Here is who I have read so far that the Steelers have met with at the combine:

    • Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose State (COM)
    • Austin Hooper, TE, Stanford (COM)

This is the 2nd time I have read Hooper as a name linked to us. I have not read much on RB's so I don't know anything about Ervin.

Well one quick look at the RB preview shows this and what a surprise:

Who's going to be the fastest running back at the combine? My money's on Tyler Ervin of San Jose State, who should be a top performer in every testing category. I'm told expect times in the low 4.3,s and Ervin may even break into the high 4.2s. His other marks are likely to be a vertical jump in excess of 40-inches and a broad jump that approaches 11-feet. This at a weight of just under 200 pounds, which will be six to seven pounds heavier than his Senior Bowl weight.

    Also:

Tyler Ervin, RB, San Jose State
    Height: 5-9. Weight: 192. Arm: 30. Hand: 9.25.
    Projected 40 Time: 4.47.
    Projected Round (2016): 6-FA.
2/6/16: The diminutive back Ervin is a return weapon on special teams who has played some cornerback as well. The senior averaged 5.4 yards per carry in 2015 for 1,601 yards with 13 touchdowns. He also had 45 catches for 334 yards with two scores. In his career, Ervin has three kickoffs returned for a score and two punt return touchdowns. He did not stand out in Mobile.

The last time the Steelers drafted one of the fastest players at the combine Dri Archer it didn't work out too well .

Agreed and I think we can find one in this draft, there are also a few CB's that can return punts and kicks. As we start the draft process I like to keep this stuff in mind, CB's like Jones and LeBlanc have added value cause of that for me. There are a lot more CB's that return kicks and punts but these two are later round guys who I feel because of the return skill might be worth a look....both these guys are examples I don't want you to think I want these guys as our answer to the CB spot. If they are there later on I would be interested for depth and/or project guys, but I want a top CB in this class.

I like Hooper and should go later than the first but don't know if he'd last to our spot in the 2nd.

morgan burns comes to mind also. k-state kick returner and cb and FS. punt returns are different though. we have been trying to find that guy that can do both but that is a lot more difficult. i'd rather we get a good punt returner and quit trying to convert good kick returners into punt returners. if not we will continue to see AB doing it.

If we need a punt returner, perhaps we should look at Cyrus Jones, Alabama. Productive starting corner for the best defense in college football, and returned 4 punts for TDs in 2015. His corner play on film is mostly good, but not great. Possibly a 3rd or 4th round guy for us. I've watched 2 of his games. I need to watch a couple more to have a more solid opinion.

Oh I'm not. Just exasperated by their insistence of using draft picks on smurfs. We had Logan who did a pretty solid job and didn't cost us anything draft pick wise. Of course they release him and draft Rainey. Which in my opinion is a luxury pick, not a pick a team that's rebuildi g should make. As we know it was a wasted pick. Then we turn around a make the same stupid mistake on Archer. Which was yet once again a wasted pick. Finish rebuilding the core then go for the luxury picks. The picks that hopefully put us over the top.

frankie williams the cb/fs/kr/pr from purdue could be had in the 7th or after at this point. i'm not sure how this kid isn't ranked higher. he is one of those guys that can return punts and kicks. he can play every one of these positions well and did but just for a bad team. i have watched more purdue games the last few years because a kid from our local HS that went to school with my boys is playing wr there. purdue had a pretty good defensive backfield the last few years. i hope our scouts are up to the task this year.

Shhhh! Don't get the word out.....I would much rather a return specialist also came from the CB/S side of the ball unless the guy is also a clear cut successor to D Will as L Bells back up.

Jones would be perfect for the Steelers they love those 5'9 CBs, if he was there in the 4th rd then go for it.

Mac, I tried to find what I could on Frankie Williams. I couldn't find any breakdown tape of him, but there was a nice 16+ minute highlight film on youtube. He looked really good on that as a defender (corner and some safety) as well as returning punts and kicks. I'm always leery of highlight reels because they only show the best of a player. I dug through the draft breakdown site looking for players who went up against him, and found a 2014 tape of Connor Cook vs. Purdue. In that game, Williams looked pretty solid. He even had an interception off of Cook on a poorly thrown out off a rollout to the right, and dropped another Cook mistake that should have been a red zone int. All that I saw him give up was a 7-8 yard out, and he made the tackle instantly on that play. He looks like a good player, but I'd want to see at least 1 or 2 more full games to make an assessment. He's listed at 5'9", 190, so he probably projects best as a slot corner in the NFL.

one thing i like about him if you noticed is his ability to get physical with WR's at the line and not give them a clean break. his 190lb. build shows he's got some strength in that 5-9 frame. good quickness in his change of direction and makeup/closing speed when a receiver makes a cut. he also covers very closely once they do get off the LOS. another thing i noticed about him with his height as you say is his ability to knock the ball away as bigger guys high point it over him but as they are bringing it down he knocks it away. text book for a shorter corner. 4 position flexibility really lifts him in my book. we are talking about a kid that may not even get a 7th round grade. his counter part brown has this position flexibility too and is in the same mold. these are the type of players that would make KC look like a genius in the 7th rd. or later.

Perhaps. I just need to watch full game tape breakdowns to have a better feel. The 2014 MSU game went a good way toward confirming the highlight reel for me, but that's the only full game I could find to watch of him. I'll keep looking. The problem is, when a team is as bad as Purdue has been the past few years, you're not going to find a lot of tape on any of their players. Also, when a team gives up points in buckets like Purdue did, it makes me wonder about what was not on the highlight reel. I'd certainly be happy to see us grab him in the 7th though. I think I've seen enough to at least confirm that level of value.

I'm glad the Steelers don't need WRs in this draft, this is a weak looking group a lot of these guys running 4.70 or slower.

Will Fuller out of ND is a good receiver, ran 4.32.

Hoping he stays out of the hands of our division rivals.
