You've got a point. After we upgrade this secondary, we are officially on a Super Bowl run and we need no distractions.

Why might Cortez be a distraction/malcontent?

Purely out of interest - I've not really seen him say anything to the press, etc. that would paint him in that light, but might have missed it.

Just let him go, he got the physical tools but nothing between his ears. I put him in the same light as Shamarko, and Limas Sweed. Move on, cut your loses and get better players who are better head cases.

I'm in no way implying that we should hold off on filling the CB spots in the draft or free agency. However, we get to bring 90 people to camp, not just the final 53. I think there's enough there to keep him for camp and preseason IF his salary is substantially reduced. Give him the opportunity to make the roster and earn the balance of his contract. If we had to decide on our final 53 entering camp, I'd be all for dumping him. However we simply don't have to make that determination now for any reason other than cap purposes. If a pay cut addresses the cap issue, there's no reason to send him packing now.

I do hear what your saying but let's say he takes the cut we then have: Gay, Cockrell, Golson, Grant and Allen. How many CB's are going to be on the roster cause you know if he takes the cut the Steelers aren't going to release him, imo. I think if he takes the cut he becomes the guy blocking a younger guy. IDK, maybe I am looking at this wrong but I just don't want him here, he has eaten up enough of our money. I feel it is better to move on we are getting younger and there are some nice CB's in this draft I am more then happy to give them a shot.

The dude went to Citadel, I bet you in is certainly NOT a malcontent.

From what I hear, basically it is all his knee... he basically has the knee of a 60 year old... no cartilage.

Hard to argue with any of that. I think people are letting personal feelings get in the way of smart business. There is no downside to what you have laid out.

Allen should play for free. He owes us for last season.

at his rate of return it would take a lifetime to repay

not sure but looks like a total $8m dead money. save $1.7m cap this year by cutting

The timing seems odd but then again maybe they are looking for clarity heading into the final draft prep

Dead money is $4.05 Mil. $1.7 Mil is the savings this year if truly not a June 1st designation as is being reported.

Hard to say exactly, though I doubt it's pre-draft clarity personally. Maybe they made progress with negotiating a paycut, but couldn't reach an agreement. Maybe his health was the deciding factor.

optimistically maybe they are signing someone? but probably he refused the offer

need a cap-ologist to weigh in / official news but I think they designate for June 1st so all the dead money doesn't hit the cap this year

That's what I mean TTF they asked him to take a paycut, gave him time, we assume that they were working on that paycut, even if he balked why do it today? What is gained? Certainly nothing is lost but just seems well odd.

I may have to change my tune now on drafting 2 CBs. Wasn't for it, but we've lost Blake, Boykin and now Allen.

Think we have to dodraft 2 now.

Damn, our secondary is mighty thin. Two cornerbacks that have never played a snap in the NFL and maybe a draft pick or two? There are going to be some major growing pains in 2016.

Yeah it's aggravating but it's just part of the deal here lately. Man I wish we could hit on corners like we can on wideouts. If our front 7 can get it together though it will really help out the edges and that really has pretty much been the philosophy for years anyway.

This is what I'd like to know.

To be fair, based on their performances last year..I'm not too worried about bringing in a mid tier corner to shore up the secondary.

    Gay
    Cockrell
middle of the road free agent
    Senquez
    Draft Pick 1st round
    Draft Pick 4th round

It's going to be tough, but it'll be doable. Like last year and every year the season will rely on what Big Ben does.

I checked and there are no mid tier corners left.
