I'm not setting up a poll but wondering what you think. Do we exercise it and why or do we not exercise it and why?

I say you do. 5 sacks in 3 years is not what we hoped for obviously.

    But, heres why I would.

    1. It will not be at all that burdensome on cap space to pick up the option. I dont know the number but I think it will be 8mil.

2.We can look at him as a bad starter or we can look at him as good depth. We should want to keep good depth so that whoever we choose in this draft, or the next draft at OLB has some rotation instead of being thrown to the fire.

    3. My last point on this. He actually showed that he can play (a little) coming off the end of the 2015 regular season. If that little incline suggests that his growing pains are starting to numb, we could regret not picking up the option if he balls out next year. Likely? I dont think so. But paying a small price for either A. A high production OLB or B. An average body for depth, makes the decision a NO risk, possible high reward scenario.

I wouldn't care if they let him walk and I won't be too mad if he stays. I will say though that he absolutely has not shown that he deserves a big long term deal. For whatever reason he's just not panned out. Whether it's injuries or whatever. If you get taken in the 1st you have to produce more than what he has. Does anyone think he would have even been able to sniff the field back in 08 when our d was so dominant?

Not you too BFT? I think he is turning into a solid all around linebacker. Everyone is so caught up in that draft status bs that expectations are unreal. At this point I'm surprised Decastro isn't getting more negative opinions from fans. I mean he has been solid but really isn't living up to his 1st round status and dominating the game.

I totally agree that draft status really shouldn't determine the expectations we put on a guy and actually meant to put that. But at the same time we know that teams expect a return on such an early investment. I agree that these guys really become sort of victims of all the "experts" and "analysts" that make them out to be the "next big thing" in the league and all that. But when you really look at it the tradition of STEELERS backers is not just to be "solid". It's to be feared and it's to be dominant. That's the "standard" as Tomlin would say. Can we really say that Jarvis has been feared and dominant? I think of a Steelers backer as someone that teams gameplan for and account for at all times. A guy that is on everyone's radar. If a guy can be that guy then I'm fine with whatever the team decides to pay them. I just don't think Jarvis has done enough to prove that he really deserves a high paying deal. Don't get me wrong. I'm not exactly saying I want him gone but just that I don't think he should garner a deal that isn't very team friendly. He has certainly shown flashes and made some splash plays but I just don't know that he has done "enough".

No you don't excercise the 5th year option. If they decide they want to keep him they can extend him at a rate more inline with his worth. He's replacement level player at best, paying him 8-10million a season is something the Browns would do

    You don't pay your 2nd and 3rd string 8+ million a season

Don't you think it seems like we have some really divisive players in recent years? I'd say Jarvis is by far the most divisive on defense and Mike Wallace was pretty divisive on offense. Mendy was also pretty divisive. Of course I think the team done the right thing in both of those situations and I think they'll do the right thing in the Jarvis situation. I've gotta believe though that they really have to feel a little underwhelmed with him at this point.

I actually agree with Strummer for a change haha.

8M a year is WAY too much unless Jarvis plays at a Pro Bowl level this year. AB makes 8M!

And last year the starting ROLB last year was 36. Haha.

To me OLB is the biggest need for the Steelers aside from safety. You are right ... Jarvis has not earned it, dont give him anything until he at least proves he will do it on a consistent basis in the future. Dont make the same mistake we made with Cortez Allen.

In fact this might sound harsh, but trotting Harrison out there might be good for us this year, but it is bad for us long term. We should draft a guy early to directly compete with Jarvis. They wont do that with Harrison in the roster.

OLB is a big need, and will continue to be. Picking up the 5th year is a good bet. The ROLB spot will be pretty bare with Jarvis and Harrison leaving at the end of the same season. We either invest in OLB early this year, and I'm sure very few of you want it to be first or second round, or you pick up Jarvis for a 5th year. In the 2017 season he would be getting paid 8mil to be the starting ROLB with Harrison out the door. A good one? No. Maybe. Who knows? But to not pick up that option is to say, right now, that we will be going ROLB in the first round of the 2017 draft, whether Jarvis has a good or bad year. We would HAVE to. Not smart, and not wise to assume that a rookie coming out of next years draft class would do better against NFL starting LT's. It's only one more year, one more chance, and a smart move to ensure depth. Making the decision to cut him because hes a first rounder that didnt play like one is not a good decision, IMO. He's still a body. Addition by subtraction might have true in the case of Antwan Blake but it absolutely wont be with our pass rush.

