Word is he won't play 2016, mainly due to nerve issues in his knee/leg in his latest examination. It took Spence two years to return from a similar horrific injury/damage.

Its a shame, I like the kid, his attitude during his interviews and think the Steelers should seriously draftiing him late, taking a chance his career isn't over or at least greatly diminished.

Teams with a lot of picks like the 49ers or Titans will probably draft Smith, the Steelers can't afford to use a pick on a player who can't play in 2016. If he was there in the 6th then maybe you take a chance.

I still think he is a day 2 pick. I don't think this is a Lattimore type injury.

It could be 2-3 years before he gets going. I think you have to roll the dice at some point on that type of talent.

Maybe one of our 7th rd picks or if he's an UDFA, which I think he will be, then sure, take a flyer on him but Spence was never the same.

It was amazing he even returned to the field, sad to say but Smiths career may already be over.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's taken day 2 but also wouldn't be surprised if he fell out completely. Before the injury he's a viable #1 pick and it seems structure wise he's pretty much healed leg pressing 600 lbs........ yet they are saying he may miss all of 2016 due to the nerve damage..... that's not good and Blast may be right about his career.

Still, I'd rather draft him rd 7 and if he never plays it would have still been worth the chance, if he does return he'll most likely never be what he would have been but still a solid football player worthy of a 7th rd pick for sure.

I think he'll go by the end of round 2. Some playoff team at the end of the 2nd will take a longer term view and grab him to stash away on reserve for 2016. I could definitely see New England doing that with one of their two second rounders.

I disagree, in rd 2 you're still looking for players who will make the roster, at least be a STer and potential starter sooner than later. It's now determined he'll most likely miss this year due to nerve damage and that means he has a 50/50 chance of Never being what he was..... Too high of a risk to gamble on a 2nd rd pick imo....

Well, we will find out in a couple of weeks. However, he WILL be drafted. There's too much there for teams to take a shot on very uncertain projects in the later rounds when there's a guy sitting there who clearly has starter talent when (and if) he heals.

The draft is risky in every round. So many 1st rounders never pan out talent-wise, never mind 2nd and later rounders. At some point, someone will see his medical risk as being less than the overall quality risk of a less talented player. I think that occurs somewhere around the 60th pick with the playoff teams that may be able to adopt a longer view and still keep things together.

You know another team that is probably thinking about him - Tennessee. They now have 6 picks in the top 76, and they are realistically still a couple of years from being able to compete for their division. They may bundle some picks together to move back up and grab a tackle. However if they use all of those picks on players, they would be in a good situation to take Smith in the 3rd with the knowledge that he will redshirt.

Remember Aaron Colvin CB a couple years back? He was projected to be a 1st rd pick then torn an ACL during the Senior Bowl, his draft stock dropped and was drafted in the 4th rd. I believe Smith's 1st rd grade was higher than Colvins ( though Colvins position is a more desirable one ) but his injury is much more devastating.

I could see the Titans drafting him but I will be shocked if its before day 3. That final Medical test really flagged him. CBS updated draft board has him dropped to a 3/4 rd pick now.

I'd be shocked if anyone takes him that early. Easy for fans to say take a chance, they have nothing at stake.

And yes, the draft is risky so why waste a pick on someone that is even more of a long shot. Doesn't matter what he showed on tape, that kid on film is gone, him playing at that level will be more of a miracle than playing again at all.

The whole league got a look at the Steelers experiment with Spence and the results it produced. A long miraculous recovery and a player that was the shell of himself.

I agree with Cajun, late rounder at best. Would love nothing more than to be wrong and Smith have a great career, seems like a good kid.

He was an incredible college player, but if he has drop foot or whatever they call it....he is done. Not even worth a 7th. Now, if that is wrong....give the guy a shot.

Well, I doubt many 3rd-7th round players actually play in their rookie seasons..... I think someone will draft him in hopes of a return down the road. Look at Willis McGahee, it's possible.

Jaylon Smith's injury really is tragic. The issue is though is how badly his nerves were damaged. While we have come a long way in sports rehab and treatment, we are still a long ways off from completely restoring nerve damage; NFL or otherwise for that matter. Realistically, Jalyon will have to wait until 2018 if he wants a full 100% recovery because I am in the minority to believe that bringing him back a year early in 2017 will cause more health concerns towards his knee.

As for his pick, honestly... I cannot say. I would want to say round 4.. but who gets him remains to be seen.

If he is there in the sixth, which I doubt, I would draft him, Its horrific, the kid was the best football player on the field
or in the draft, he was that good. His MO fit the Steelers to a T. What a talent.

I'd be okay if they took a chance on him at any point after the third. He really would be a great player if he comes back to full health.

You mean, like Senquez Golson last year??? I would LOVE Smith in the 2nd round. Imagine in 2017 Shazier/Smith as ILB.

I didn't think the Golson injury came up until training camp. Don't think health was an issue at draft time. I could be wrong...

I hate the Cowboys but I give them credit for rolling the dice. If he even gets to 90% he will be fantastic.

Cowboys doctor was the same doctor that worked on Jaylon Smiths knee.

Whole thing was probably a ruse so they could get him in round 2.:hehehe:

Whole thing reminds me of the Lattimore situation in San Francisco. And I think it's going to end up the same way too.
