oh boy BTSC said it? There have been a couple of us stating that's a possibility for months on this board. Timmons is 29 and at the top his game. We can easily extend for two more years, lowering his 2014 cap hit in the process. This is what they did with Troy and Miller. We aren't mortgaging the future or kicking the can down the road. We will have plenty of money to sign the players that are in our long term plans(TUitt etc).

    Summary:

    We have 4 choices

    1. Keep Timmons and 1 year 15 million cap Hit

    2. Cut Timmons and take 6.3 million dead cap hit saving 8.75 million in cap this year)

    3. Extend Timmons 2 additional years, in manner I suggest and have him for cap hits of something like 10/5/5 over 3 years (saving 5 million in cap this year)

    4. give Timmons a new long term 5 year deal... Same as above but with higher mid term cap hits)

#3 is ideal (and my suggested approach)

Because there is only 1 year remaining, cutting him at any time would result in 6.3 dead This year and this year only. The only time dead money is spread over 2 years is when multi years are left. If that were the case a pre June 1 cut would accelerate all cap in to the preset year, where as a post June 1 cut would place the current years bonus amortization in to the current cap, and all remaining years of amortized bonus would accelerate into the next year.

With only 1 year remaining, all of Timmons dead cap space will be taken this year

Last year the top ILB signing was Curtis Lofton 3yr/18mil I think this year may be a little more with guys like Trevathan out there. I would love to do a 3yr deal around 25 mil for LT. not sure if that would get it done but we could try.....

Bottom line for me is keeping timmons. Extend him or what ever. This defense can't afford to lose his leadership and most of all talent.
I have no doubt he is still a top 6 or 7 ilb. Not easy to replace. Dang near impossible

Ok I thought it was a standard 2 year deal. Anyways now that is even worse, you want to cut Timmions and take the 6.3 hit and replace him with Williams on a defense that was bad already???? No no no sorry I disagree with you here, we are a team that is a super bowl contender WITH Timmons not without him. LT has probably 5 years left in him let's sign him to a 3 year extension and problem solved.

I think 25 is even more than we'll need to get it done. I could see something like 21 working, but I bet we could get him for even less than this.

    21 total / 9 guaranteed / 6 signing bonus

    2016 : 3 sal (guaranteed) / 2.0 me bonus / 6.3 restructure bonus from previous deal = 11.3 cap
    2017 : 6 sal / 2.0 bonus = 8 cap
    2018 : 6 sal / 2.0 bonus = 8 cap (or 2.0 dead if cut)

Yea, I have been advocating the extension route. Cutting him outright is stupid. We agree.

Yeah because Timmons is going to extend for 2 years/8M or 2 years/11M like Heath and Troy!!! Ahahaha!

    Wow. Just wow.

That's not how the restructures work

You are poorly interpreting the leverageability of the final year and not considering it the full spectrum of the extension

See the 21 million example of Timmons above. You are labeling it a 2 year / 12 million extension, when it's really a new 3 yr / 21 million deal

How did the Steelers miss out on McCoy AND Murray last year? They better at least add Alfred Morris this year or Lamar Miller AND Reggie Bush.

I think the sweet spot may be in between #3 and #4: a 3 year extension (or new 4 year deal, however you look at it). Given his age, I think that could be the route.

While we are at talking about Timmons lets keep in mind Decastro needs to be signed as well and last year Yanda signed a 4yr 31.9 mil deal. We could hope to sign DD to a similar deal turning his 8 mil cap hit into a signing bonus saving 4-5 mil this year.

I think a Yanda type of deal would be pretty good. I think we'll see a 5 year/$40+ million deal with a bit more of a signing bonus than Yanda got.

I played around with some numbers this AM. From my number crunching, I'm satisfied that we're fine this year and don't have some sort of cap purgatory hanging over our heads in 2017, even of we give Timmons a reasonable extension. Yes, we will have some decisions to make in 2017. Every team with talent faces tough decisions on who to pay, and who to allow to test free agency. It's part of the game, and we're not going to be able to exempt ourselves from it. I did not bother to do any numbers for 2018 and beyond as so much can change between now and then. My numbers included signing a free agent corner to a contract like Chris Harris' 5 year/$42 million deal with Denver. They also included extensions for a number of free agents that we'll want to keep this year like McLendon, Gay, Foster, etc., and a 5 year/$40+ extension for DeCastro. We're in good shape for doing what we need to do to be a top SB contender for the next couple of years, and that should be the #1 focus of the front office IMO.

Timmons is the 3rd highest paid inside backer in the league according to this chart, will he give a discount or prefer to test the market, he might just decide to go the market route in my opinion thats his best option...
