The total dead money is the same whether the cut is pre or post June 1. The only difference in dollars is the allocation between 2016 and 2017. As a pre June 1 cut, all $4.05 million hits us immediately. As a post June 1 cut, $1.35 million hits this year and the remaining $2.7 million goes against the 2017 cap.

Also, by doing the cut pre- June 1, we clear up some space now, whereas with the post June 1 cut we would not get any cap relief until June 2. So, if you're thinking that the move was done to clear up space now (which I don't think is the case), then yes the pre June 1 designation makes sense. In my view, we did this pre June 1 because we could, and we want to keep the dead money off the books for 2017.

I guess I don't understand cause from over the cap it says dead money pre June 4.050 mil and dead money post June 1 is 1.350 mil. Major savings as a post June 1 cut, either way the money gets spread over 2 years right?

Also I think with this cut it was meant to free up money now but I am sure they could have freed up money else where better. They could have extended DD or LT and/or turned some of Bens salary into a bonus. I don't like this move at all, if I am understanding it right....IF, LOL.

Fat lot of good it did me meeting his brother down here Camp LeJeune way. There goes my #28 interception ball. For those who don't know. His brother was medically retired from the Marines with 16 years service. Ran into him playing his numbers same place I do. I said hey he played Citadel. His brother was impressed I knew that. Anyhoo I said hey ask him for the ball of one of his int's. He said he would. If I get it now he will sign it as a ram. I may not take it now Ha.

Yeah but those 2 who never played maybe can play their butts off. We got rid of Dick LeBeau now lets play high draft rookies before their knees start to go. PS. I liked DL but when other teams say they know what he is doing it is time to move on from a coach

None of the signing bonus money goes away. The dead money is $4.05 million, which is the remaining cap number from his signing bonus (prorated at $1.35 million for each of '16, '17 and '18 - the remaining 3 years of his contract). That $4.05 million has to be accounted for against the cap. The only question is whether it's all accounted for in 2016, or whether part is deferred to 2017. So, here's how the dollars work. Prior to the cut, his cap number for 2016 was $5.75 million, made up of $4.4 million base salary and $1.35 million for the 2016 portion of the remaining $4.05 million cap value from his signing bonus. The pre June 1 cut wiped the $4.4 million salary off the books (along with his 2017 and 2018 salaries), but accelerated the $1.35 mil/yr signing bonus numbers from 2017 and 2018 to the current year. Thus we take a dead money hit of $4.05 million ($1.35 million x 3). The 2016 cap savings is his original cap number of $5.75 million minus the dead money of $4.05 million, which equals $1.7 million.

IF we had designated him a post June 1 cut, the 2017 and 2018 portions of his bonus number would have moved to 2017, leaving us with $2.7 million in dead money for 2017. The cap savings in 2016 would have been $4.4 million, but at a cost of adding the $2.7 million in dead money to our 2017 cap number. So, what I was saying is that if we can afford to take the hit this year, we should so that he's completely off the books for 2017 and beyond. Hopefully this clears it up.

I was watching a show on the NFL Network yesterday with Hoge and two other former players and they mentioned an interesting statistic. Only 11% of rookies start their first full season. After hearing that my first thought was there are a big fat pile of Steeler fans that need to hear this.

Dude the proof is in the pudding. If he were some hot commodity he would have a job. It's the same **** as with Boykin. If he was half as good as some Steelers fans think he wouldn't have ended up with a one year vet minimum contract. Or have been traded for a bag of peanuts.

Is that what Boykin got, 1 year vet minimum? If so, then I stand corrected on over estimating his ability. No wonder he wasn't starting.

I think the misperception comes from seeing (some) first and second rounders starting for other teams, and comparing that to the 6 or 7 picks we've made, ignoring the other picks the other teams have made. If that makes sense...

Even if we did that, don't you think we still need to add a veteran?

After reading a bit on him your right, first of all he is more a slot guy and this:

The Auburn product spent the first four seasons of his career in Indianapolis, and has been with the Cardinals the last three years. He had 50 tackles and an interception in 2015, but despite playing on the league's fifth-ranked defense, Pro Football Focus had him with a 50.7 cover grade. That was barely better than former Giants cornerback Jayron Hosley.

Personally I could care less about dead money ect. just glad this mental midget is no longer on the roster. Ba Bye...

And some wanted or thought that Blake would be back :lolol:

In this pass happy arena league platform that Goofdell has created the need for quality defensive backs is imperative.

This is the year where the defensive side will be heavy in the draft especially in the secondary.

If a team has 7 draft picks and they start 1 rookie that is 14%.

So on average each NFL team starts 1 rookie per year. Steelers have started rookies in 5/9 seasons.*

The Steelers have had 5/74* rookies start under Tomlin. That means the Steelers are only 60% as likely to start a rookie as the average team.

*Includes Shazier who only started 5/9 games his rookie year.

How did you get off my ignored list? Haha.

The "this player isn't valued by coaches or GMs so he isn't good" argument is the one I hate the most.

James Harrison is the best example: UDFA, cut by the Steelers, cut by the Ravens, cut by the Steelers, signed by Steelers, sits behind Porter, no team trades for him or has any interest, starts for Steelers, DPOY and one of the best OLBs of all-time.

"Harrison sucks! He wasn't a 1st round pick! Why did he go undrafted and get cut?! 92 is garbage!"

A couple things. You're ignoring the full season part of hoge's statistic. Two take it up with him. They're his numbers and I guarantee he did his homework.

I'm not disagreeing with his numbers I am saying the Steelers are about half as likely as other teams to start a rookie based on Hoge's 11% number.

Only 6.7% of rookies start for the Steelers under Tomlin. 5.4% if you don't count Shazier who only started 5 games and had limited snaps his first year.

I think in Harrison's case, he was the exception; and not the rule. By and large, if the league passes on you, you suck.

With the way players are bombing or being cut in the secondary, we are going to have no choice but to rely on a rookie or two.

Passes on you in what sense?

Like the Steelers starting LT, LG, ROLB, FB, SS being UDFA sense?

Or the AB being the best WR in the NFL but drafted in the 6th round sense?

Or Tom Brady, or Richard Sherman, or Kam Chancellor, or Josh Norman, or Kurt Warner, or Limas Sweed...Oh. Wait. That was a miss for a different reason. LOL!
