Oh yeah I know. He actually was slamming all the critics who thought he was trying to sound like Jimmy Buffet. What's funny is that Kenny Chesney just flat out rips him off though and people try to act like he's some kind of genius. Zack Brown is a talented guy but honestly his band rips him off pretty hard too.

I'll cut the Zac Brown Band some slack since they have some actual musical talent and a wider range of style.

Kenny was a run-of-the-mill country singer with maybe one semi-decent song (The Good Stuff. Not the greatest song, but performed well enough.) until he briefly mentioned Jimmy Buffett in a song. Drunk Parrotheads who go crazy for anything remotely associated with Jimmy made the song a hit. And a light bulb went off in Kenny's head. He's been a poser ever since.

Don't get me wrong. There's plenty of room for other artists to sing about that kind of stuff. Jimmy doesn't have - nor should he have a monopoly on it. And maybe Kenny actually embraced that lifestyle, however you define it. But the move was so sudden and calculated that you'll have to forgive my cynicism.

The Zac Brown Band performs in other styles and about other subject material. Alan Jackson did an homage to Jimmy. Other artists dip their toes in the water on occasion (no pun intended). What they DON'T DO is co-op the style and substance of another artist all the way down to merchandising in an obvious bid to be the heir apparent. Even if you have talent, it looks shady.

Then again, maybe I should be thankful. Anything that keeps him from making another "She thinks my tractor's sexy.":maintete:

(I don't care about the rumors. He can live his life however he chooses. Doesn't affect me or my opinion of his career in the slightest.)

Yeah ZBB is a really talented bunch of dudes. That's funny you mention the tractor song because the girl in that video is also from Maynardville. Her name is Gina Mabe and she was a Playboy Playmate and one of my buddies used to work at a Dairy Queen that was here at the time and one day her mom was in there showing off the magazine that had her daughter in it. It takes all kinds. LOL! Don't feel bad for being cynical. I feel the same way. I think it's totally calculated on his part. It's like his music now can only be about either nostalgia or Jimmy Buffet rip off bullcrap. I've even heard that he literally bought his own island.

Don't be dissin' my Jimmy Buffett! Everyone in my line of work LOVES at least one Buffett song! We can all relate to that "One Particular Harbour" where you can finally get a "Cheeseburger in Paradise" while you either avoid or become one of the "Fins". Buffett is an average singer at best but, he's one of the best songwriters out there. On par with Dylan or Paul Simon. There's even a sailing club here that named all their rental sailboats after Buffett songs. There are no boats named "The Perfect Country Song" to my knowledge. As for Coe's Key West song, Jimmy made it big and smartly left Key West. I've been to that little island and done the "Duval street crawl" and, while the place is a blast to visit, I can't see why anyone would live there on purpose. The only other good songs that Coe has are the ones on his X-rated album. I have a tape copy of that album and I'm amazed that it was actually recorded! NOT for the easily offended or faint of heart!
I like country music but don't understand the attraction to Kenny Chesney. Give me Garth, or Travis Tritt, or Brooks and Dunn! I even like that tick checker, Brad Paisley!

Brad Paisley is one of my favorite guitar players alive. He respects the traditions of country. I'm a huge Merle Haggard and Hank Sr. fan as well. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry is my favorite song of all time in any genre. DAC actually didn't mind Jimmy Buffet at all. He just was tired of people saying he was trying to rip him off. My buddy had that X Rated album and I remember when he let me hear that when I was a teenager and I couldn't believe it. There's one particular title on there with the word "Lover" in the title...if you know what I mean... that would pretty much get him killed these days. LOL! It was actually a joke about his bass player or something like that though. He also has another song about how things would have been if the south had won the Civil War as well that's really hardcore. I just think of all those songs as tongue in cheek and not things that he really believed. I could be wrong though. I wouldn't put Buffet in the McCartney or Brian Wilson territory of awesomeness though. Really I don't even know if I'd put him in Dylan territory. I think of him as more of a sorta "niche" type guy like Tom Waits or John Prine or something like that.

Dylan was once asked who he thought the best song writers were out there. He only named a few. Jimmy Buffett was one. I'll get the link for you when I'm actually at my computer. ;)

Niche, yes but you have to look at the whole body of work. "He went to Paris" and "The Captain and the Kid" for example VS "Margaritaville" and "Fins"

Exactly. I won't call myself a Parrothead. But I do love Jimmy's music - especially when I'm in a certain mood, or need to give myself an attitude adjustment. But some of his (for lack of a better term) "Beach party" music can be a tad goofy and even cringe inducing. I'm looking at you, "Grapefruit, Juicy fruit." And that god awful song he did with Toby Keith.

But outside of the whole beach bum/sailor/piratewannabes songs are some real gems. Then again, I have nothing against the popular stuff. They're mood lifters. Many of them my favorites.

And Margaritaville is a great song. It's just played way to death. ;)

That's cool that he mentions Randy Newman. Randy Newman rules.

I'm with you. His older stuff is his best IMO. "Incommunicato" and, of course, "Come Monday"
I don't recall a song with Toby. Must have been forgettable.

I didn't realize he started essentially ripping off Jimmy Buffet. I guess that's why he always seems to sell out football stadiums.
I have to say I can't really blame him for it, either. He might have sold his soul, but he's making truckloads of money doing it.
