Very interesting article on this, we have a ton of FA this year as said in this article. Now my question is going into this FA period how do we justify signing Beachum and/or Foster. The reason I am asking this is I hope we make Decastro our prime target with that said that would mean we would have DD, Pouncey and Gilbert to big contracts. I am sure there would be no room left for KB or Foster, right? With how well AV played I have a feeling KB might be gone and I can see the Steelers giving Hubbard a shot and drafting a LG. Thoughts on these guys?????

I think with the play of AV it gives the Steelers a lot more power when negotiating with Beach.

i don't think we offer anything to any of them. ramon or beach. we roll with hubbard, finney, wallace and the tackles we have in camp. 3 or 4 tackles will be back for a 2nd year. i'd maybe offer stingley a small contract to come in and compete for the backup role, but hubbard filled in there ok when needed. we may draft or bring in a guard/center type for added depth. i do believe finney will be tried at LG.

It would be great to keep Beachum due to his position felxibility but from the reports last year it seemed like Beachum isn't being offered close to what he wants.

AV played very well last year.

OL has become a strength which was overdue.

Offseason priority should be finding dirt on Munchak to blackmail him into staying OL coach for life.

The DB we sign in Free Agency will offset any major compensation for Beachum.

There's room to sign the guys we'll want to keep. The problem is that if we resign Beachum to a market value contract for a solid left tackle, we'll eat a lot of space over the next few years that can go to defense (secondary and edge rush). I for one think AV performed well down the stretch after a bit of a shaky start, and he has upside that Beachum simply doesn't have physically. I'd be OK staying with AV at left tackle. He's not as good as Beachum yet, but I think he'll be there at some point next season if he continues his trajectory.

You know, this is the year I think a bigger signing actually happens, and if it does it will be at DB. It's not traditionally the Steeler way, but the usual way of drafting and retaining hasn't worked recently for DBs. Rooney's comment about improving the pass defense has me thinking that we actually will make a bigger move in free agency to couple with building through the draft.

Yeah there is room but my question is if we sign DD to a big/long deal which I hope we do then you would have him, Pouncey and Gilbert making big money and do you want 50-60 mil of cap spent on the oline....on 4 guys? I just think that is way to much especially how bad we need secondary help.

I think we will make Steelers-esque splashes in free agency. We aren't going to sign Eric Berry and Josh Norman.... but I could see us signing a few guys like

    Isa Abdul-Quddus (S) - 3 yrs / 11 million / 4 million guaranteed
    Trumaine Johnson (CB) - 4 yrs / 24 million / 6 million guaranteed
    Morris Claiborne (CB) - 2 Yrs / 5 million / 1 million guaranteed

Perhaps. I think that the free agency targets will depend on who the front office thinks they have a reasonable chance of acquiring in the draft that may have immediate starter potential. For example, after watching at least 4 games worth of tape on Darian Thompson, I think he can play safety in the NFL at a starter level immediately (both free and strong). If there are a couple more guys like that, then CB and Edge Rusher would likely take a much clearer priority in free agency as compared to safety (though I'm not sure there's anyone who will actually be available after tagging who could help much on the edge).

If you're looking corner and safety in free agency, then I'm guessing you agree that the edge is thin in free agency, and we may need to grab an edge rusher early in the draft to get someone who can make an impact.

    Another disagreement, somethings amiss :hmm:

After years of watching poor line play, i'd welcome that scenario, all starts in the trenches, having a great line makes all the difference in the world.

You won't find a bigger Darian Thompson fan than me.

I'd like to add Jason Jones in free agency. He'd be an edge rusher out of our Nickel package only. But I think we need that MORE than the typical 34 OLB that we go after, especially when we are only lining up in a 34 a third of the time. I want a more traditional 43 DE.

Overall, I wouldn't put as much weight in draft picks removing a "NOW" need. I love Darian, he's one of my first round hopes. But Free Agency begins in March. And the draft isn't until April. So... no, I would not ignore players in free agency that address needs, while crossing my fingers that I can fill those needs in the draft.

