We keep losing the greats and getting stuck with the beibers. Wtf? I saw him twice on the same night back in the late 90's. The first was at a big amphitheater and the second was at this small club with about 150 people. The amphitheater was great, but the club show was epic. I didn't realize how tiny he was until standing next to him before the second show. I'm a tall 6'1" and towered over him. It was kind of weird my friends and I were standing there talking waiting for the show to start. I turned to my right and there he was standing next to me talking to someone. Exchanged pleasantries and he disappeared a few minutes later the show started

Wow, freaking young. Purple Rain was huge when I was growing up. Another iconic figure gone.

    RIP, Prince.

I wonder what happened. I saw where he cancelled a couple shows, but haven't read anything else about it. RIP.

How cool that you met him. He's always looked really short to me. I'm 6'1", too.

He's now in R&R heaven driving a little red corvette in the purple rain while wearing a raspberry beret!
    RIP

I was shocked when I heard the news of his passing earlier today.

Rest in peace, Prince. I hope you're partying like it's 1999!

Love or hate his music (and I'm certain everyone loves at least 1 of his songs - at the very least), he was greatly influential in the music world and in some ways, broke the mold. Maybe once a generation do you get an artist like him. A sad day indeed.

I don't know if it's true. I can't find a source for the alleged interview. But a popular story has it that an interviewer once asked Eric Clapton "What's it like being the best guitar player in the world?"

Eric Clapton answered, "I don't know. Ask Prince."

When I read that, all I could picture was the "little sweet" guy from the Dr. Pepper commercials.

Music icon that will be missed.

Last week he was supposedly sick from the flu. Now he's passed. It will be interesting to see what the coroner says ultimately. R.I.P.

I remember hating Prince at one time and then I went to a party at someones house back in the burgh and they had a concert of his playing on the tv with about 20 people watching it. I walked in the room, shook my head but then started watching for some fortunate reason and then couldn't take my eyes away. The dude was absolutely amazing. Too bad I never got to see him live.

    RIP Prince

I would say it's not true because Clapton has said that he considers Buddy Guy the greatest player alive. Prince was extremely talented for sure but I could never take him seriously because of how seriously he seemed to take himself. The whole "symbol" and "Artist Formerly Known As" stuff was just ridiculous to me. Also I will forever think of him as the guy that played basketball with Charlie Murphy and could levitate. I really would like to know if Prince thought that was funny or not. If you want to hear one of the most hilarious Prince stories of all time you should go check out Kevin Smith telling his Prince story. It is an epic story and it's basically safe to say that he wound up probably not being very good friends with Prince.

By all accounts, he loved it. He even used Dave Chappelle for the cover to his album, "Breakfast Can Wait."

You've got to look at why he did it and what the mainstream industry was trying to do, as they do to all artists. By all accounts he was very serious about his music and fought the big labels hard for artists.

I'm very interested to see all the things he has locked away in that vault. Kevin Smith has a great story on a documentary he did for him.
    NSFW He does cuss.

Yeah I've seen that video before. I was telling somebody about it the other day at work. Kevin Smith tells hilarious stories but man he sure does cuss a lot in the process. LOL!

He changed his name to that symbol in protest of a record contract he signed as a teenager. He had hundreds of unreleased songs and WB wouldn't let him release them because it would saturate the market and diminish their returns. Once his contract was up he changed back to Prince.

I wonder what the 20 somethings, who think they discovered Prince, will think when they find out that a lot of them were conceived with a Prince song in the background?!
    "She wore a raspberry beret..........."
