Nah, he got the upside, I got the downside. See there's two sides to every Schwartz.

Sign him to the vet minimum, Mike Adams can't be counted on.

Saw something about Adams still having medical issues? Anyhow this guy has upside, but he hasn't been able to stay healthy either. Never can have enough depth, but we could use it in other areas a little more depleted than O line

In terms of salary cap impact, there's a rule that allows certain qualifying vet minimum contracts to count for less than their actual value. I'm not sure of the details of that rule, but this may be one of those cases, which would be nice. Veteran depth is a good thing.

if you look at goldens stats , he's actually right about where mitchell was at that stage of his career. maybe not the long term answer but he can bridge the gap.

Well nothing against golden like him but with this small window of ben's I think we need a vet back there with Mitchell. Just my felling.

golden is going into his 5th season all with this team. mitchell now in his 3rd with us. this may be better chemistry and especially if grant can make the transition back there in year two. dangerfield and shamarko have history here too. i'm wondering if they fit in the plans somewhere as depth again?

Yes 5th season none as a starter and not a whole lot of steady playing time not sure how he can have chemistry with Mitchell, right? I am all for Golden as depth and a spot start here or there but I want more out of the safety position especially since we didn't add a #1 CB. I am not rooting against Golden but it looks like no other team thought he had starting ability since he re signed wiuth us for nothing, right? I am still trying to figure out where Grant fits on this team CB or S either way I hope he takes the next step and can add to this team with Golson. For the record I am rooting for Shark to turn things around but I won't hold my breath, what a great kid he is with a very nice story.

chemistry as far as learning this new defense together under this new DC. of course we all want more but we have what we have that has any idea of what we are doing at this point. he is our best option right now.

    cortez allen
    ross cockrell
    william gay
    isaiah frey
    garner montell
    senquez golson
    doran grant
    al-hajj shabazz
these are the corners we have right now.

    robert golden
    ray vinapal
    ross ventrone
    shamarko thomas
    mike mitchell
    jacob hagan
    robert golden
    jordan dangerfield
    doran grant

thats the safeties. i have grant in both spots because we don't know yet but they are bringing in a lot of players and will draft some too, so it's not like they aren't aware of the problem and trying to remedy it. there isn't a lot of money to just go pick up the best corner and safety out there. 5 were draft picks and two were free agent pickups. at least 7 have starting experience and more than that have game experience. i'm pretty sure we will add some draft picks to this list but even then there is no guarantee of success.

I am not to down on the group of CB's I think one of the best things is Blake being gone. However this group of safeties outside of Mitchell is said, plain and simple. Yeah right now Golden is our best option but he is not our only option. Nelson and Abdullah are both options we should check out. Guys I don't know much about are Thurmond, Moore, Rambo and Delmas are worth a look into. All while adding a guy in the draft as well. Now I understand we are cap strapped but a few moves could change all that and if we are serious about contending this could happen. :smiley1:

i thought MT said we are done bringing in DB's. maybe that was just until the draft was over. these guys have been sitting there unpicked for 3 weeks now. i'm not sure how much money we can free up either. we need around 9-10 mil for draft picks and PS players and about 3 mil as a cushion going into the season. i'm wondering now if they aren't just going to let timmons play out this year and the 15 mil. hit. maybe he retires after that, who knows. they don't seem like they are in much of a hurry to free up money to make any semi major moves right now.

Yeah I agree MT has said that and that is frustrating. I think your a little off on the numbers thou, don't the rookie class usually cost 4-5 mil? Also we don't have to worry about practice squad cause the cap is for only the top 51 players right? I think we easily free up at least 10 mil extending LT and DD and turning a little of Ben's money into a signing bonus, and that is not talking about Allen or Sushi as a June 1 cut. I too am a little worried with nothing being done with LT, I am not sure we are ready to be without him next year..jmo. I agree the closer we get to the draft the less we are gonna make a move. I am not sure that is a good thing cause I am sure we are not the only team using that approach. IDK just want more in the back end......:hehehe:

http://www.steelersdepot.com/2016/02/steelers-2016-salary-cap-update-ahead-of-new-league-year/ about 7.2 mil it says here and the PS does count. we also picked up a 6th round pick since this was posted. we have made some signings now and i think we are down to around just over a mil or two. they are still trying to sign o-linemen to backup roles at minimum deals right now, but without moves they don't have a lot of cash to play with.

Interesting, so I did some research cause I always thought it was the top 51 cause we always hear everyone talking about that and here is what I found:

Only the top 51 player salaries for a team count against the salary cap in the offseason. (Outstanding tenders apply.) During the season, all player salaries count toward the salary cap.

I think we are kinda both on the right track, no? The way I take that is we only have to worry right now about the top 51, but once the season starts we have to have everyone under, ????

So it looks like before the Johnson signing we were at 2.186 mil available space I think but I am not sure. no matter if that number is right or wrong we need more space......

correct. the top 51 until the season starts. even if they are going to be cut. i think if the june 1 designation is made prior to that for a player to be cut, we can get that money early. it could affect suisham and cortez and shamarko possibly. i read they are hoping for adams to be cleared to begin mini camp so they can do something with his contract that was tolled until this year. i'm thinking maybe we can deal suisham for a draft pick or something in a trade. if they take his salary in full we may be off the hook for that dead money.

Yeah I read some place that you could get the money early but not sure, if I remember right we did that with Woodley. I am so hoping we can find a taker for Sushi even if we get only a 7th i am fine.
