Some of these idiot franchises are raising the bar once again on what folk's perceived value will be!

I know it happens every year, but some of yesterday's signings were downright idiotic especially in a time when we have a couple studs coming due.

    Example:
Assuming Bell bounces back, what does Jacksonvilles dumb ass purchase of Ivory mean for us money wise?

I would be more worried about overpaying LB's and OL/DL personally. I think the NFL has established that rb is no longer the premier position in the league the fact that Jacksonville overpaid will just force teams to cut guys and find plug and play rb's or rb by committee elsewhere. I am just hoping that the don't drive up the price to keep Heyward or make it so DD thinks he needs to be the highest paid guard in the NFL because then those guys could be gone.

I honestly don't know if Bell is in their long term plans. Of all the skill positions its easiest to replace a RB. With our passing threat anyone you put back there is going to do decent.

Exactly... Case in point Oaklands purchase of O-smelly in regards to DD. That specific contract with others of the RB trade WR trade and DL trade might be troublesome down the road.

True... Somewhat. Bell is special, providing he rebounds. As is D Will even whilst being long in the tooth. They have an it factor.

Bell is a 2000 yard all purpose back. You dont replace that easily. He's not a dime a dozen RB.

The Steelers will want to keep him in their plans if possible.

Those players' agents are lighting up cigars with the amount they are getting paid.

I didn't mean they wouldn't want him but they have to realize he is going to be too expensive. You can't keep him, brown, and Bryant. Hell I don't know if we will be able to hang onto Brown and Bryant. Maybe they try and go Bell and Brown.

Miami is the biggest loser of all clubs. Who is running that club? Terrible deals.
Philly took them to the cleaners.

This is funny cause look at last year, the Eagles spent a ton and now dumped just about everyone. I am surprised they were able to trade them contract that usually don't happen. I don't mind the spending as much as I hate the results of when the players don't live up to the deal and then get cut. I think this is something the players union needs to look into more. Year big contracts are great but when they get cut half way thru what good do they due? jmo

Yeah, I was thinking about Philly as well. The amount spent on some players is just bizarre, given how important other things - like scheme, surrounding cast, drives and focus etc. - are to the ultimate success of a contract.

The funny thing about Philly is they were able to find takers for these players that don't usually happen........oh well, lol

Bell is not just a plug and play RB. He's a special kind of RB that comes along once in a blue moon. Steelers would be wise to pay a little more than average to hang on to him.

I love Bell and agree he is a special player, I also want to be very clear to everyone when I say this cause I don't want these comments to get thrown out of shape. I feel in this offense our RB is not as critical as the receivers, and what I mean is look how nice Dwill filled in. Are we ready to pay a ton of money for Ben, AB and Bell to go along with paying a lot for the oline already? We can't pay everyone and if Bell is gonna want to be paid top dollar he isn't gonna be here, right? I hope he follows the AB route and we have these guys together for a while but if he is looking to be paid top dollar I am thinking we can't commit to that, jmo. Thoughts??

I don't follow the yearly spending of other teams very closely, but the 89% rule is probably a driving force behind part of the big money you're seeing spent.

Is that the rule that says 89% of big money FA signings turn out badly?

I would agree with this. You don't get too many backs with the combination of skills that Bell has. But if he tries asking for the moon, I could see our management letting him go.

This is what happens when teams are mega millions under the cap like the giants and jags, they over pay for players and make it hard for teams that are barely under the cap to compete in free agency, or even to sign their roster players to new deals because their market value escalates....

So true. That's why the free agency after the draft is important when ball clubs have more of the leverage then. Because the after effect of a draft that is loaded with good defensive players means a lot of older defensive players are therefore let go.

True but some of the blame has to go to the players as well, for example take Foster I feel he could have gotten more but instead he re signed with us. Also I feel we did a pretty good job re signing some players at team friendly deals. Greedy players and teams with tons of cap space is a train wreck................

They better sign Bell before he is a FA, teams will be lining up to get him in a bidding war if he has a great season this year, the eagles blew it when they signed demarco murray to a 40 mill deal, and now he is a Titan, he never fit in with the eagles and they couldnt wait to get rid of him and his big contract, Bell on the other hand has been consistently good and being young helps his stock to be be a must have for other teams if he hits free agency....

I would say that our FO does a good job at getting team friendly deals. But the way they backloaded money on washed up guys made me pretty upset.

You would think Colbert would be pro-active in signing Bell. But when you consider his recent injury history, maybe not. Just saying that there is a yen and a yang management has to look at. It will be key to see how he comes back from this recent injury.

I think they tend to wait until camp to do extensions for players with one year remaining.

All they are going to be focusing on now is free agency and draft.

I think they will work to extend him, letting him hit FA would be bad if they want him in their future plans.

I stipulated that, IF HE HAS A GREAT SEASON THIS YEAR his value will be very high if he gets to become a FA, if he is healthy and rocking his stats by game 9 the contract should be getting finalized for him at least by game 12.....