Btw, sack production isnt the only production an OLB gets in our defense. We very very often drop our OLBs in coverage, and Jarvis got a pick in that coverage.

I don't see how either of those two(wallace and mendy) were divisive players. Wallace was a one trick pony(a fast body catcher). That was blatantly obvious to anyone that actually paid attention. Mendy was a very good running back running behind a crap offensive line. Jones was just completely over drafted by the Steelers. I don't know who didn't do their homework on him, but someone screwed up in a big way. IF you go back and look at his sacks at UGA you won't find a guy that was dominating the guy across from him and piling up sacks. What you will find is a guy that picked up a bunch of coverage sacks and somehow our scouting department missed it entirely. I've lived in Georgia for 20 years and watched pretty much all of his games. I called him a bust before he was drafted on this board and a member from Tennessee went to great lengths telling me how wrong I was. Where is that guy now?

While I know it took DeCastro a couple of years to fully realize his potential, you are aware he was a First Team All-Pro last year, right? He was fantastic in 2015. Well worth a first round pick.

Agree, for four years now we have been saying he is not ever going to be what we expect from our OLB's.
Many here were always saying give him time, that he will come around, when it was pretty obvious if you saw him in college and into the first year, he didn't have what it takes. Some here even will say he is good in pass coverage...Don't think that's what we need from our OLB, we NEED good pass rushers that can sack or hurry the QB and to be good enough against the rush and hold the edge.

He will cost too much money for depth purposes when you can get someone like him in the fourth or higher round. Let's be real and you are so right that someone didn't do their homework with JJ and its okay to admit it, because you can't hit on all of them but for some reason there are some here that will never say that the team did something wrong even when it's obvious.

I wasn't honestly calling Decastro a bust I was using him to demonstrate how unrealistic the expectations are of JJ based on round drafted. If you look at Decastro they have a somewhat similar career path complete with missed timed for injuries, falling into the Steelers laps, 1st round picks and so on. I think that because of the position played though more is expected of Jones where as everyone would have been thrilled to give Decastro time to develop at his own pace.

I think if they draft a CB/safety in the first round this year and he struggles the critics will say the same thing. 1st round picks need to show more out the gate. When more often than not it doesn't work that way.

My take is no, don't take the 5th year option on him..........

First off just because OLB is becoming a big need quickly should have nothing to do with extending him, it should be based on performance and future outlook. So far he has disappointed though last year he did show improvement.

Not picking up the option doesn't mean we lose him, it means next year he becomes a ufa. Make him work for his next contract, if he continues to improve then re-sign him but I think we should let the market determine his value and right now it isn't 8mil.

Fear and dominate is a perception brought on by a long standing tradition of having guys ready in the wings. Jarvis was something totally different in he was drafted and thrust into the lineup before he had a chance to get the experience guys like Porter and Harrison had playing behind Gildon and Lloyd and Greene. I mean outside of Woodley when was the last time the drafted an OLB high in the draft and expected him to make an impact that quickly? I don't even think they had plans to get Woodley that much work at first it was just he played at a high level and was needed if memory serves due to injury and just never looked back.

I don't see any other team paying 8M for Jarvis either.

Steelers will get a crack at paying him less.

By Wallace I mean there were some that really wanted to keep him and some that really wanted to let him go. I really wanted to let him go. I disagree about Mendy though. I really don't think he was that good. I think Le'Veon would have been able to produce much more behind the same line that Mendy played behind. I just don't think Mendy had the fire in the belly for the game. I also think that line was made to look much worse than it actually might have been because of BA's system. The sacks under BA are always high and qb's that play in his system get hurt a lot. I know Ben has been hurt under Haley's system too but there's no denying that he gets rid of the ball quicker and is in a much less riskier system.

Timmons was on the field quite a bit in year one and was a starter by year 2 wasn't he?

Timmons started in year 3 but he was really young when he was drafted. 20 I think.

The biggest play I remember was in the blowout of the Ravens when Harrison just destroyed Reed and Timmons caught the fumble in the air and kept his feet in bounds.

That was a nice flash of ability.
