was iffy but not the greatest throw and i'll put that one on him. the one to coates in the EZ i still think he put the ball where it was supposed to go but the db made a smart play on it.

They will never be like NE because Tomlin's attention to detail is no where near where BB is, heck Im not sure they are in the same zip code. BB just traded his starting center not because he was a bad player but because he couldn't control himself in a violent sport and was more aggressive than the Pats liked. When Tomlin talks about wanting to be like the Pats he should start at the top.

Now I know you like to dig into level five of minutia for some of these guys but up until you are in team meetings and on a headset on game day you can't with any certainty know what they are asking Jones to versus what they having 3rd and 4th string QB'S work on. I know it can be assumed especially by some one with some coaching experience but you can't be certain and to let that work you up to the point where you are calling out other fans is just wasted effort. Relax and wait the regular season will cure all. Then worry and freak out.

Thats funny because thats how I feel about your evaluations. ;)

Landry is 1-1 as a backup, I'm not going to call him good or bad until he has a bigger body of work. What I will call him is on par with just about every other backup in the league I've seen.

Actually, I was wondering what the stat for backup SB wins was. What's the list?

Do they include what might be seen as QB battles (eg Doug Williams, Hostetler)? Just interested.

I think it's REALLY homery. I got as far as the writer absolving LJ of responsibility for the 1st and 2nd ints, and gave up. I don't hate LJ by any stretch, but I think his body of work is sketchy enough that we should be looking elsewhere for our #2. He's a good #3 though ;)

It's homerly, for sure. In some senses a rebalance of some of the heavy handed criticism, mind.

I don't disagree we could do better. But it's low, low on the list of priorities for me.