I put some weight on the quality and depth of the draft class because we're a now team with limited cash and limited high draft picks, but I'm talking about position groupings more that individual players (you can only target A guy if you have the #1 selection). Thompson was an example because he's one of the few players that I've been able to watch a fair amount of film on. My point is that, when considering where to fill needs in free agency, I would look hard at what positions I feel comfortable being able to fill early in the draft with potential day 1 contributors, and use that as a factor.

So, as an example - If I see a great safety class, and I feel more comfortable being able to get a solid day 1 contributor at safety in the draft (that I think fits what we do schematically) than a good corner or edge rusher, I'm going to treat corner and edge rusher as more of an immediate need in free agency - simply because I don't feel as comfortable that I'll be able to address the immediate need in the draft. I certainly won't ignore good players at any position, but in this example I wouldn't get into a bidding war for a safety when I have a more pressing need elsewhere. In this case, I would also be more likely to sign a decent fill-in player at safety and try to invest in a longer term core starter at corner.

The example above is where I initially see things at safety and corner. I've watched 1 or 2 games on a handful of safety and corner prospects to get an initial feel for the position groupings in terms of guys who are generally rated by the media as top 50 prospects. So far, I really like the safety class, and really dislike the corner class. Last year I felt the opposite way. I haven't done much with edge rushers yet.

I hear what your saying, I for one am a guy who likes to keep the oline good especially with Ben getting older. But to have 4 guys making 6-8 mil a year do you think that is good for this team? I would if we didn't have options but we do AV filled in great and is way cheaper the Beachum. I think Hubbard may step in but I think a draft pick may be a surprise here. You can't pay them all you just can't, we will not have the space to sign Beachum, Foster and fix the secondary.

I'd love either or preferably both these corners to be signed by the Steelers.

If they sign DeCastro to a longterm deal, I doubt they will give another big contract to either Beachum or Foster. So there will be 3 guys on the O-line making big money not 4, or they could offer Beachum a 1 year prove it deal.

Signing Trumaine Johnson would be huge. Dude's young, proven and 6'2. No more having a 5'9 guy cover AJ Green.

I was replying to Blast a few post ago where he said there was room to sign KB and/or Foster. I responded we are going to sign DD(which makes 3) so one of the other two would make four.........

Yeah, I misread your post, thought the same thing steel6 was saying. I'd be fine with giving the LT job to AV.

Pounce, DD and Gilbert have to be kept though.

No prob Blast sometimes I get rambling on an get a little confusing, especially early in the am. I agree we have to sign DD long term he is the glue in this line imo and if they do sign him I think KB and Foster are gone unless one of them don't want to get paid.

Just gonna throw this out there what are your thoughts on exploring a trade for Pouncey? Here is my thinking, love his play but for some reason not my his own doing he seams to get injured a lot. When he goes down we always seam to do ok without him, I like Allen in this years draft too. Just some food for thought............he is a big cap hit the next few years.

It would be hard to pass on Taylor Decker if he is on the board at 25, a projected day 1 starter at LT, Munch could really coach this kid up to be a star in his rookie year, not unlike Faneca who started as a rookie, if he is at 25 it's a no brainer we draft him...

Yes we definitely need to add a little size to the outside dbs, especially considering that the WR position across the league is getting taller.

I like this guy a lot too but I will say this if he is there and we have a chance to gain picks by trading back I am for it. I think it will be interesting to see what they do if this happens cause KC, Den and Seattle will all be looking for an olineman like this and we may be able to score big.

I don't know anything about Allen but no way can you trade Pouncey without someone in place and no, Wallace isn't a good substitute for replacing Pouncey. I don't remember where I saw it but there was a breakdown of what Pouncey can do and what Wallace can't do and basically, they can't use about a 3rd of their playbook with Wallace in there. We shouldn't settle for "ok", we should strive to be great.
