This is a very solid move. I think our pass defense was quite a bit better when he replaced Will Allen in the lineup. This is clearly a backup contract, but it allows us to transition a drafted safety into the lineup by having another guy next to Mitchell who has proven that he can contribute on game day. The small moves like this can really make a difference when injuries happen.

the only one of the secondary i liked last season , yes gay was not bad but if he want more i would let him go at 31 he doesn't provide any upside

Think it was yesterday. Golden was one of the guys I said I wanted to keep. Matter in fact I mentioned Grant, Golson, Gay, Cockrell too

Gay could be next. According to a "source" of Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers and William Gay have a mutual interest in getting a deal done. Hopefully we can get one done before Wednesday.

I'm thinking like 3yr/10-11mil with about 50-60% guaranteed.

That's a bargain, even for a special teams player and back up safety, and has even proven that he can start and you don't have much drop off.

Golden was given a chance early on, didn't really impress, then lost out to Will Allen. Last season, Golden showed huge leaps of improvement, and as @Steel_Elvis@Steel_Elvis says, the secondary seemed to look better when he was in there.

I'm confident that improvement will continue into the next few seasons, maybe to hold the fort while our inevitable draft pick gets settled.

Nice! Coupled with the news they will probably move on from Will Allen (liked the guy years previous, but it was time) this was a good day.

Really like this and the DHB move. Good depth guys on cheap 3yr deals. Nice to not hand out stupid money sometimes. :)

This is typical of the moves the Steelers make this time of year so they don't have to reach in the draft. I would not be surprised to see a FA CB signed. Not a big name but a fill in the blank guy if need be.

From what I'm reading, we're looking to resign Gay.

I like the move, now they need to draft one of those stud safeties. Golden could start until the rookie is ready, I guess Steeler fans can forget about Weddle coming to Pittsburgh.

Good signing by a guy who has possible upside. Like the numbers on the deal.

And this is where the train goes off the tracks; Don't want to sign just "a body" to the cornerback spot anymore. Sometimes you have to pay for something valuable. And you need talent on the edges. Not just a warm body.

But I'm still thinking they may look for someone new opposite gay until we developed a youngster. And therefore aren't forced to draft one just for the sake of drafting.

Good free agent CBs tend to be way overpriced. Should we go that way and lose cap space elsewhere. Or do we do nothing then are in a position to have to draft a CB in the 1st no matter how much of a reach. Then live with rookie mistakes and resulting losses until he hopefully learns to play?

This train off the tracks theory is what has kept the Steelers perennially competitive.

I'm not a fan of going 10 years in between super bowl victories like the Patriots did. Not happy just to be competitive. I just want more. Especially when it's within our grasp.
