I think the problem is deeper than it appears..It seems that overall if the Team drafts a guy in the first 4 rounds they are very slow to admit to making a mistake ..Another huge problem is the Team talks like our Defense is good ,so when they watch him rip our D up in camp they say ow boy LJ is ready....Then he plays Defenses that can actually guard guys and now those easy throws he had in camp are not there anymore...That belief that our pas defense is not so bad and it's coming around is probably the same reason that Ben starts the season so slow ,it is probably the reason Haley's game plans take a few weeks to evolve...

The first step to solving a problem is admitting you have a problem....When Coach T interviews he doesn't sound like he understands just how bad this pass defense is...

the only place to go from the 30th ranked pass defense is up and i believe they will do that. we are young back there pwp you have to give these guys time to gel and improve together. a couple of weeks in camp is not going to produce #1 defensive results. we saw a few years ago when the redskins had the dream team of top vet players implode. we have some good young talent now and they will need some time to become a good unit.

I would argue that very few teams have their future starter as a #2 or #3. With the exception of teams who literally just drafted a guy in the first round of the previous 2 drafts, and even then there's no guarantee those guys are any good. The reality is that most starting QB's are first round picks and that a good number of those picks still bust out. We drafted Landry a few years back in the 4th as a potential future guy... He hasn't looked like a future starter. We will draft another one again soon. The harsh reality is that Landry Jones would be as good or better than any late round QB taken in the draft. There aren't many NFL quality QB's available. We make too much out of the back up QB position

I'm sure he's aware that the pass defense is not one of the better ones in the league. He also doesn't want to dump a pile of crap on his players before any meaningful games have been played. We're gonna have a rookie slot CB and Golden and Cockrell taking over full time duties. The secondary is a little different than it was last year. I think it can be solid by the years end. Especially if the pass rush gets it going.

This is assuming that any answer to the press Tomlin gives is a direct channel to his inner soul.

Obviously - obviously - in no way would Tomlin employ the use of soundbite or platitude to deal with the media, whilst retaining what he really thought for the places it matters i.e. coaches meetings etc.

I agree to a point, but I would feel much better if he would simply admit that we have a lot of work to do in that area...Steven A tried to drag it out of him , but he never would even admit to our pass defense not playing up to standard..

Well you have higher hopes than me..Golden maybe he will work out ? Cockrell I don't like at all,he will be the new Blake IMO..Who is the other starter outside ? As of now it is Gay and he should be in the slot ....Plus Mitchell is listed as a FS , but he plays like a SS ,more of a hitter than a good angle taker and pass break upper..

I still see this pass D at this moment with no true #1 or #2 CB'S the wrong kind of Safety playing FS for today's NFL that is asking to much of the front 7 even if they are all world this D will still give up 300 passing yards most games ...

when you lose a troy and ike it's going to take some time to fix. we got rid of a big portion of last years pass defense. golson has also been a hit to it. he should be in his 2nd year and much improved at this point. he's not. grant has made a big jump from a rookie that was initially cut. golden has sat and learned with some meaningful snaps in relief and earned a chance to start over an old and slow will allen. 2 new draft picks and cockrell with a full camp under his belt is by far and away a better secondary than we had last year. we have added a lot of speed and our front is improved which bodes well for the back end. it's very different than what we had.

    Harsh.

I don't think Cockrell will be a HOFer by any stretch, but he's an upgrade from Blake.

Actually sanchez is in against Paxton lynch for the 2 QB spot, and Lynch looked really good in his last game, and at some point Lynch will be the starter this year, most likely sanchez will be cut because he is too expensive to carry as the 3 since his base salary is 4.5 million, plus 3.05 million in incentives for 2016: We are highly unlikely to sign him even if he gets cut which appears likely, for sure we wont pick up his 2016 contract to get him....

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the draft pick Denver traded for Mark Sanchez was a conditional pick.
That means the Broncos will not owe the Eagles anything if they decide to release Sanchez at final cuts. After losing out to Trevor Siemian for the starting job, Sanchez now appears to be competing with rookie Paxton Lynch for his roster spot. The Broncos could also save $3.5 million by releasing Sanchez. Aug 23 - 12:26 PM

That's why they drafted Golson, Grant, Burns, and Davis to address the weakness in the secondary.

Starters Golden, Mitchell, William Gay, Dorian Grant. Back ups Shamarko,Burns, Davis, Cockrell
These back ups could see significant playing time this year and better be improving, can you hear me Artie Burns
    Sean Davis.

I guess we will disagree. We have no number one, but Gay is a good number 2. Cockrell may not be ideal, but I think he will be okay. Davis should only get better as the year goes on... Most rookies do.

You're dead wrong about Mitchell. He has proven over his NFL career that he is a better FS than SS. Ryan Clark was a hitter. So is Chancellor for Seattle. He was a bad SS for Oakland then switched to FS, had a breakout year, and when healthy he has been a pretty good FS for us. You don't have to be a corner playing safety to be a good FS in this league.

I don't think we will be a top 10 pass D, and we will definitely have some games where we get a lot of yards gained on us... But I think we can be a middle of the road pass D. If we can be that with a good run d and have a solid pass rush, we can have a good defense.

Anyone who thinks this defense will take a step backwards needs to realize that, since 2013, out of 12 picks based on rounds 1-3, 8 of the last 12 were defensive based picks.

The notion that this defense is going to be worse than 2015 is ludicrous to the point of illogical. Furthermore, the previous 3 drafts have been focused heavily on the defense; 2016 being the semifinal. This team is not there yet to their "Renegade" days. However.. by 2017.. this defense will be far vastly improved that even anomalies like 2014 will be nothing but blips.

    Again guys...

In today's NFL playing for the Steelers you do ...The NFL thinks of the Steelers as a hard nosed rock em sock em Defense and as such they wont allow guys to pop guys and jar balls out or catch them after it pops up from a big hit ..In that type of style I would agree ,he could be near the play and pick off balls the SS created .....Only 2 huge problems no SS good enough to create them and secondly even if we had 1 and he could the refs would call foul...

So this is the part we see much differently...We must have ball skilled guys at the Safety spots because the way they call our games that's the best way to be effective...

That's also my main knock with Mitchell. He used to take bad angles, but seems to got much better at this. He still is not a ball hawking free saftey but more or strong Safety. Has little range sideline to sideline and always late when he gets there. His interceptions are when its thrown right to him.

He's servicable but not your ideal free safety.

I like the way you put it, and you are spot on...He is serviceable is a huge problem when your #2 CB Gay is the same and your SS is the same and your #1 CB is,, well we don't even have 1 ...This pass D will not be any better than last years still not enough skill ...Almost every Team in the NFL got much better at the WR spot and the Steelers didn't ...We need game changers and we really have none on the entire pass Defense...

as a team we went from 10 picks in 2013 to 11 picks in 2014 to 17 picks in 2015. mitchell led us with 3. gay has 6 in those years. cockrell 2 last year playing part time. golden had 1 last year playing part time. that's 8 from guys that will be starting this year in our secondary. it is improving.

I disagree ....I don't think it's the secondary ..I think it's the front 7 and the DC ...Our blitzes are more timely and a lot less predictable , I just don't see a true upgrade in skill yet ..I have hope for the young guys if they can ever get healthy and get on the field..
