Which ever team it was when 10 out of the 11 starters on defense went to the probowl the same year.

Does it have to be a Super Bowl winning team? Because the '76 team was pretty damn good.

I know this won't win many votes, because at least an honorable mention should be made to the 2008 team. Insane schedule, unbelievable results on defense, and it was done in the new NFL, the era of such offensive superiority that no one bats an eye when Chad Henne throws for 400 yards.

As a team they were worse because of the offense, but that defense was incredible.

The 1978 team was the best they went 14-2, and played in the greatest Super Bowl game IMO. They transitioned from a defense dominated team to a more offensive team.

My first thought when I read this thread title was "1978". And I've been a Steeler fan since 1974, really don't care about any other team. But I will say this - those Steeler team of the late `70s would kill any Steeler team since. They set the standard. I'm glad we've gotten Lombardi Trophies since then, but those guys are head and shoulders above anything we've had since. Just my opinion.

Any Steeler team from 74 to 80. They all were great.

I'm gonna go with the '72 team simply because they were the ones that got me hooked on the B&G!

I believe to rate the best team ever, you have to seperate the era they played in, non free agent era , versus free agent era, would the 70s teams been as good as they were with free agency, I dont think they would have won 4 super bowls with other teams going after their star players in the FA market, joe green, gone, lambert ham webster blount LC greenwood swann, and possibly even bradshaw, all gone in FA, not the same teams for sure and not 4 superbowl wins for sure....

It's a shame that Rocky and Franco got hurt before the AFC title game. That 1976 defense put the '85 Bears defense to shame. The final 8 game stretch was ridiculous and rules were changed because of it.

If the '76 team had won the Super Bowl, I'd consider it because the insane defensive performance.

However, I'm going with the '78 team. The Cowboys team that they beat were the defending champs, and had they won they might be considered a top 5 team of all time. In fact, I believe that Cowboys team WAS a top 5 all time team. They just had the misfortune of having to face the #1 all time team. Life's unfair sometimes.

I think 76. I wasn't really old enough to remember but from what I have read and even some of the players have said it was the best team just not best year cause they didn't win a championship

The 1976 team. 22 points allowed in 8 games, enough said.

I remember the sports magazines and other media at the time were saying in 1978 that the Steelers were "in a league of their own".

I had never heard that before or since about an NFL team.

The `76 team had the best defense ever, but your offense has to be on the field too to be at the best ever.

This team comes to mind for me as well, but there are a couple things working against them that prevents me from giving them the top spot. The Titans crushed us and thanks to an injury to Chris Johnson, the Ravens beat them, ensuring that we didn't have to play them again. Could we have beat the Titans? Who knows.

Our offence was pretty weak. Yes, our defence made up for it, but you need to compare the entire team to past teams.

These two things always come to mind when I try to consider this team among the best.

1976 Steelers best defense of all time. Agree if Franco and Rocky don't get hurt in the playoffs they would of been best team ever. 1978 best offensive team and best year due to winning the super bowl. No other Steeler teams in the 2000 decade come close to the 70 Steeler teams, and I don't think it's possible to duplicate due to today's free agency.

I'm not worried about the Titans. None of those teams in the 70s were undefeated, either. We played much better in the playoffs. I'm confident we'd have won.

Every steeler even says the 76 team was best. No franco or blier and I believe bradshaw was really banged up in that AFC championship game...
