Dude just from a "guitar playing" perspective Glenn Frey is not even close to Don Felder. Don Felder is very proficient in jazz and is a complete theory junkie. Glenn Frey is a WAY better "songwriter and lyricist" but from the actual perspective of playing the instrument itself Glenn Frey is not in Don's league. He's not eve in Joe's league for that matter. All the cool fusion stuff like the solo on One of These Nights is all Felder. Their music before Felder was much more simplistic but I still really love it. Felder just brought a much more sophisticated sensibility with his parts to the band. The thing with Senator Cranston was a political rally to raise money for a politician and I think Felder is more of a guy that just doesn't like when celebrities shove stuff down people's throats. It's true that he shouldn't have acted like that though. I just wonder if Frey and Henley would have liked it for Felder to take them to an NRA rally for example. I'm guessing not.

Frey was a lot better then people give him credit for. I think Vince Gill is qualified to judge his talent.

As for the the NRA comment, Im not much for strawman arguments (who was that here that liked that term? :lolol:) but if thats what Felder would want to do, let him start his own band :smiley1:

Yeah Vince is one of my favorite players. I'm not saying that Glenn sucked by any means. Just that he's not as good as Don Felder because he's not. I literally can't think of one solo that Frey played that's nearly as iconic as Victim of Love or Hotel California or One of These Nights. I'm not sure what lead guitar work Vince is actually pointing to really. It's all Don and Joe on Life in the Fast Lane as well. There's some cool dual stuff on Already Gone with Felder and Frey and that's really the one that most comes to mind for me. It's not very sophisticated but it's still cool though. Pretty Maids All in a Row was basically all Joe. Felder was also a great slide player too.

That's cool that you saw King Crimson and Yes. I suppose you are also an Alan Holdsworth fan?

Actually had to look him up - was never exposed to his music although he supposedly influenced Joe Satriani who is an outrageous axe man. I'll have to check him out, My younger brother who is an excellent guitarist (passed me up light years ago and at warp speed) turned me on to Satriani, Steve Johnson and Steve Vai. Steve Johnson has a sweet tune called "SRV" - a tribute instrumental tune to honor your boy - Stevie Ray.

I think you mean Eric Johnson. I know he has an SRV tribute since they were both from Texas and even jammed together before they both wound up making it. Did you mean Eric Johnson? Eric Johnson actually has one of the few 1954 Strats left. I don't even know if Eric Johnson is capable of making a mistake in his playing it is so perfect. LOL! Also if you like Eric Johnson you should check out Joe Bonamassa. He's basically Eric Johnson on roids. He really uses a ton of his fusion type licks.

He said it, right in the article, I Cant Tell You Why. You can say Felder was better but to say he was vastly better, I'll disagree with that.

Yes indeed it's Eric Johnson - thank you (I went to High School with a Steve Johnson). They're playing a late night concert series on PBS and one features Bonamassa - I'll have to check it out - not familiar with his work. But I agree with Eric J (and Satriani) never making a mistake - talk about owning the guitar - those dudes blow my mind. I had a CD a while back that featured Johnson, Satriani and Vai playing live at same concert - I think my brother permanently borrowed it - haven't seen it for a while. It's outstanding. I've also always liked whoever plays lead guitar for Fleetwood Mac over a 40 year span - Peter Green (original Black Magic Woman), Danny Kirwin, Bob Welch and of course Lyndsey Buckingham. As I recall, Buckingham doesn't use a pick - plays the guitar finger style but still quite well. I'm surprised his solo career really didn't go anywhere - he can play, sing and write great music but something about having Nicks and Christine McVey in FM to round him out.

Yes indeed - and followed closely by Tequila Sunrise. Watching the Steelers this year certainly required frequently "another shot of courage"! :drinks: (although Coke Zero is my go to vice these days minus the Jack)

I'm with ya! Back then, I actually did drink tequila sunrises. (Bleah!) while trying to have a "Life in the Fast Lane"
Now, my stimulant of choice is coffee!

I'd say that dvd you're talking about is probably a G3 Tour. They've been doing them for years. Malmsteen was on one too. I think Steve Morse might have been as well. It's basically a bunch of shredders touring together and then at the end of the night coming out and playing a Hendrix song together.
