Ok so I like Timmons a lot but something has to be done. I just read he will be the highest paid ILB in the league this season. He's not worth that by any stretch of the imagination. PFF has him ranked 87th at the lber position. This has to be one of the worst contracts in the league and short of cutting him we are screwed. I think it's time for him to get the Steelers vet treatment and tell him to take a pay cut or else. He is getting paid top dollar and is not a top ilber. He doesn't stay in the field in sub packages anymore and has lost a step.

His paycheck isn't the result of his play but rather the consequence of endless restructuring year after year it just continues to jack the base pay up the following year. Heath Miller was due to make like 11million this year if I remember correctly because of the restructuring. If they keep it up with Ben he could be the highest paid QB for a year without renegotiating a contract.

Won't that be bad for future deals if we are known to keep restructuring then release or ask for a paycut lol.

Yeah those numbers are not necessarily what they're making, but more what their cap hit is.

His CAP HIT is the highest at the position. His PAYCHECK/SALARY is not. We restructured him so many times we owe him a lot on the current cap number. Honestly, I don't think the FO cares about that at the moment. This team is poised for a run and they aren't going to just run a competent ILB off due to what the cap hit is, especially when they can afford it.

They can afford it this year yes but not next year. No way no how. I'm fine keeping him this year as all players are already in place but after this it would be either take a pay cut or bounce.

Lol...yeah, I was gonna say that timmons is in his final year and that they were cobversating about stretching that money out if he signed a new deal. Timmons play is diminishing....shazier is calling the plays on defense, but we need his veteran leadership for this Superbowl run

You're right it's his Cap hit. A lot of fans don't understand that. It has happened with a lot of our players the last few years.
I don't know all the numbers, but if we cut Timmons we're still going to have to absorb a large cap hit then pay his replacement. Wouldn't be that smart of a move considering Timmons is still playing at a high level.

Exactly. I think they are making the right move by taking the cap hit this year with Timmons. Next year is a clean slate and they can re-sign at the right price.

Oh ok yeah I didn't even look at that. For some reason I was thinking he had one left. Well I certainly wouldn't bring him back next year. I think Williams is going to be a great replacement and he and shazier will make a nasty combo.

I would say Timmons is playing at an average level at this point. I think he needs to slim down some.

Yes and if I had to choose I'm going Williams he will be cheaper and is younger and will be on par with Timmons by then. We can't pay everyone and of the list of people that need resigned Timmons should be way down that list unless he is ready to take a deep discount. Hell I put Boswell before him on that list of players. The Steelers can save a ton and not have much of any drop off in play. Timmons has been banging for what 10 seasons now. Do we not remember what happened when we hung onto defenders for too long. The cap was a mess and the defense wasn't good. Timmons has never been the vocal leader of the defense so you wouldn't be losing that either. Shazier calls the defense so there's that also. Timmons value to the Steelers isn't there anymore. Shazier is the quick ILB and Williams can be the banger.

See how Timmons does this year. I believe he was hampered by turf toe all last year. I'm sure it won't break the bank to keep him if they have any interest.

Timmons will get his contract restructed should he be back to his usual self. Turf toes can be quite bothersome or career ending depending on the severity. Considering he has had an offseason to heal it up, Timmons still should have a spark left in him.

He wasnt very average playing with a toe injury all year. In 2015, Timmons accounted for 119 combined tackles, 5 sacks and 6 pass defenses.

I don't think we need to overpay for Timmons, but he still is a much better player than Williams IMO. I do like Williams a lot though. Timmons isn't going to command a huge contract that'll get us in trouble, say like Woodley's did.
Not quite time to run him off yet.

It just depends on what his contract is and what we can afford. To me Brown, Bell, and Bos come before him. We don't have an adequate replacement for any of them. There's just not enough money to go around.
