I have a question for those of you on the board that have more technical expertise than I do. I was watching NFL Network yesterday and they were talking about the defense and the LB's as it was a piece that was going to feature Shazier and how he was having a great camp. They showed the OLB's engaged in either a block shedding/pass rush drill or some kind of hitting drill where they hit a blocking sled. It was basically just the linebackers hitting the pad and driving it. Harrison showed what looked like great form keeping his hands flat and inside on the pad and just popping from his base. Jarvis Jones ended up getting a double session because Peezy didn't like what he saw and what I noticed was JJ keeping his hands outside and grabbing the edges which would be where the shoulder pads are. Dupree did maybe three reps and was done and the other thing that struck me was one of the younger guys wearing 49 I believe was coming out of more of a two point/hand in the dirt stance and driving with the crown of his helmet.

My question is what is proper technique here? I'm assuming Deebo was spot on and keeping his hands inside on the chest, while obviously Jarvis was having a bad drill because of the repeat performance and the guy using his helmet at waist level on the sled would have been flagged. Anyone know the drill? Familiar with what the goals are? I wish I had a link but it was a camp report I watched on my phone.

sounds like a shed drill. You get more length on your arm extension if your hands are inside rather than out. Plus the offensive guy can get inside and control you if your arms/hands are wide. Generally you want to extend your arms and keep the offensive guy away from your body and then you can shed either way depending on where the ballcarrier is. I think the goal would be to control the blocker so you have free reign to flow to the runner.

Not sure about the guy leading with his helmet, you'd never see the play develop in front of you.

Probably looking for more wrong arming technique..What this means is jabbing the outside shoulder from the inside with the other arm...For example to set up your inside move from the right end you would jab the right shoulder of the OL with your right arm coming across your body..To rush outside you wrong arm the OL with your left arm hitting him inside his left shoulder...

All the great pass rushers have this in their game, this hands game sets up all the rips, swims and spins...If a guy doesn't have these skills he will never be a dominate pass rusher...

this. i would add it also makes the blocker have to try to control this man with his hands outside which could also draw a flag.

I am not sure technique can help Jarvis Jones much. He is too slow and not strong enough. Reminds me a bit of Alonzo Jackson.

In general I think your spot on, in specific with James Harrison - the holding penalties are never called.
