He was released by the Rams today, the Steelers need a pass rusher. Long has 54 career sacks, also his teammate TE Jared Cook was released sign them both.

I figured someone might start a thread about Cameron Wake since he's looking to be on the chopping block too. He is 34 and is due a big salary next year. I've always liked him but I guess he's too old now.

He has been injured, I was just throwing it out there he might not fit in a 3/4 defense anyway.

Long couldnt stay on the field for the last two seasons and I dont see a lot of teams having him on their radar and he still might not be agreeable to a one year deal, he could be looking for a long term deal which leaves us out, he is a risk right now for any team to sign him imo...

I'd rather make a run at Laurenaitis.

I would be very interested in Long. This is of course assuming that his injuries the last 2 year and lack of production have driven the price down to a short term "prove it" type of contract.

He's exactly the type of player we should be looking at. A true 43 DE that would play the edge in our nickel. Jason Jones would be another good target.

Getting old, unproductive and injured. Yes, that would be a brilliant signing. Sounds like Cam Thomas.

If it were a swap for Cam Thomas that didn't drain the salary cap, I'd be all for it.

However, Long will command wages far higher than Cam Thomas.

I dunno... I can see your point, but I'm not sure there was the same extent of concern around Williams. He was one of the best received FA signings I've seen around Steelers messageboards (for what that's worth).

On a separate point, I wonder if Long would be happy to come somewhere where he would be at best a rotation option? Even at his age?

He's been injured but has talent and he's still young. This is the prime time to get him for cheap .He would be another great fa pickup by the steelers

If the Steelers could pick him up for cheap, I think he's worth the risk. I just really worry about the Steelers cap room.

Far higher than Cam now, probably yes. Far higher than the 2 year, $4 million we gave Cam 2 years a go, not so sure. He'll be 31 in a month and has been injured for much of the past 2 seasons. He also lost his job to William Hayes when he returned. I'm thinking a 1 year $3.5 million or 2 year, $6 million deal is probably his realistic ceiling right now.

I wouldn't mind kicking the tires.

No I'm pretty sure Cam Thomas was unproductive without being old OR injured. LOL!

It might be hard to get a long term deal coming off 2 injury plagued seasons. Give him a 1 year 3 million deal, throw in some incentives also. He should jump at the chance to play for a Super Bowl contender, after not sniffing the playoffs with the Rams.

Well, the Steelers love high character guys, and I can say that, living in St. Louis, Laurinaitis and Long are of the highest character. Great contributors to the community, great teammates, super hard workers. Don't know if they would fit our system, but they might be worth a look at the right price, even to rotate in to spell Timmons and to add D-line depth. I know the secondary is a much higher priority, in terms of depth and talent, but I love these 2 guys for what they bring to a team and a city. They are smart players, good tacklers, and relentless effort when on the field.
